Mango tilapia, Sarotherodon galilaeus is one of the most caught fish species in the Samandeni multi-species fishing sites of which, few data on its biology and exploitation are available. The study aimed to Assess the stock status of S. galilaeus. Sampling was conducted from March, 2021 to February 2022 based on commercial fish catches to analyze growth parameters, first sexual maturity size and harvest status of the stock. A total of 572 specimens including 297 females and 275 males were examined. The stock assessment was performed by using the Length based Bayesian method of Biomass (LBB) and that of growth by the ELEFAN method. The growth parameters showed a seasonality of growth and females appeared to grow faster than males. On the other hand, males had a greater asymptotic length than females. Results on the estimated length of fish at first maturity showed that females firstly reached the maturity compared to males. The relative biomass (B/B0) estimated for the stock was higher than the relative biomass that produces maximum sustainable yield (BMSY/B0) indicating healthy biomass. In addition, the length at first sexual maturity was less than the length at the first catch, indicating the absence of overfishing of growth. In addition, extending the study to the various stocks of the reservoir would be important for the sustainable management of the Samandeni high economic fishing area. 展开更多

The Samandeni reservoir in Burkina Faso, impounded in 2017, hosts a significant diversity of fish, including the Clariidae family. The fish stocks have been exploited since 2019, when the reservoir was opened to fishermen. However, no assessment of the status of these stocks has been conducted. The present study focused on the dynamics of Clarias anguillaris exploitation in order to have reliable information that can contribute to the planning of its sustainable exploitation. Length-frequency data on 323 individuals were sampled from commercial catches from March 2021 to February 2022. The growth parameters were determined using ELEFAN method and the stock assessment was done using the Bayesian Length-Based Biomass (LBB) method. The growth analysis showed isometry for both male and female fishes with allometric coefficient value of 3.03, 3.01 and 3.17 respectively for mixed sexes, male and female. Estimates values (0.6 and 0.4) of the growth oscillation intensity indicate the existence of seasonal growth. The relative biomass (B/B0) estimated for C. anguillaris was less than the relative biomass that produces the maximum sustainable yield (BMSY/B0) indicating biomass overfishing. In addition, the length at first capture was less than the optimal length at first capture indicating a growth overfishing status. Therefore, it would be desirable to increase the mesh size of the fishing gear so that juveniles are not caught, which will ensure an ecological sustainability of the exploitation of the Clariidae. 展开更多

Sixteen Limousin×Luxi crossbred beef cattle [(199.4±8.67) kg] were used to evaluate the effects of Chinese herbal mixtures (CHM) on growth, activities of post-ruminal digestive enzymes and serum antioxidant status of beef cattle. Treatments were control (no CHM supplementation) and three formulations of CHM (CHM-A, CHM-B and CHM-C) that were arranged as completely randomized design. The calves were fed in indoor individual feeding barn with total mixed ration for 90 d. The CHM-A, CHM-B, and CHM-C was incorporated into the diet at the level of 20 g kg-1 DM (dry matter) of concentrate. The cattle were weighted at the beginning, at the end and every 15 d between to determine growth rate. Blood sample was taken every 30 d to analyze activities of total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) and concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA). The cattle were slaughtered at the end of experiment and chymus samples from various section of the post-ruminal digestive tract were collected to analyze enzymes activities. All cattle had similar average daily gain, but cattle supplemented with CHM-A tended faster growth (P=0.08) compared to the control and other CHM treatments. Supplementation of CHM did not affect pH of chymus in any section of the post-ruminal digestive tract. Activities of pepsin, trypsin, chymotrypsin, and lipase in chymus samples were enhanced (P0.05) to various extents by supplementation of CHM-A, CHM-B, and CHM-C depending on the enzymes and the site of the digestive tract. Amylase activity was increased only by CHM-A and CHM-C from chymus sample collected at the ileum. Supplementation of CHM-A and CHM-B reduced (P0.05) concentration of MDA, but did not affect GSH-PX activity in the serum of cattle throughout the entire experimental period. Cattle supplemented with CHM-B also had higher (P0.05) T-SOD activity in the serum at day 30 and 60 as compared with the control and the other two CHM treatments. Chinese herbal mixtures supplemented at the levels of 20 g kg-1 DM of concentrate increased post-ruminal digestive enzymes activity and enhanced serum antioxidant status. Inclusion of CHM-A and CHM-B in the diet may be favourable for ruminant production. 展开更多

Background: This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of DL-selenomethionine (DL^SeMet) supplementation on growth performance, antioxidant status, plasma selenium (Se) concentration, and immune function of weaning pigs. 216 weaning pigs were randomly allocated to 6 treatments with 6 replicates each according to a complete randomized block design. Each replicate had six pigs. Diet of group one was corn-soybean basal diet without any additional Se supplement. Group 2 was supplemented with 0.3 mg/kg of Se from sodium selenite. Groups 3-6 were supplemented with 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 mg/kg of Se from DL-SeMet, respectively. The trial lasted for 42 days. Results: Pigs supplemented with 0.3 and 0.7 mg/kg DL-SeMet obtained better feed gain ratio (P 〈 0.05). The best antioxidant ability (serum, liver, and muscle) was shown in 0.1-0.3 mg/kg DL-SeMet groups (P〈 0.05). The plasma Se concentration increased as the dietary DL-SeMet level elevated. The immunity among groups was not affected. Conclusions: DL-SeMet supplementation in the diet significantly improved the growth performance, antioxidant ability and plasma Se content of weaning pigs. DL-SeMet can replace sodium selenite in the diet of weaning pigs. 展开更多

Although doping with growth hormone (GH) is banned, there is anecdotal evidence that it is widely abused. GH is reportedly used often in combination with anabolic steroids at high doses for several months. Development of a robust test for GH has been challenging because recombinant human 22 kDa (22K) GH used in doping is indistinguishable analytically from endogenous GH and there are wide physiological fluctuations in circulating GH concentrations. One approach to GH testing is based on measurement of different circulating GH isoforms using immunoassays that differentiate between 22K and other GH isoforms. Administration of 22K GH results in a change in its abundance relative to other endogenous pituitary GH isoforms. The differential isoform method has been implemented; however, its utility is limited because of the short window of opportunity of detection. The second approach, which will extend the window of opportunity of detection, is based on the detection of increased levels of circulating GH-responsive proteins, such as insulin-like growth factor (IGF) axis and collagen peptides. Age and gender are the major determinants of variability for IGF-I and the collagen markers; therefore, a test based on these markers must take age into account for men and women. Extensive data is now available that validates the GH- responsive marker approach and implementation is now largely dependent on establishing an assured supply of standardized assays. Future directions will include more widespread implementation of both approaches by the World Anti-Doping Agency, possible use of other platforms for measurement and an athlete's passport to establish individual reference levels for biological parameters such as GH-responsive markers. Novel approaches include gene expression and proteomic profiling. 展开更多

Objective: To develop and validate a computed tomography(CT)-based radiomics nomogram for predicting human epidermal growth factor receptor 2(HER2) status in patients with gastric cancer. Methods: This retrospective study included 134 patients with gastric cancer(HER2-negative: n=87;HER2-positive: n=47) from April 2013 to March 2018, who were then randomly divided into training(n=94) and validation(n=40) cohorts. Radiomics features were obtained from the CT images showing gastric cancer. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator(LASSO) regression analysis was utilized for building the radiomics signature. A multivariable logistic regression method was applied to develop a prediction model incorporating the radiomics signature and independent clinicopathologic risk predictors, which were then visualized as a radiomics nomogram. The predictive performance of the nomogram was assessed in the training and validation cohorts. Results: The radiomics signature was significantly associated with HER2 status in both training(P<0.001) and validation(P=0.023) cohorts. The prediction model that incorporated the radiomics signature and carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA) level demonstrated good discriminative performance for HER2 status prediction, with an area under the curve(AUC) of 0.799 [95% confidence interval(95% CI): 0.704-0.894] in the training cohort and 0.771(95% CI: 0.607-0.934) in the validation cohort. The calibration curve of the radiomics nomogram also showed good calibration. Decision curve analysis showed that the radiomics nomogram was useful. Conclusions: We built and validated a radiomics nomogram with good performance for HER2 status prediction in gastric cancer. This radiomics nomogram could serve as a non-invasive tool to predict HER2 status and guide clinical treatment. 展开更多

Chemotherapy given in a metronomic manner can be administered with less adverse effects which are common with conventional schedules such as myelotoxicity and gastrointestinal toxicity and thus may be appropriate for older patients and patients with decreased performance status. Efficacy has been observed in several settings. An opportunity to improve the efficacy of metronomic schedules without significantly increasing toxicity presents with the addition of anti-angiogenic targeted treatments. These combinations rational stems from the understanding of the importance of angiogenesis in the mechanism of action of metronomic chemotherapy which may be augmented by specific targeting of the vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) pathway by antibodies or small tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Combinations of metronomic chemotherapy schedules with VEGF pathway targeting drugs will be discussed in this paper. 展开更多

Exogenous alanyl-glutamine(Aln-Gln) was evaluated for its effects on growth performance, intestinal structure and function, antioxidant status and non-specific immunity of young carp(Cyprinus carpio L.). Six diets supplemented with 0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0, or 15.0 g · kg-1 of Aln-Gln were fed to fish for 12 weeks. Supplementation with 7.5, 10.0, or 15.0 g · kg-1 of Aln-Gln significantly increased weight gain rate(WGR), protein efficiency ratio(PER), but feed conservation rate(FCR) and survival were not affected(P〉0.05). The intestinal fold height and number, digestive enzyme, Na+, K+-ATPase activities was found to be significantly high(P〈0.05) with increasing dietary Aln-Gln supplementation up to 7.5 g · kg-1, but there were no significant differences for Aln-Gln supplementation from 7.5 to 15.0 g · kg-1. The glutathione peroxidase(GPX) activity, glutathione(GSH), superoxide dismutase(SOD) activity increased and malondialdehyde(MDA) levels decreased significantly(P〈0.05) in the intestine, hepatopancreas, plasma and muscles. The plasma complement-3(C3) and complement-4(C4) levels were significantly(P〈0.05) improved at 5.0 g · kg-1 level and decreased when over 7.5 g · kg-1. The plasma lysozyme(LSZ) activity increased significantly(P〈0.05) at 7.5, 10.0, or 15.0 g · kg-1 level. In summary, the results showed that Aln-Gln improved growth performance, development and function of the intestine, the activity of the antioxidant defense system and the plasma non-specific immunity of the carps. The optimal Aln-Gln level was 8.24 g · kg-1 diet for WGR based on broken-line regression model analysis. 展开更多

AIM To investigate human epidermal growth factor 2(HER2) overexpression and validate its prognostic effect in stage Ⅱ-Ⅲ gastric cancer.METHODS We reviewed the data of patients who were diagnosed with gastric cancer between March 2008 and October 2013 at the Yonsei University Medical Center. Among these patients, 384 patients who met the inclusion criteria were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS Thirty-two(8.3%) of the 384 stage Ⅱ-Ⅲ gastric cancer patients exhibited HER2 overexpression. The median follow-up duration was 26.0 mo. HER2-negative patients had superior recurrence-free survival(RFS) compared to HER2-positive patients(HR = 0.52, 95%CI: 0.30-0.89; P = 0.015). The median overall survival(OS) was significantly prolonged in the HER2-negative group compared with the HER2-positive group(55.0 mo vs 38.0 mo, HR = 0.43, 95%CI: 0.21-0.88, P = 0.021). OS was also prolonged in HER2-negative patients who received adjuvant chemotherapy compared to HER2-positive patients(55.0 vs 38.0mo, HR = 0.42, 95%CI: 0.18-1.00, P = 0.051). In patients who did not receive adjuvant chemotherapy, the median RFS was prolonged in the HER2-negative group compared to the HER2-positive group(not reached vs 12.0 mo, HR = 0.17, 95%CI: 0.06-0.49, P= 0.001). In a multivariate analysis, HER2 status(HR= 0.421, 95%CI: 0.206-0.861, P = 0.018) and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status(HR = 2.002, 95%CI: 1.530-2.618, P < 0.001) were independent predictors of OS.CONCLUSION Our findings showed that HER2-positive patients had inferior OS and RFS. Stage Ⅱ-Ⅲ HER2-positive patients might be potential candidates for targeted therapies involving trastuzumab. 展开更多

Background:Intestinal disorder is an important factor contributing to growth lag and high rates of morbidity and mortality of piglets with intrauterine growth retardation(IUGR).Resveratrol(RSV)and its derivative pterostilbene(PT)are natural stilbenes possessing various bioactivities, such as antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects. This study compared the protective potential of RSV and PT on the intestinal redox status and gut microbiota in weanling piglets with IUGR.Methods:Eighteen male piglets of normal body weight(NBW)and 54 same-sex IUGR piglets were chosen according to their birth and weaning weights. The NBW piglets accepted a basal diet, while the IUGR piglets were allotted to one of three groups according to their body weight at weaning and received a basal diet,an RSV-supplemented diet(300 mg/kg),or a PT-supplemented diet(300 mg/kg),respectively.Results:Compared with IUGR piglets, both RSV and PT improved the IUGR-associated decrease in jejunal villus height and increases in plasma diamine oxidase activity and D-lactate level and jejunal apoptosis of piglets(P<0.05).Administering RSV and PT also enhanced jejunal superoxide dismutase activity and the mRNA and protein expression of superoxide dismutase 2 of IUGR piglets by promoting nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2(Nrf2)nuclear translocation(P<0.05).Comparatively,PT was more effective than RSV in elevating the villus height/crypt depth ratio and occludin mRNA and protein levels in the jejunum of IUGR piglets(P<0.05).PT was also superior to RSV in increasing Nrf2 nuclear translocation and inhibiting malondialdehyde accumulation in the jejunum of IUGR piglets(P<0.05).Additionally,RSV modulated the composition of cecal microbiota of IUGR piglets,as evidenced by increasing the prevalence of the phylum Bacteroidetes and the genera Prevotella,Faecalibacterium, and Parabacteroides and inhibiting the growth of the phylum Proteobacteria and its genera Escherichia and Actinobacillus(P<0.05).Moreover,RSV significantly increased the butyrate concentration in the cecum of IUGR piglets(P<0.05).Conclusion:PT is more potent than RSV to prevent intestinal oxidative stress, while RSV has a stronger capacity to regulate gut microbiota compared to PT. 展开更多

Background: This study investigated the response of piglets receiving a yeast extract without or with a multi-enzyme mixture compared with an antimicrobial growth promoter(AGP) on performance, immune status and gut structure after an E. coli lipopolysaccharide(LPS) challenge. Thirty-six pigs were allotted to six treatments including: a non-challenged control(NCC); LPS-challenged control(CC); CC + AGP; CC + yeast extract; CC + enzymes; and CC + enzymes + yeast extract. On d 7, pigs were bled and thereafter injected with LPS or sterile saline. Blood samples were collected at 6, 48, and 96 h post-challenge. After 96 h post-challenge, pigs were euthanized to obtain duodenal, jejunal and ileal samples. Results: Overall(d 1 to 11), compared with CC pigs, AGP attenuated the LPS-induced reduction in ADG(P = 0.004),ADFI(P = 0.03) and gain/feed ratio(P = 0.01). At 6 h post-challenge, AGP pigs had lower plasma urea N(PUN; P = 0.02)and serum TNF-α concentration(P = 0.07), and higher platelet count(P = 0.04) and serum IL-10 concentration(P = 0.02) than CC pigs. At 48 h post-challenge, AGP pigs had lower PUN(P = 0.02) than CC pigs, whereas enzymes + yeast extract interacted non-additively(P = 0.001) to reduce PUN. At 96 h post-challenge, AGP pigs had lower PUN(P = 0.02)and higher duodenal(P = 0.03), jejunal(P = 0.01) and ileal(P = 0.07) villus height than CC pigs. In addition, enzymes +yeast extract interacted additively and non-additively to reduce ileal IFN-γ(P 0.10) were observed between AGP and enzymes + yeast extract pigs on other measured parameters except for the downregulation of ileal IFN-γ(P < 0.0001) and TNF-α(P = 0.003) in enzymes + yeast extract pigs at 96 h post-challenge.Conclusions: The LPS challenged piglets receiving enzymes + yeast extract showed beneficial responses in gut structure and immunity commensurate with those receiving antibiotics, though the latter had better overall growth performance. 展开更多

Growth parameters,... To evaluate the potential of barley for the phytoremediation of soils contaminated by metals, we conducted a growth chamber experiment with plants exposed to various concentrations of Zn, Cd and Cr. Growth parameters, chlorophyll content and chlorophyll fluorescence were measured at 15 and 29 days after treatment application, and the metal concentration in the aerial part of the plant, the root and the soil was also measured. In all cases, the amount of metal accumulated in the plant increased by increasing the concentration of the applied metal, and the roots accumulated more metal than did the aerial part of the plant. The amount of Cr found in the soil was significantly lower than that of Cd and Zn. The toxic effect of Zn and Cd on the plant was low, affecting growth only at the highest concentrations. For Zn and Cd at the concentrations used, the decrease in water content was 14% compared with the control and 26% for Cr. For plants treated with the highest metal concentrations, the most significant differences were found in chlorophyll content, which had the lowest values compared with the control (23% for Zn, and 42% for Cd and Cr), and in chlorophyll fluorescence (2% for Zn, 23% for Cd and 29% for Cr). These decreases occurred 29 days after applying the Zn and Cd treatments. In plants treated with Cr, the decrease occurred 15 days after treatment application. Under our experimental conditions, barley is more tolerant to Zn and Cd than to Cr. 展开更多

Nitrogen(N),phosphorus(P)and potassium(K)are important essential nutrients for plant growth and development, but their functions in energy status remains unclear. Here,we grew Nipponbare rice seedlings in a growth chamber for 20 d at 30℃/24℃day/night)under natural sunlight conditions with different nutrient regimes. The results showed that N had the strongest influence on the plant growth and development, followed by P and K.The highest nonstructural carbohydrate content, dry matter weight, net photosynthetic rate(Pn),ATP content,as well as NADH dehydrogenase, cytochrome oxidase and ATPase activities were found in the plants that received sufficient N,P and K.The lowest values of these parameters were detected in the N-deficient plants.Higher dry matter accumulation was observed in the K-deficient than in the P-deficient treatments, but there was no significant difference in the ratio of respiration rate to Pn between these two treatments, suggesting that differences in energy production efficiency may have accounted for this result. This hypothesis was confirmed by higher ATP contents and activities of NADH dehydrogenase, cytochrome oxidase and ATPase in the K-deficient plants than in the P-deficient plants. We therefore inferred different abilities in energy production efficiency among N,P and K in rice seedlings, which determined rice plant growth and development. 展开更多

BACKGROUND For lung adenocarcinoma with epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR)gene mutation, small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitors are more effective. Some patients could not obtain enough histological specimens for EGFR gene mutation detection.Specific imaging features can predict EGFR mutation status to a certain extent.AIM To assess the associations of EGFR mutations with high-resolution computerized tomography(HRCT)features in ground-glass nodular lung adenocarcinoma.METHODS This study retrospectively assessed patients with ground-glass nodular lung adenocarcinoma diagnosed between January 2011 and March 2017.EGFR gene mutations in exons 18-21 were detected. The patients were classified into mutant EGFR and wild-type groups, and general data and HRCT image characteristics were assessed.RESULTS Among 98 patients,31(31.6%)and 67(68.4%)had mutated and wild-type EGFR in exons 18-21,respectively.Gender,age,smoking history, location of lesions, morphology, edges, borders, pleural indentations, and associations of nodules with bronchus and blood vessels were comparable in both groups(all P>0.05).Patients with mutant EGFR had larger nodules than those with the wild-type(17.19±6.79 and 14.37±6.30 mm,respectively;P=0.047).Meanwhile,the vacuole/honeycomb sign was more frequent in the mutant EGFR group(P=0.011).The logistic regression prediction model included the combination of nodule size and vacuole/honeycomb sign(OR=1.120,95%CI:1.023-1.227,P=0.014)revealed a sensitivity of 83.9%,a specificity of 52.2%and an AUC of 0.698(95%CI:0.589-0.806;P=0.002).CONCLUSION Nodule size and vacuole/honeycomb features could independently predict EGFR mutation status in ground-glass nodular lung adenocarcinoma. 展开更多

Growth and nutritional status are important issues in paediatric inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).While linear growth is easy to assess, nutritional status is more complicated, with reports often compromised by the use of simple measures, such as weight and the body mass index,to assess nutritional status rather than more appropriate and sophisticated techniques to measure body composition. This review is an update on what is currently known about nutritional status as determined by body composition in paediatric IBD.Further, this review will focus on the impact of biologics on growth in paediatric IBD.Significant lean mass deficits have been reported in children with IBD compared with controls, and there is evidence these deficits persist over time.Furthermore, data imply that gender differences exist in body composition, both at diagnosis and in response to treatment. With respect to growth improvements following treatment with biologics, there are conflicting data. While some studies report enhancement of growth, others do not.The relationship between disease severity, impaired growth and the requirement for biologics needs to be considered when interpreting these data. However, key features associated with improvements in growth appear to be successful clinical response to treatment, patients in early stages of puberty, and the presence of growth failure at the onset of treatment. 展开更多

BACKGROUND The effects of T-cell immunoglobulin mucin molecule-3(Tim-3),transforming growth factor β(TGF-β),and chemokine-12(CXCL12) expression on the prognosis of patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma(DLBCL) have not been elucidated.AIM To examine the correlation between Tim-3,TGF-β and CXCL12 expression and DLBCL prognosis.METHODS Lymph node tissues of 97 patients with DLBCL and 93 normal-response hyperplastic lymph node tissues treated from January 2017 to May 2019 were selected as the DLBCL and control groups, respectively. The expression of Tim-3,TGF-β,and CXCL12 was detected immunohistochemically.Patients were followed up for 3 years, and progression-free survival was recorded.Cox mult-ifactorial analysis was performed to analyze the risk factors for poor prognosis.RESULTS The positive expression rates of Tim-3,TGF-β,and CXCL12 were higher in DLBCL tissues than in non-cancerous(control) tissues(P < 0.05).One-year postsurgery, the positive expression rates of Tim-3,TGF-β,and CXCL12 were higher in patients with effective treatment than in those with ineffective treatment(P < 0.05).The 3-year progression-free survival of 97 patients with DLBCL was 67.01%(65/97).Univariate analysis revealed that clinical stage, bone marrow infiltration,International Prognostic Index(IPI) score,Tim-3 positivity,TGF-β positivity, and CXCL12 positivity were associated with poor prognosis(P < 0.05).Multivariate Cox regression analysis demonstrated that clinical stage Ⅲ–Ⅳ,bone marrow infiltration,mediate-to-high-risk IPI scores,Tim-3 positivity,TGF-β positivity, and CXCL12 positivity were independent risk factors affecting prognosis(P < 0.05).CONCLUSION DLBCL tissues exhibit high positive expression of Tim-3,TGF-β,and CXCL12,and a high expression of all three indicates a poor prognosis. 展开更多
