A new higher-order shear deformation theory based on global-local superposition technique is developed. The theory satisfies the free surface conditions and the geometric and stress continuity conditions at interfaces. The global displacement components are of the Reddy theory and local components are of the internal first to third-order terms in each layer. A two-node beam element based on this theory is proposed. The solutions are compared with 3D-elasticity solutions. Numerical results show that present beam element has higher computational efficiency and higher accuracy. 展开更多

An approximate analysis for free vibration of a laminated curved panel(shell)with four edges simply supported(SS2),is presented in this paper. The transverse shear deformation is considered by using a higher-order shear deformation theory. For solving the highly coupled partial differential governing equations and associated boundary conditions,a set of solution functions in the form of double trigonometric Fourier series, which are required to satisfy the geometry part of the considered boundary conditions,is assumed in advance.By applying the Galerkin procedure both to the governing equations and to the natural boundary conditions not satisfied by the assumed solution functions,an approximate solution, capable of providing a reliable prediction for the global response of the panel,is obtained.Numerical results of antisymmetric angle-ply as well as symmetric cross-ply and angle-ply laminated curved panels are presented and discussed. 展开更多

The main objective of this study is to investigate the buckling analysis of CCSs reinforced by CNTs subjected to combined loading of hydrostatic pressure and axial compression resting on the twoparameter elastic foundation(T-P-EF).It is one of the first attempts to derive the governing equations of the CCSs reinforced with CNTs,based on a generalized first-order shear deformation shell theory(FSDST)which includes shell-foundation interaction.By adopting the extended mixing rule, the effective material properties of CCSs reinforced by CNTs with linear distributions are approximated by introducing some efficiency parameters.Three carbon nanotube distribution in the matrix,i.e.uniform distribution(U)and V and X-types linear distribution are taken into account. The stability equations are solved by using the Galerkin procedure to determine the combined buckling loads(CBLs)of the structure selected here. The numerical illustrations cover CBLs characteristics of CCSs reinforced by CNTs in the presence of the T-P-EF.Finally,a parametric study is carried out to study the influences of the foundation parameters, the volume fraction of carbon nanotubes and the types of reinforcement on the CBLs. 展开更多

The paper presents an approach for the formulation of general laminated shells based on a third order shear deformation theory. These shells undergo finite (unlimited in size) rotations and large overall motions but with small strains. A singularity-free parametrization of the rotation field is adopted. The constitutive equations, derived with respect to laminate curvilinear coordinates, are applicable to shell elements with an arbitrary number of orthotropic layers and where the material principal axes can vary from layer to layer. A careful consideration of the consistent linearization procedure pertinent to the proposed parametrization of finite rotations leads to symmetric tangent stiffness matrices. The matrix formulation adopted here makes it possible to implement the present formulation within the framework of the finite element method as a straightforward task. 展开更多

Recently application of functionally graded materials(FGMs) have attracted a great deal of interest. These materials are composed of various materials with different micro-structures which can vary spatially in FGMs. Such composites with varying thickness and non-uniform pressure can be used in the aerospace engineering. Therefore, analysis of such composite is of high importance in engineering problems. Thermoelastic analysis of functionally graded cylinder with variable thickness under non-uniform pressure is considered. First order shear deformation theory and total potential energy approach is applied to obtain the governing equations of non-homogeneous cylinder. Considering the inner and outer solutions, perturbation series are applied to solve the governing equations. Outer solution for out of boundaries and more sensitive variable in inner solution at the boundaries are considered. Combining of inner and outer solution for near and far points from boundaries leads to high accurate displacement field distribution. The main aim of this paper is to show the capability of matched asymptotic solution for different non-homogeneous cylinders with different shapes and different non-uniform pressures. The results can be used to design the optimum thickness of the cylinder and also some properties such as high temperature residence by applying non-homogeneous material. 展开更多

Similar to the very vast prior literature on analyzing laminated composite structures,“higher-order”and“layer-wise higher-order”plate and shell theories for functionally-graded(FG)materials and structures are also widely popularized in the literature of the past two decades. However, such higher-order theories involve(1)postulating very complex assumptions for plate/shell kinematics in the thickness direction,(2)defining generalized variables of displacements, strains, and stresses,and(3)developing very complex governing equilibrium, compatibility, and constitutive equations in terms of newly-defined generalized kinematic and generalized kinetic variables.Their industrial applications are thus hindered by their inherent complexity, and the fact that it is difficult for end-users(front-line structural engineers)to completely understand all the newly-defined generalized DOFs for FEM in the higher-order and layer-wise theories. In an entirely different way, very simple 20-node and 27-node 3-D continuum solid-shell elements are developed in this paper, based on the simple theory of 3D solid mechanics, for static and dynamic analyses of functionally-graded plates and shells.A simple Over-Integration(a 4-point Gauss integration in the thickness direction)is used to evaluate the stiffness matrices of each element, while only a single element is used in the thickness direction without increasing the number of degrees of freedom.A stress-recovery approach is used to compute the distribution of transverse stresses by considering the equations of 3D elasticity in Cartesian as well as cylindrical polar coordinates.Comprehensive numerical results are presented for static and dynamic analyses of FG plates and shells, which agree well, either with the existing solutions in the published literature,or with the computationally very expensive solutions obtained by using simple 3D isoparametric elements(with standard Gauss Quadrature)available in NASTRAN(wherein many 3D elements are used in the thickness direction to capture the varying material properties). The effects of the material gradient index, the span-to-thickness ratio, the aspect ratio and the boundary conditions are also studied in the solutions of FG structures.Because the proposed methodology merely involves:(2)standard displacement DOFs at each node,(2)involves a simple 4-point Gaussian over-integration in the thickness direction,(3)relies only on the simple theory of solid mechanics,and(4)is capable of accurately and efficiently predicting the static and dynamical behavior of FG structures in a very simple and cost-effective manner,it is thus believed by the authors that the painstaking and cumbersome development of“higher-order”or“layer-wise higher-order”theories is not entirely necessary for the analyses of FG plates and shells. 展开更多

Since the multi-layered structures are widely used nowadays, and due to interesting applications of cylindrical shells, this study is dedicated to analyzing free vibrational behaviors of functionally graded saturated porous micro cylindrical shells with two nanocomposite skins. Based on Biot's assumptions, constitutive relations for the core are presented and effective properties of the skins are determined via the rule of mixture. A sinusoidal theory is used to capture the shear deformation effects, and to account for the scale effects, the modified couple stress theory is employed which suggests a material length-scale parameter for predicting the results in small-dimension. With the aid of extended form of Hamilton's principle for dynamic systems, differential equations of motion are extracted. Fourier series functions are used to obtain natural frequencies and after validating them, a set of parametric studies are carried out. The results show the significant effects of porosity and Skempton coefficient, pores placement patterns, CNTs addition and distribution patterns, temperature variations, material length-scale parameter and viscoelastic medium on the natural frequencies of the microstructure. The outcomes of this work could be used to design and manufacture more reliable micro cylindrical structures in thermo-dynamical environments. 展开更多

This paper develops electro-elastic relations of functionally graded cylindrical nanoshell integrated with intelligent layers subjected to multi-physics loads resting on elastic foundation. The piezoelectric layers are actuated with external applied voltage. The nanocore is assumed in-homogeneous in which the material properties are changed continuously and gradually along radial direction.Third-order shear deformation theory is used for the description of kinematic relations and electric potential distribution is assumed as combination of a linear function along thickness direction to show applied voltage and a longitudinal distribution.Electro-elastic size-dependent constitutive relations are developed based on nonlocal elasticity theory and generalized Hooke’s law.The principle of virtual work is used to derive governing equations in terms of four functions along the axial and the radial directions and longitudinal electric potential function. The numerical results including radial and longitudinal displacements are presented in terms of basic input parameters of the integrated cylindrical nanoshell such as initial electric potential, small scale parameter, length to radius ratio and two parameters of foundation. It is concluded that both displacements are increased with an increase in small-scale parameter and a decrease in applied electric potential. 展开更多

A new displacement based higher order element has been formulated that is ideally suitable for shear deformable composite and sandwich plates. Suitable functions for displacements and rotations for each node have been selected so that the element shows rapid convergence, an excellent response against transverse shear loading and requires no shear correction factors. It is completely lock-free and behaves extremely well for thin to thick plates. To make the element rapidly convergent and to capture warping effects for composites, higher order displacement terms in the displacement kinematics have been considered for each node. The element has eleven degrees of freedom per node. Shear deformation has also been considered in the formulation by taking into account shear strains ( rxz and ryz) as nodal unknowns. The element is very simple to formulate and could be coded up in research software. A small Fortran code has been developed to implement the element and various examples of isotropic and composite plates have been analyzed to show the effectiveness of the element. 展开更多

A postbuckling analysis is presented for a shear deformable laminated cylindrical panel of finite length subjected to lateral pressure. The governing equations are based on Reddy's higher order shear deformation shell theory with von Krmn_Donnell_type of kinematic nonlinearity. The nonlinear prebuckling deformations and initial geometric imperfections of the panel are both taken into account. A boundary layer theory of shell buckling, which includes the effects of nonlinear prebuckling deformations, large deflections in the postbuckling range, and initial geometric imperfections of the shell, is extended to the case of shear deformable laminated cylindrical panels under lateral pressure. A singular perturbation technique is employed to determine the buckling loads and postbuckling equilibrium paths. The numerical illustrations concern the postbuckling response of perfect and imperfect, moderately thick, cross_ply laminated cylindrical panels. The effects played by transverse shear deformation, panel geometric parameters, total number of plies, fiber orientation, and initial geometric imperfections are studied. 展开更多
