This paper defines the notion of discourse ideology in the practice of translation, highlights the relationship between discourse ideology and the translator's subjectivity, and illustrates the translation strategies appropriate to the context of publicity of Chinese minority culture to the readers outside China. A tentative conclusion is drawn that the top-down approach from discourse ideology to translation strategies and the bottom-up approach from translation strategies to discourse ideology complement with each other in the Chinese-to-English translation of publicity on Chinese minority culture.展开更多

Peter Hajdu's major ideas include: 1) the selection of a foreign piece of literature mostly depends on the target culture's demands, of which the reception of Petbfi Soindor's "Liberty and Love" is a good example; 2) it is usual that smaller literary communities translate from another smaller community's literature what already had a success in a major market. Peripheries do not communicate directly, but via a center, and this practice also reinforces the privileged position of the center; 3) the hermeneutic circle may help us understand domestication and foreignization in translation. We understand something strange though the familiar and complete strangeness cannot be understood. Therefore it is theoretically possible that making something more familiar helps one understand its otherness; 4) Readers of translatedcontemporary Chinese literature tend to be particularly interested in the representation of social reality and political/ideological issues; and 5) Mo Yan's works travel well because they also make use of various Western literary traditions. Meng Xiangchun puts forward a theory that he tentatively terms "the theory of translation dynamics" or "translation interactology" and it will focus on how the numerous factors and considerations in translation act on one another within the target/source language and across languages. Within the framework of translation dynamics, he offers a descriptive parallel comparative 7W approach to integrated translation studies by juxtaposing the 7Ws of the original and target texts and identifying/decoding the nexus among these Ws vertically (of both the original text and the target text) and horizontally (within the same text), the 7Ws referring to "in what context for what who says what to whom in what way with what effect and feedback".展开更多

This paper, through the transitivity system, presents a critical discourse analysis of "Great Minds Meet"—Yang Lan One-on-One about G20, a talk show on Zhejiang TV of China in 2016. It verifies the applicability and feasibility of the transitivity system in decoding the speakers' ideological positions and their power relationship. Based on the analysis of six types of processes, this paper reveals:(1) the linguistic choices made by the interviewee Kim Yong present his optimistic attitude towards the main topics in this TV talk show;(2) the interviewee has a strong power in facilitating this show;(3) an atmosphere of harmony among all speakers is maintained constantly.展开更多

Scholars from post-colonial nations like Canada, India, China, Africa, and Latin America have argued that translation was used in the past as a means of depriving the colonised people of their voice. In the colonial structure, the hegemonic culture used to dominate, making the others subservient. Translation in the colonial period reflected that hierarchy. In this light, decades after the independence of India, translation from a reverse direction, that is, rendering popular English texts in minority languages, may be seen as a process of"writing back". Even if the original text concerned is not a "political" writing, and the translation is apparently meant for "safer-zones" such as "young students' literature", a tendency of claiming cultural equality, overlapping the translator's own cultural and literary heritage with the original author's, can be discovered. This paper attempts to focus on these issues in a particular text—the 1995 Bengali translation of Marie Corelli's 1921 science-fiction, The Secret Power. The purpose of this paper is to explore how Sudhindranath Raha has intermingled Biblical references and Western contexts with allusions to Indian culture and Sanskrit literature, thereby claiming a space for mutual understanding and respect between two cultures.展开更多

Since the rewriting theory was put forward, it has been widely studied and effectively applied in translation practice. Taking Lefevere’s rewriting theory asits theoretical basis and the Chinese subtitle translation of the Disney film Mulan as its corpus, this thesis adopts a qualitative research method to analyze the rewriting phenomenon in subtitle translation. The thesis attempts to sum up the strategies adopted bythe translator in the rewriting, as well as the factors affecting and manipulating the rewriting. The study demonstrates that the translator’s rewriting behavior has been manipulated by both ideology and poetics. The translator has adopted Chinese idioms and folkadages, highlighted the traditional Chinese culture and used alternative words to rewrite, all of which helps to transcend the ideological differences and cater to the needs of the Chinese audience.展开更多

To make a better China story about human rights and enhance China’s international discourse power in the field of human rights, we propose the text construction, translation and communication path of the construction of the human rights discourse system with Chinese characteristics from the cross-disciplinary perspective. Based on the examples of prevention and control of the CoVID-19 pandemic under the concept of putting people first, mainstream diplomatic linguistic data relevant to the fight against the novel coronavirus was collected through the internet. The human rights discourse with Chinese characteristics is constructed through a variety of texts focusing on putting the people first, the right to life, the right to health, the right to information, the right to privacy, the right to work and a sense of a community with a shared future for human beings. The core concepts of human rights have experienced the deepening process of decontextualization, abstraction and theorization to gradually conform to the expression habits of international audiences. The international communication effect is mainly positive in civil society. It shows that the construction of China’s human rights discourse system and the governance of international human rights discourse have achieved preliminary results. To enhance China’s discourse power on human rights, we need to add an interdisciplinary approach.展开更多
