Mating Strategies in the Context of Culture and Evolutionary Psychology

This paper comparatively studies the research outcome of the mating strategies by evolutionary psychologists and concludes that the mating preference is related to the two original natures of human beings—libido and appetite,and it is the mental mechanism of the coordination of the two.Preferences related to existence come from the appetite mechanism;while preferences related to reproduction come from the libido mechanism.The appetite mechanism and the libido mechanism are independent as well as unified,and they can meet the physiological need,the reproduction need of human beings and realize the survival value and psychological value,the essence of which is to pursue the happiness of human nature.

Discussion on Dong Ethnic Minority＇s Folk Culture and Aesthetic Psychology from the Perspective of Song and Dance ＂Duoye＂

In this paper, Dong ethnic minority＇s folk customs and aesthetic psychology are understood from the perspective of the nationality culture reflected in Dong song and dance ＂Duoye＂ so as to excavate the nationality spirit, and also the connotation and spiritual foundation of the humanity structure are explored, in which the dignified history, rich nationality characteristics, and elegant artistic quality are integrated together, for the purpose of inheriting the traditional culture and continuously innovating and developing the nationality culture.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY IN A CROSS-CULTURE PERSPECTIVE——An interview with Dr. Paul E. Spector

Occupational Health Psychology(OHP)is an interdisciplinary field concerned with psychological factors in employee's health,safety,and well-being,closely related to Industrial/Organizational(I/O)Psychology. Specific areas of concern are accidents,injuries,illness,stress,violence,counterproductive work behavior,and work-family conflict. Based on his research,Dr. Paul E. Spector answered our questions on aspects of Occupational Health Psychology,Cross-cultural Psychology and research/statistical methods in I/O Psychology. His opinions or suggestions about future research in I/O Psychology are informative and inspiring.

The Status of the “Biopsychosocial” Model in Health Psychology: Towards an Integrated Approach and a Critique of Cultural Conceptions

The current status of the “Biopsychosocial” Model in health psychology is contested and arguably exists in a stage of infancy. Despite original goals, medical researchers have developed theoretical and empirical integrations across bio-psycho-social domains only to a limited extent. This review article addresses this issue by making connections across research findings in health psychology and related medical fields in order to strengthen the associations across bio-psycho-social domains. In particular, research in sociosomatics, neuroplasticity and psychosocial genomics are introduced and explored. The role of “culture” as conceived of within the Biopsychosocial Model is also ambiguous and somewhat problematic. Arthur Klienman’s conceptions of culture as what is at stake for individuals in their local social and moral worlds is adopted to offer a critique of previous perspectives of culture and question its role amidst bio-psycho-social domains. Overall, a multilevel integrative or ‘holistic’ perspective is advanced to strengthen the Biopsychosocial Model for use within health psychology and biomedical research. In the end, some clinical implications are discussed.

Cultural Psychology： An Interdisciplinary Perspective

Cultural Psychology emerged as an interdisciplinary subfield roughly in the 1980s/1990s. With about thirty years of momentum, this discipline has grown from little more than a special interests group to a topic to which multiple institutions and journals have been dedicated. This paper presents an outline of the discipline of Cultural Psychology from an American interdisciplinary perspective. The pitfalls of General Psychology （research methodology, politicization, and an essentialist hermeneutic） and Anthropology （an epistemological gap in the four fields approach, psychophobia, and the role of the researcher in cultural change） are addressed, in turn. Cultural Psychology provides an alternative to these pitfalls by drawing on the strengths of each discipline to address both theoretical and empirical problems. Cultural Psychology urges for a critical reflection on the social structure and history of its own discipline, resulting in a broader academic canon and a more nuanced understanding of interdisciplinary relations within the human sciences.

Culture Shock:an Inevitable Experience

Culture shock is a problem that most overseas students may experience,hence the importance of analysis on culture shock and its influences.This paper firstly draws on the reasons why culture difference exists and the situation it brings about.The result shows that culture shock is inevitable to anyone who lives abroad,and the variability in the length of culture shock time.Therefore the only method abroad people can deal with culture shock is to release the caused effect,and communicate more until the effect recedes.At the end of this essay,it offers advice on how to get over culture shock period and obtain a better acculturation when studying abroad.

Cultured meat in western media: The disproportionate coverage of vegetarian reactions, demographic realities, and implications for cultured meat marketing

This paper examines the media coverage of the 2013 London cultured meat tasting event, particularly in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Using major news outlets, prominent magazines covering food and science issues, and advocacy websites concerning meat consumption, the paper characterizes the overall emphases of the coverage, the tenor of the coverage, and compares the media portrayal of the important issues to the demographic and psychological realities of the actual consumer market into which cultured meat will compete. In particular, the paper argues that Western media gives a distorted picture of what obstacles are in the path of cultured meat acceptance, especially by overemphasizing and overrepresenting the importance of the reception of cultured meat among vegetarians. Promoters of cultured meat should recognize the skewed impression that this media coverage provides and pay attention to the demographic data that suggests strict vegetarians are a demographically negligible group. Resources for promoting cultured meat should focus on the empirical demographics of the consumer market and the empirical psychology of mainstream consumers.

Paradigm Shifts in Translation Studies： Focus on Linguistic, Cultural, Social and Psychological Turns

Translation has been the subject of a variety of research and conflicts among theorists. This fact that gives Thomas Samuel Kuhn＇s paradigm theory is pertinent to the present study. Kuhn is an American philosopher of Science. In his book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, he proposes his paradigm theory which plays a great role in the development of sociology and philosophy of Science. According to Kuhn （1970）, paradigm originates from one or some famous people＇s achievements, and for these achievements to be considered as paradigms, two major characteristics must be met as will be clarified in this paper. This study is an attempt to outline the scope of the disciplines of Translation Studies （TS）, to give some indication of the kind of work that has been done so far. It is an attempt to demonstrate that TS is a discipline in its own right. It is a vastly complex field with many far-reaching ramifications. This study discusses the relationships between the changing definitions of translation and the turns of translation studies.

This study investigates the influence of psychological schema and communication behaviors in communication. Just as different disciplines and theorists use different concepts for different purposes, individuals may have different mental patterns of communication depending on their experience. The effects of different psychological behaviors can differ dramatically. The process of culture acquisition and communication is extremely a complex psychological process. Psychological schema determines how communicators analyze other people＇s information and respond with their own judgment about the speakers＇ cultural perspectives. Ethics and compliance programs have a direct linkage to key tenets of employee behaviors.The employee behaviors are building blocks of the organizations’psychological environment traits.They are characterized by role identity,self-awareness,motivation,and misconduct.It is crucial to unravel the diversity of the perspectives of the programs to design an appropriate framework of the relationship between ethics and compliance and organizational psychology.According to Weinstein(2019),“Compliance is a fundamental pillar of any corporate operation and culture,and it should be based upon the principles of transparency,impartiality,responsibility,integrity,professionalism and ethics”.While“Ethics goes beyond what the law requires.It involves doing the right thing and following both the spirit and not just the letter of the law”.The founding facets of effective ethics and compliance are culture,leaders,and risks management.Policies and procedures that integrate these factors reduce the risks of non-compliance.The organization psychological environment aligns with key characteristics of the workplace such as physical setting,culture,and job characteristics.Aspects such as noise,heat,and lighting measures may considerably impact concentration,thus affecting psychological well-being.According to Ruiz-Palomino,Martínez-Cañas,and Fontrodona(2013,p.173),ethical culture directly impacts an individual’s emotional and well-being,which characterizes organizational psychology.Culture and ethics influence perceived corporate support and social exchange,which trigger ethics and compliance.

Psychological and Philosophical Readings of the Spectatorship of Bollywood and Indian Tamil Film in Sri Lanka

The objective of this study is to explore the psychic, moral, ethical and logical significances in the spectatorship of Bollywood and Tamil film in the Sri Lanka. Bollywood and Tamil film has been taking a very popular cultural performance in Sri Lanka. The original Indian spectatorship of these film traditions has been diverted by the cultural and political psychology of Sri Lanka. Hence, this local orientation of the Indian cinema remains a quite metamorphosis and deconstruction in its appreciation and screening in terms of the social, cultural and political features that deeply-rooted in Sri Lankan history, culture and geographical limitations. For this study, several film texts, which include typical Bollywood and Tamil film characteristic features were used and observed on how they have been absorbed in the Sri Lankan cultural society. And on the other hand, some audience surveys specific to different film appreciation contexts were conducted. They included urban slums, semi-rural Muslim societies, north and east areas of Tamil villages, Colombo urban society, Tamil state areas and Kandyan Sinhala rural villages. In the textual analysis of the film content, implicit psychological narrations and their social and aesthetic interpretations were revealed in the analytical explanations. Using the audience surveys, many different opinions that can be traditionally filtered in the screening and appreciation of these film traditions specific to their living cultural settings were also identified. In conclusion, perception in Sinhala film has been considerably designed by the experience of Bollywood and Tamil film spectatorship is deducted by this study. Hence, not only this social trend affected to the appreciation of film in local general audience but also in all the facets of film production （script writing, shooting, acting, dialoguing, music and choreography and screening） has also significantly being influenced by the Bollywood and Tamil film. As a result of this evolution of local film culture, most recent trend in Sinhala film noir is also being followed by the early subjective consequences of Bollywood and Tamil film culture in Sri Lanka.

On the Role of Confucian Ethical Thoughts in the Formation of Psychological Personality

As the mainstream ideology in the traditional Chinese social structure,Confucian ethical thoughts have existed for a long time and influenced the social ethical structure and the formation of cultural psychology and personality of Chinese people significantly.Taking the internal relation of the role of Confucian ethical thoughts in the formation of personality as a point of penetration,this paper discusses the internal relation between the shaping of social consciousness by Confucian ethical thoughts and the formation of personality as well as its influence mode,revealing the construction process of psychological personality by Confucian culture.On this basis,we explore the advantages of Confucian social ethics by making full use of its positive factors and promote the improvement of individual's personality with social psychology.

The phenomenon of the ＂variants of the same tune＂ of the Shanxi folk songs and its cultural interpretation

The ＂variants of the same tune＂ is the unique musical phenomenon produced in the process of the communication of the Chinese folk songs. A piece of the folk song, in the process of spreading to the different regions, will be constantly changing and creating a number of the variants of the folk songs, and these songs ＂with changes in the similarities＂ together constitute the songs of the ＂variants of the same tune＂. However, what musical elements are ＂the same＂ in the songs of the ＂variants of the same tune＂？ What musical elements have been changed？ What are the reasons for the ＂similarities＂ and the ＂changes＂？ These are the questions worth considering. To answer these questions, it is necessary to deeply explore the aesthetic and cultural psychologies of the folk groups in the areas of the spread of the folk songs. Therefore, this paper will select the typical folk songs of the ＂variants of the same tune＂ of＂For friends＂, ＂Hitting the wild jujube＂, and ＂Pouch Embroidering＂ in the Shanxi area as an example to carry out the analysis of the music and art and sort out the evolutionary tracks, and point out the feasibility to reveal the regional people＇s aesthetic and cultural psychologies with the help of the research on the folk songs of the ＂variants of the same tune＂ and the potential significance in the promotion of the creation of the current national folk music.

Traditional Chinese Cultural Basis of“Retrospective Positive Acceptance and Striving”

It has practical significance in carrying forward the heritage of the traditional Chinese culture and developing a harmonious socity.

华人本土心理学与中国心理学自主知识体系建构——杨中芳教授专访

发端于中国台湾的华人本土心理学,旨在跳出西方心理学理论、方法及知识体系,“将华人当华人来研究”,最终建构基于中国文化/社会/历史背景的,贴合中国人的心理学知识体系。自20世纪80年代以来,亲历过美国社会心理学文化反思的杨中芳教授长期游走于海峡两岸和香港,在大陆心理学及社会心理学重建之初,即将华人本土心理学介绍给大陆心理学界,并通过培训人才和组建中山大学心理学系,对大陆心理学的发展产生了重要的推动作用。然而,40多年来,大陆的心理学仍然不可避免地经历了以学习西方为主的发展与繁荣,本土心理学的声势却相对微弱。直到最近,我国社会科学界兴起中国自主知识体系建构的大潮,围绕心理学及社会科学本土化的争论高潮迭起。杨中芳教授以其持续40多年的华人本土心理学探索经验,以及围绕中庸心理学所建构的中国文化视角下的心理学知识体系,对当下如何建构中国心理学自主知识体系提供了典范和宝贵的经验借鉴。
