Climate change is becoming an important issue in all fields of infrastructure development.Electricity plays a core role in the decarbonized energy system’s path to a regional zero-emission pattern.A well-built trans-Mediterranean backbone grid can hedge the profound evolution of regional power generation, transmission, and consumption. To date, only Turkey and the Maghreb countries(i.e.,Morocco,Algeria,and Tunisia)are connected with the Continental European Synchronous Area.Other south-and east-shore countries have insufficient interconnection infrastructures and synchronization difficulties that have proven to be major hurdles to the implementation of large-scale solar and wind projects and achievement of climate goals. This study analyzes the current trans-boundary grid interconnections and power and carbon emission portfolios in the Mediterranean region. To align with the recently launched new climate target‘Fit for 55’program and the accelerated large-scale renewables target,a holistic review of projected trans-Mediterranean grids and their market, technical, and financial obstacles of implementation was conducted. For south-and east-shore countries, major legal and regulatory barriers encompassing non-liberalized market structure, regulation gaps of taxation and transmission tariffs, and the private sector’s access rights need to be removed.Enhancement of domestic grids, substations, and harmonized grid codes and frequency, voltage, and communication technology standards among all trans-Mediterranean countries are physical prerequisites for implementing the Trans-Mediterranean Electricity Market. In addition, the mobilization of capital instruments along with private and international investments is indispensable for the realization of supranational transmission projects. As the final section of the decarbonization roadmap, the development of electric appliances, equipment, and vehicles with higher efficiency is inevitable in the decarbonized building, transportation, and industry sectors. 展开更多

In many regions, international power system interconnections provide economic,energy-security,environmental,and technical benefits. In contrast, such interconnections remain scarce in Northeast Asia.In 2016,after approving a joint memorandum of understanding between major electric power companies from China,Japan,South Korea, and Russia, related initiatives regained momentum in the region.Nevertheless, the corresponding developments in Japan remain limited, mainly owing to the lack of involvement of Japanese electric power companies. This study represents a pioneering attempt to provide an economic assessment based on power exchange prices of a power system interconnection between Japan and South Korea regarding the competitiveness of electric power companies in terms of competitive business segments and strategic consequences. We found that although the position of Japanese generators may slightly deteriorate, that of the supply segment would substantially improve, thus suggesting that more opportunities than threats are derived from the interconnection. This promising outcome may foster the adoption of an interconnection with South Korea considering the positive economic and business perspectives in Japan.Furthermore, realizing the interconnection may improve the energy security and air quality in the region. 展开更多

Electricity being a basic national infrastructure for a country, its security, reliability and quality are the most important parameters for the network managers. Several methods are generally used to improve the voltage quality more and more. However, most of the means implemented depend on external factors independent of the network managers or require huge regular financial resources. The method used in this paper is the loopback, applied to the Southern Interconnected Grid (SIG) of Cameroon, which is the largest network in the country. The procedure used takes into account nodes experiencing huge voltage drops and network constraints. The chosen loopback scenario results in a clear improvement of the voltage plan in this network, and also a discharge of the transformers, a considerable decongestion of the lines, a reduction of the power losses and a significant reduction of the thermal placement used for improvement of the voltage profile. 展开更多

The transition to sustainable energy systems is one of the defining challenges of our time, necessitating innovations in how we generate, distribute, and manage electrical power. Micro-grids, as localized energy hubs, have emerged as a promising solution to integrate renewable energy sources, ensure energy security, and improve system resilience. The Autonomous multi-factor Energy Flow Controller (AmEFC) introduced in this paper addresses this need by offering a scalable, adaptable, and resilient framework for energy management within an on-grid micro-grid context. The urgency for such a system is predicated on the increasing volatility and unpredictability in energy landscapes, including fluctuating renewable outputs and changing load demands. To tackle these challenges, the AmEFC prototype incorporates a novel hierarchical control structure that leverages Renewable Energy Sources (RES), such as photovoltaic systems, wind turbines, and hydro pumps, alongside a sophisticated Battery Management System (BMS). Its prime objective is to maintain an uninterrupted power supply to critical loads, efficiently balance energy surplus through hydraulic storage, and ensure robust interaction with the main grid. A comprehensive Simulink model is developed to validate the functionality of the AmEFC, simulating real-world conditions and dynamic interactions among the components. The model assesses the system’s reliability in consistently powering critical loads and its efficacy in managing surplus energy. The inclusion of advanced predictive algorithms enables the AmEFC to anticipate energy production and consumption trends, integrating weather forecasting and inter-controller communication to optimize energy flow within and across micro-grids. This study’s significance lies in its potential to facilitate the seamless incorporation of RES into existing power systems, thus propelling the energy sector towards a more sustainable, autonomous, and resilient future. The results underscore the potential of such a system to revolutionize energy management practices and highlight the importance of smart controller systems in the era of smart grids. 展开更多

For a large-scale high voltage direct current (HVDC)asynchronous interconnected power grid, the frequency issue atthe power sending side under DC faults is a crucial problem. To solve this problem, based on rotor motion equations, theeffect of unbalanced power on the system frequency under DCfaults is analyzed. The characteristics and dynamic developmentprocess of frequencies after the injection of disturbances areanalyzed. In addition, the actions and coordinated strategies ofvarious frequency control measures are also investigated. Basedon the testing projects of an asynchronous interconnection in theChina Southern Power Grid (CSG), the frequency features arestudied according to the measured PMU data. The outcome showsthat the frequency problem of the Yunnan Power Grid after anasynchronous interconnection can be solved and controlled. Italso shows that the frequency limit control (FLC) is importantfor the frequency regulation of large scale HVDC asynchronousinterconnected DC power grids. As demonstrated, DC FLC caneffectively suppress the deviation of the transient frequency. However, reasonable frequency regulation parameters shouldbe set and other area frequency control measures should becoordinated to maintain the frequency stability of the system. 展开更多
