The high-cycle fatigue and fracture behaviours of the selective laser melting(SLM)AlSi10Mg alloy were investigated.Flat specimens were designed directly in the shape required for the fatigue tests under pulsating loading in tension(R=0,R is the dynamic factor). The fatigue−life(S−N)curves were modelled with a conditional Weibull’s probability density function, where the real-valued genetic algorithm(GA)and the differential ant-stigmergy algorithm(DASA)were applied to estimating the needed Weibull’s parameters. The fractography of the fatigue specimens showed that the fatigue cracks initiated around the surface defects produced by SLM and then propagated in an unstable manner. However, the presence of large SLM defects mainly influenced the crack initiation period and did not have a strong influence on the crack propagation. The obtained experimental results present a basis for further investigation of the fatigue behaviour of advanced materials and structures(e.g.cellular metamaterials)fabricated by additive manufacturing(AM).Especially,in the case of two-dimensional cellular structures, the cross-section of cellular struts is usually rectangular which corresponds to the specimen shape considered in this work. 展开更多

The fatigue fracture behavior of four ultrahigh strength steels with different melting processes and therefore different inclusion sizes were studied by using a rotating bar two-point bending fatigue machine in the high-cycle regime up to 107 cycles of loading. The fracture surfaces were observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). It was found that the size of inclusion has significant effect on the fatigue behavior. For AtSI 4340 steel in which the inclusion size is smaller than 5.5 μm, all the fatigue cracks except one did not initiated from inclusion but from specimen surface and conventional S-N curve exists. For 65Si2MnWE and Aermet 100 steels in which the average inclusion sizes are 12.2 and 14.9 μm, respectively, fatigue cracks initiated from inclusions at lower stress amplitudes and stepwise S-N curves were observed. The S-N curve displays a continuous decline and fatigue failures originated from large oxide inclusion for 60Si2CrVA steel in which the average inclusion size is 44.4 pro. In the case of internal inclusion-induced fractures at cycles beyond about 1×10^6 for 65Si2MnWE and 60Si2CrVA steels, inclusion was always found inside the fish-eye and a granular bright facet (GBF) was observed in the vicinity around the inclusion. The GBF sizes increase with increasing the number of cycles to failure Nf in the long-life regime. The values of stress intensity factor range at crack initiation site for the GBF are almost constant with Nf, and are almost equal to that for the surface inclusion and the internal inclusion at cycles lower than about 1×10^6. Neither fish-eye nor GBF was observed for Aermet 100 steel in the present study. 展开更多

High-cycle rotating bending fatigue behavior of SRR99 nickel-base single crystal alloy at 700 and 900℃ was investigated. The fatigue strengths for 107 cycles are 350 and 335MPa at 700 and 900℃, respectively. The total fatigue life becomes shorter when the temperature increases regardless of the loading stress and frequency. With the number of cycles decreasing, the difference in fatigue strength at the two temperatures becomes smaller. Typical fatigue rupture process including crack initiation site, crack propagation region and final rupture region exhibits at 700℃. The fracture surface is basically characterized by cleavage rupture at 900℃. 展开更多

High-cycle fatigue (HCF) behavior of as-forged-T5 Mg-Zn-Y-Zr wrought alloy with stress-ratio R=-1 at ambient environment was presented. The relationship between the maximum stress and the number of cycles to failure was constructed. The results show that the fatigue strength at 107 cycles of the as-forged alloy in T5 state is higher than that of the alloy in T4 state. However, in T6 state, the fatigue strength at 107 cycles is higher than those of the alloys in both T5 and T4 states. 展开更多

Lightweight design requires an accurate life prediction for structures and components under service loading histories. However, predicted life with the existing methods seems too conservative in some cases, leading to a heavy structure. Because these methods are established on the basis that load cycles would only cause fatigue damage, ignore the strengthening effect of loads. Based on Palmgren-Miner Rule (PMR), this paper introduces a new method for fatigue life prediction under service loadings by taking into account the strengthening effect of loads below the fatigue limit. In this method, the service loadings are classified into three categories: damaging load, strengthening load and none-effect load, and the process for fatigue life prediction is divided into two stages: stage I and stage II, according to the best strengthening number of cycles. During stage I, fatigue damage is calculated considering both the strengthening and damaging effect of load cycles. While during stage II, only the damaging effect is considered. To validate this method, fatigue lives of automobile half shaft and torsion beam rear axle are calculated based on the new method and traditional methods, such as PMR and Modified Miner Rule (MMR), and fatigue tests of the two components are conducted under service loading histories. The tests results show that the percentage errors of the predicted life with the new method to mean life of tests for the two components are –3.78% and –1.76% separately, much lesser than that with PMR and MMR. By considering the strengthening effect of loads below the fatigue limit, the new method can significantly improve the accuracy for fatigue life prediction. Thus lightweight design can be fully realized in the design stage. 展开更多

Rotary bending fatigue tests were carried out for smooth specimens of a mediumcarbon steel with two different grain sizes near the fatigue limit. The process of fatigue damagewas observed by replication method, and the effects of grain size, stress level and microstructure on surface damage were studied. The effect of following cycle stress level on the coaxing effects was also discussed. The fatigue limit is the maximum stress at which the short fatigue crack initiates and becomes a non-propagating crack.. The length of non-propagating crack is related to grain sizes and stress level. The coaxing effects disappear when the following stress level is greater than the critical value. 展开更多

To quickly predict the fatigue limit of 6061 aluminum alloy, two assessment methods based on the temperature evolution and the steady ratcheting strain difference under cyclic loading, respectively, were proposed. The temperature evolutions during static and cyclic loadings were both measured by infrared thermography.Fatigue tests show that the temperature evolution was closely related to the cyclic loading, and the cyclic loading range can be divided into three sections according to the regular of temperature evolution in different section. The mechanism of temperature evolution under different cyclic loadings was also analyzed due to the thermoelastic, viscous, and thermoplastic effects.Additionally, ratcheting strain under cyclic loading was also measured, and the results show that the evolution of the ratcheting strain under cyclic loading above the fatigue limit undergone three stages:the first increasing stage, the second steady state, and the final abrupt increase stage. The fatigue limit of the 6061 aluminum alloy was quickly estimated based on transition point of linear fitting of temperature increase and the steady value of ratcheting strain difference.Besides,it is feasible and quick of the two methods by the proof of the traditional S-N curve. 展开更多

In this study, the effects of portable pneumatic needle-peening (PPP) on the bending fatigue limit of a low-carbon steel SM490A welded joint containing a semi-circular slit on the weld toe were investigated. PPP was applied to the specimens with a semi-circular slit with depths of a = 0.4, 0.8, 1.2, and 1.6 mm. Then, three-point bending fatigue tests were carried out under R = 0.05. The fatigue limits of low-carbon steel welded specimens containing a semi-circular slit were increased for peened specimens compared with non-peened specimens. Peened specimens having a semicircular slit with a depth of a = 1.2 mm had high fatigue limits, almost equal to those of the non-slit peened specimens. It was concluded that a semi-circular slit with a depth of less than a = 1.2 mm can be rendered harmless by peening. Then, the fatigue improvement by peening was predicted. The fatigue limits before and after peening could be estimated accurately by using a modified Goodman diagram considering the effects of residual stress, stress concentration, and Vickers hardness. Moreover, the maximum depth of a semi-circular slit that can be rendered harmless by PPP was estimated based on fracture mechanics assuming that the semi-circular slit was equivalent to a semi-circular crack. The prediction results were almost consistent with the experimental results. 展开更多

The surface yield strength(σ_(ms))for various carbon steels was studied by means of X-ray diffraction method. The results showed that it is.far below the bulk yield strength, and is the resistance against plastic deformation in the surface layer. The smooth fatigue limit is associ- ated with crack initiation which is a result of accumulation of plastic deformation.Experimen- tal results showed the relation of smooth fatigue limit for 50% survival with σ_(ms)is σ_(ms)=0.81 tO 1.02 σ_(-1)for different steels. The smooth fatigue limit of a medium carbon steel for 99.9% survival with σ_(ms)is σ_(ms)=0.98 tO 1.10 σ_(-1).It is less expensive and time consuming to measure σ_(ms)than σ_(-1). 展开更多

A simplified procedure was described to estimate the FEL of three kinds of hot-mix asphalt concrete (HMAC) without doing any fatigue tests. The procedure required two fundamental properties of HMAC, tensile strength under different temperatures and strain rates, and flexural stiffness under different stain levels. This information can reliably be obtained in simple tests, which are the monotonic uniaxial tensile test (MUTT) and the four-point bending test (FPBT). A new parameter, the initial stress ratio Rinitial, was introduced to connect these two tests, which was defined as the ratio of applied initial stress and tensile strength of the specimen. At last the FEL can be expressed as a function of the initial flexural stiffness, frequency and temperature. Obviously, this procedure has the potential to be very useful in view of long-life pavement design and time consuming traditional fatigue tests. 展开更多

This article presents an experimental study that clarifies the relationship between the initial fracture stress and fatigue limit of glass fiber reinforced unsaturated polyester resin specimens with a laminated structure taken from a pultruded square pipe. Quasi-static bending and tension tests are performed with acoustic emission (AE) measurements to identifying the occurrence of initial fracture during testing. AE and observation results have clarified the occurrence of initial fracture was detected by maximum acoustic energy values and corresponding fiber breakage in the unidirectional (UD) bundles. Moreover, the ratio of initial fracture stress to ultimate strength is 32% in bending and 26% in tension, when comparing stress and strains on the tension side of the UD layer. These values are in good agreement with each other and with the measured tensile fatigue limit when the cyclic stress is at 25% of the tensile strength. Initial fracture stress obtained by static tests is close values to the fatigue limit which will greatly contribute to the prediction of the fatigue limit. 展开更多

The surface temperature of extruded AZ31B alloy plate was measured by infrared thermograph in air during tension and high-cycle fatigue tests. The mechanism of heat production was discussed and the value of critical fatigue damage temperature was calculated according to the P—ΔT curve. Results show that the variation trend of temperature is different between tension and fatigue tests. The temperature evolution in tension test consists of four stages: linear decrease, reverse linear increase, abrupt increase, and final drop. The initial decrease of temperature is caused by thermal elastic effect, which is corresponding to the elastic deformation in tension progress. When cyclic loading is above the fatigue limit, the temperature evolution mainly undergoes five stages: initial increase, steep reduction, steady state, abrupt increase, and final drop. The peak temperature in fatigue test is caused by strain hardening that can be used to evaluate the fatigue life of magnesium alloy. The critical temperature variation that causes the fatigue failure is 3.63 K. When ΔT≤3.63 K, the material is safe under cyclic loading. When ΔT3.63 K, the fatigue life is determined by cycle index and peak temperature. 展开更多

The corrosion fatigue behavior of epoxy-coated Mg-3Al-1Zn alloy in gear oil was investigated. The corrosion and the fracture surfaces after fatigue test were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and the corrosion compositions were measured by energy-dispersive spectrometry(EDS). The fatigue properties and the crack initiation mechanisms of the specimens before and after epoxy coating treatment were discussed. The results indicate that the fatigue limit after epoxy coating treatment in gear oil is higher than that of the uncoated specimens. The epoxy coating is an excellent way to prevent direct contact between the Mg-3Al-1Zn alloy and surrounding environments. The mechanical properties of the epoxy coating layer are lower than that of magnesium alloy, which is the main reason for the fatigue crack initiation on the epoxy coating layer. In addition, the gear oil lubrication could lead to the flaking off of the epoxy-coated layer. 展开更多

Failures due to high-cycle fatigue have led to a high cost in aerospace engineering over the past few decades. In this paper, the experimental results of the fatigue behavior of compressor blade specimen subjected to resonance and the effects of a damping hard coating on relieving the fatigue progress are presented. The crack initiation and propagation processes were observed under resonance of the first bending mode by using the resonant frequencies as the indicator.Significant nonlinear features were observed in the spectrum of the blade with a fatigue crack. The finite element model considering the breathing crack was established with nonlinear contact based on the crack localization and size, which was obtained by ultrasonic phased array technology. The simulation results of the vibration behavior of the cracked blade were obtained and consistent with the experimental results.A NiCrAlY coating was deposited on the blade, and increases in the fatigue life were observed under the same condition. The results of this paper can help to better understand the fatigue of a compressor blade subjected to resonance and provide a preference for the application of a damping hard coating on compressor blades. 展开更多

In this paper, ultrasonic (20 kHz) fatigue tests were performed on specimens of a high-strength steel in very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) regime. Experimental results showed that for most tested specimens failed in a VHCF regime, a fatigue crack originated from the interior of specimen with a fish-eye pattern, which contained a fine granular area (FGA) centered by an inclusion as the crack origin. Then, a two-parameter model is proposed to predict the fatigue life of high-strength steels with fish-eye mode failure in a VHCF regime, which takes into account the inclusion size and the FGA size. The model was verified by the data of present experiments and those in the literature. Furthermore, an analytic formula was obtained for estimating the equivalent crack growth rate within the FGA. The results also indicated that the stress intensity factor range at the front of the FGA varies within a small range, which is irrespective of stress amplitude and fatigue life. 展开更多

The effect of addition of different concentrations of Ce on high-cycle fatigue behavior of die-cast magnesium alloy AZ91D was investigated. Mechanical fatigue tests were conducted at the stress ratio of R = 0.1, and fatigue strength was evaluated using up-and-down loading method. The results show that the grain size of AZ91D alloy is remarkably refined, and the amount of porosity decreases and evenly distributes with the addition of Ce. The fatigue strength of AZ91D alloy at room temperature increases from 96.7 up to 116.3 MPa ( 1% Ce) and 105.5 MPa (2 % Ce), respectively, at the number of cycles to failure, Nf = 1 × 10^7. Fatigue properties of high-strength steels become more and more sensitive to inclusions with enhancing the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) because the inclusions often cause a relatively low fatigue strength and a large scatter of fatigue lives. In this work, four S–N curves and more than 200 fatigue fracture morphologies were comprehensively investigated with a special focus on the size and type of inclusions at the fatigue cracking origin in GCr15 steel with a wide strength range by different heat treatments after high-cycle fatigue (HCF). It is found that the percentage of fatigue failure induced by the inclusion including Al2 O3 and TiN gradually increases with increasing the UTS, while the percentage of failure at sample surfaces decreases conversely and the fatigue strength first increases and then decreases. Besides, it is interestingly noted that the inclusion sizes at the cracking origin for TiN are smaller than that for Al2 O3 because the stress concentration factor for TiN is larger than that for Al2 O3 based on the finite element simulation. For the first time, a new fatigue cracking criterion including the isometric inclusion size line in the strength-toughness coordinate system with specific physical meaning was established to reveal the relationship among the UTS, fracture toughness, and the critical inclusion size considering different types of inclusions based on the fracture mechanics. And the critical inclusion size of Al2 O3 is about 1.33 times of TiN. The fatigue cracking criterion could be used to judge whether fatigue fracture occurred at inclusions or not and provides a theoretical basis for controlling the scale of different inclusion types for high-strength steels. Our work may offer a new perspective on the critical inclusion size in terms of the inclusion types, which is of scientific interest and has great merit to industrial metallurgical control for anti-fatigue design. 展开更多
