Synthetic fragrances have been found to affect not only perception of attraction, but also attribution of beauty-unrelated intrinsic characteristics. The present study aimed to examine the impact of perfume-gender congruency on ratings of attractiveness and any perfume-generated halo effect. Male faces categorized as low, medium and high attractiveness were rated by 36 heterosexual female students across six domains: attractive, reliable, outgoing, intelligent, wealthy and socially competent. Ratings were made in the presence of a female perfume (incongruent condition), male perfume (congruent condition) or a no perfume control condition, with participants randomly allocated to produce three groups of equal size. The results indicated that 1) attractiveness generated a significant halo effect;2) the male perfume did not significantly enhance perception of attractiveness compared to the female perfume;and 3) the gender-congruent fragrance heightened attribution of “halo” characteristics. These results indicate that gender congruent perfume can impact positively on first impressions beyond attractiveness, and are discussed in terms of possible mechanisms and implications.展开更多
Background:The deterrence effect of automated speed camera(ASC)is still inconclusive.Moreover,it is pointed out that ASC may have varying deterrence effects on different types of road users(e.g.,taxis).Objective:This ...Background:The deterrence effect of automated speed camera(ASC)is still inconclusive.Moreover,it is pointed out that ASC may have varying deterrence effects on different types of road users(e.g.,taxis).Objective:This study intends to investigate the distance halo effect of fixed ASC(hereafter called ASC)on taxis.Method:More than 1.34 million taxis’GPS trajectory data were collected.A novel indicator,the delta speed(defined as the difference between the traveling speed and the speed limit),was proposed to continuously describe the variations in traveling speeds.The upstream and downstream critical delta speeds during each time period on weekdays and weekends were obtained by using K-means clustering method,respectively.Based on the critical delta speeds,the ranges of upstream and downstream distance halo effects of ASC during different time periods on weekdays and weekends were determined separately and compared.Results:The downstream critical delta speed is smaller than the upstream one.The upstream and downstream distance halo effects of ASC on taxis are within a range of 8-2180 m and an area of 10-580 m to the ASC location,respectively.There are no obvious difference in the ranges of upstream and downstream distance halo effects of ASC on taxis between different time periods or between weekdays and weekends.Conclusion:The present study confirms that the upstream and downstream distance halo effects of ASC on taxis have different ranges and the stabilities of time-of-day and day-of-week.Practical application:The findings of this study can provide a basic reference for reasonably deploying ASCs within a region.展开更多

By analysing two oppos...This paper makes some qualitative and quantitative analyses about halo formation rules of some mirror nuclei with the relativistic mean-field (RMF) theory and the Woods Saxon mean-field model. By analysing two opposite effects of Coulomb interaction on the proton halo formation, it finds that the energy level shift has a larger contribution than that of the Coulomb barrier when the mass number A is small, the hindrance of the Coulomb barrier becomes more obvious with the increase of the mass number A, and the overall effect of the Coulomb interaction almost disappears when A ≈ 39 as its two effects counteract with each other.展开更多

The relative ease of topomerization is dependent on the charge distribution and planarity of the ground state and the transition state of 9-membered rings as well as the size and electronegativity of halogen substituent. Consequently, the endo-2-halo-[9] annulen anion topomers become unstable and easily convert to related exo-topomers. Probing in-medium nucleon-nucleon (NN) cross section σ1/NN(α) in heavy ion collisions has been investigated by means of the isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IQMD) with the isospin- and momentum-de...Probing in-medium nucleon-nucleon (NN) cross section σ1/NN(α) in heavy ion collisions has been investigated by means of the isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IQMD) with the isospin- and momentum-dependent interaction (IMDI(T)). It is found that there are the very obvious medium effect and the sensitive isospin-dependence of nuclear stopping R on the in-medium NN cross section α1/NN(α) in the nuclear reactions induced by halo-neutron projectile and the same-mass stable projectile. However, R induced by the neutron-halo projectile is obviously lower than that induced by the corresponding stable projectile. In particular, there is a very obvious dependence of R on the medium effect of σ1/NN(α) in the whole beam energy region for the above two kinds of projectiles. Therefore, the comparison between the results of R's in the reactions induced by the neutron-halo projectile and the corresponding same-mass stable projectile is a more favourable probe for extracting the information of σ1/NN(α) because of adding a new judgement.展开更多
