The durability of OGFC, however, has been a concern since conventional OGFC mixes last typically less than ten years before major maintenance or rehabilitation is needed. This work investigates a new open-graded asphalt mixture that uses epoxy asphalt as binder to improve mix durability. One type of epoxy asphalt that has been successfully applied to dense-graded asphalt concrete for bridge deck paving was selected. A procedure of compacting the mix into slab specimens was developed and a series of laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of the new mix, including Cantabro loss, permeability, friction, shear strength, and wheel rutting tests. Results show superior overall performance of the open-graded epoxy asphalt mix compared to conventional open-graded asphalt mix. There are also preliminary indications that the OGFC mix with 4.75-mm NMAS gradation can improve the resistance performance to raveling, while the OGFC mix with 9.5-mm NMAS gradation can improve the performance of surface friction at a high slip speed.展开更多
Hard grade paving asphalts,i.e.,having a penetration at 25C lower than 25 mm/10,have experienced,in France,a significant development over the last forty years,linked to the development of high modulus asphalt concret...Hard grade paving asphalts,i.e.,having a penetration at 25C lower than 25 mm/10,have experienced,in France,a significant development over the last forty years,linked to the development of high modulus asphalt concrete for rehabilitation then for new construction of road pavements.In the first part,this paper provides a review of the evolution of asphalts in France over the past sixty years towards the use of harder penetration grades and a limitation of the evolution of the asphalt in the mixing plant to avoid early cracking of the pavement.Current recommendations in relation to climatic conditions are mentioned.Rheological characteristics of different hard asphalts produced in France are presented including data on the effect of ageing tests rolling thin film oven test(RTFOT)and pressure ageing vessel(PAV).Hardening of hard asphalt after RTFOTþPAV is comparable to that of softer asphalts.The performance related to low temperature cracking is less which limits the use of plain hard asphalt in pavements subjected to severe winter conditions and requires polymer modification.The specifications for hard grade paving asphalts based on traditional empirical tests included in the European standard developed in the mid 2000s and the choices made in France are presented.A comparison of the specifications for hard grade paving asphalts in the European standards and of those proposed for China shows that the European specifications are more stringent as regards consistency and evolution after ageing tests.展开更多
The objective of this research was to show a way to conduct rejuvenation of aged polymer modified asphalt binder(PMB) successfully.To fully evaluate and understand the rejuvenation of aged PMB,the Penetration grade ...The objective of this research was to show a way to conduct rejuvenation of aged polymer modified asphalt binder(PMB) successfully.To fully evaluate and understand the rejuvenation of aged PMB,the Penetration grade tests including penetration,soften point,ductility and elastic recovery and SuperpaveTM PG grade tests including DSR,BBR and DDT were conducted.The rejuvenation effect of aged PMB by utilizing a fluid recycling agent in common use for binder rejuvenation was evaluated.And then the compound rejuvenation effect of aged PMB by utilizing the recycling agent with a new modifying additive for binder modification was evaluated.The experimental results indicated that the recycling agent in common use currently does not apply to polymer modified asphalt binder rejuvenation.But the recycling agent together with the modifying additive can restore the characteristics of aged polymer modified binder very well.Therefore,compound rejuvenation of polymer modified asphalt binder is recommended.展开更多
