Nowadays, most comm... Being the two primary approaches for full-field kinematics measurements, both subset-based local digital image correlation (DIC) and finite element-based global DIC have been extensively studied. Nowadays, most commercial DIC systems employ local DIC algorithm because of its advantages of straight forward principle and higher efficiency. However, several researchers argue that global DIC can provide better displacement results due to the displacement continuity constraint among adjacent elements. As such, thoroughly examining the performance of these two different DIC methods seems to be highly necessary. Here, the random errors associated with local DIC and two global DIC methods are theoretically analyzed at first. Subsequently, based on the same algorithmic details and parameters during analyses of numerical and real experiments, the performance of the different DIC approaches is fairly compared. Theoretical and experimental results reveal that local DIC outperforms its global counterpart in terms of both displacement results and computational efficiency when element (subset) size is no less than 11 pixels. 展开更多

When characterizing flows in miniaturized channels, the determination of the dynamic contact angle is important. By measuring the dynamic contact angle, the flow properties of the flowing liquid and the effect of material properties on the flow can be characterized. A machine vision based system to measure the contact angle of front or rear menisci of a moving liquid plug is described in this article. In this research, transparent flow channels fabricated on thermoplastic polymer and sealed with an adhesive tape are used. The transparency of the channels enables image based monitoring and measurement of flow variables, including the dynamic contact angle. It is shown that the dynamic angle can be measured from a liquid flow in a channel using the image based measurement system. An image processing algorithm has been developed in a MATLAB environment. Images are taken using a CCD camera and the channels are illuminated using a custom made ring light. Two fitting methods, a circle and two parabolas, are experimented and the results are compared in the measurement of the dynamic contact angles. 展开更多

Particle image velocimetry (PIV) experimental results of wake flow structure of a NACA0012 airfoil with small attack angle mounted above water surface are introduced.The experiment was carried out in a small-scale wind-wave tunnel.The diameter of wind-wave tunnel test section is 1.7 m (long) × 0.4 m (width) × 0.4 m (height).The flow fields around the airfoil were measured under four diffierent conditions by varying the distance between the airfoil and the water surface.The attack angle of the airfoil was kept 10- during the experiment.For each experimental condition,the time series of particle images was captured to calculate continuous evolution of the velocity fields.The velocity fields were ensemble averaged to get the statistic parameters such as mean velocity and vorticity.Typical instantaneous velocity fields for each case are introduced to show the basic flow structure of wind surface flow separation.The aerodynamic loads acting on the airfoil are analyzed qualitatively according to the mean vorticity distribution in the flow field based on the theory of vorticity aerodynamics.The results indicate that the flow structures and drag/lift force of the airfoil alter remarkably with the changing distance between the airfoil and water surface. 展开更多

In this work, we propose a convenient look-up-table-based (LUT-based) method to compensate for the non-linear error in captured fringe patterns. Without extra calibration, this LUT-based method completely utilizes the captured fringe pattern by recording the full-field differences. Satellite-derived sea surface temperatures(SSTs) from the tropical rainfall measuring mission(TRMM)microwave imager(TMI) and the advanced microwave scanning radiometer for the earth observing system(AMSR-E) were compared with non-pumped near-surface temperatures(NSTs) obtained from Argo profiling floats over the global oceans. Factors that might cause temperature differences were examined, including wind speed, columnar water vapor, liquid cloud water, and geographic location. The results show that both TMI and AMSR-E SSTs are highly correlated with the Argo NSTs; however, at low wind speeds, they are on average warmer than the Argo NSTs. The TMI performs slightly better than the AMSR-E at low wind speeds, whereas the TMI SST retrievals might be poorly calibrated at high wind speeds. The temperature differences indicate a warm bias of the TMI/AMSR-E when columnar water vapor is low, which can indicate that neither TMI nor AMSR-E SSTs are well calibrated at high latitudes. The SST in the Kuroshio Extension region has higher variability than in the Kuroshio region. The variability of the temperature difference between the satellite-retrieved SSTs and the Argo NSTs is lower in the Kuroshio Extension during spring. At low wind speeds, neither TMI nor AMSR-E SSTs are well calibrated, although the TMI performs better than the AMSR-E. 展开更多

A summer-time shipboard meteorological survey is described in the Northwest Indian Ocean. Shipboard observations are used to evaluate a satellite-based sea surface temperature(SST), and then find the main factors that are highly correlated with errors. Two satellite data, the first is remote sensing product of a microwave, which is a Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Microwave Imager(TMI), and the second is merged data from the microwave and infrared satellite as well as drifter observations, which is Operational Sea Surface Temperature and Sea Ice Analysis(OSTIA). The results reveal that the daily mean SST of merged data has much lower bias and root mean square error as compared with that from microwave products. Therefore the results support the necessary of the merging infrared and drifter SST with a microwave satellite for improving the quality of the SST. Furthermore, the correlation coefficient between an SST error and meteorological parameters, which include a wind speed, an air temperature, a relative humidity, an air pressure, and a visibility. The results show that the wind speed has the largest correlation coefficient with the TMI SST error. However, the air temperature is the most important factor to the OSTIA SST error. Meanwhile,the relative humidity shows the high correlation with the SST error for the OSTIA product. 展开更多

Aiming at the problem that the lattice feature exceeds the view field of the scanning electron microscope(SEM)measuring system,a new lattice measuring method is proposed based on integral imaging technology.When the system works,the SEM measuring system is equivalent to an integral image acquisition system.Firstly,a lattice measuring method is researched based on integral imaging theory.Secondly,the system parameters are calibrated by the VLSI lattice standard.Finally,the value of the lattice standard to be tested is determined based on the calibration parameters and the lattice measuring algorithm.The experimental results show that,compared with the traditional electron microscope measurement method,the relative error of the measured value of the algorithm is maintained within 0.2%,with the same level of measurement accuracy,but it expands the field of view of the electron microscope measurement system,which is suitable for the measurement of samples under high magnification. 展开更多

Reflectance model is a basic concept in computer vision. Some existing models combining the classical diffuse reflectance model and those for surfaces containing specular components can approximately describe real reflectance. But the ratio of diffuse and specular reflection decided manually has no clear meaning. We propose a new polynomial hybrid reflectance model. The reflectance map equation with a known shape (for example cylinder) as a sample is used to estimate parameters of the proposed reflectance model by least square regression algorithm. Then the reflectance parameters for surfaces of the same class of materials can be determined. Experiments are performed for a metal surface. The synthesis images produced by the proposed method and existing ones are compared with the real acquired image, and the results show that the proposed reflectance model is suitable for describing real reflectance. 展开更多

Similarity measure has long played a critical role and attracted great interest in various areas such as pattern recognition and machine perception.Nevertheless,there remains the issue of developing an efficient two-dimensional(2D)robust similarity measure method for images.Inspired by the properties of subspace,we develop an effective 2D image similarity measure technique,named transformation similarity measure(TSM),for robust face recognition.Specifically,the TSM method robustly determines the similarity between two well-aligned frontal facial images while weakening interference in the face recognition by linear transformation and singular value decomposition.We present the mathematical features and some odds to reveal the feasible and robust measure mechanism of TSM.The performance of the TSM method,combined with the nearest neighbor rule,is evaluated in face recognition under different challenges.Experimental results clearly show the advantages of the TSM method in terms of accuracy and robustness. 展开更多

The ability of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Microwave Imager(TRMM/TMI)for cloud liquid water(CLW)retrieval has been demonstrated in this study.Due to the great sensitivity of the TMI 85.5 GHz channels to CLW,the liquid water path(LWP)of nonprecipitating clouds over land can be successfully estimated using the VDISORT model based on the iteration steps.Both the vertical-polarized 85. 5 GHz single-channel method and the polarization-difference of 85.5 GHz method were applied to the LWP estimates over land regions during the Huaihe River Basin Energy and Water Cycle Experiment(HUBEX)in China.The retrieval results show reasonable agreement with the ground-based microwave radiometer measurements.When the surface emissivity or skin temperature is difficult to be made sure,the polarization-difference method shows advantages of providing estimates of LWP especially for low clouds because of its extremely insensitiveness to the surface skin temperature. 展开更多

This paper proposes a verifiable secret image sharing scheme based on compressive sensing, secret sharing, and image hashing. In this scheme, Toeplitz matrix generated by two chaotic maps is employed as measurement matrix. With the help of Shamir threshold scheme and image hashing, the receivers can obtain the stored values and the hash value of image. In the verifying stage and restoring stage, there must be at least t legal receivers to get the effective information. By comparing the hash value of the restored image with the hash value of original image, the scheme can effectively prevent the attacker from tampering or forging the shared images. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme has good recovery performance, can effectively reduce space, and is suitable for real-time transmission, storage, and verification. 展开更多

A Thorough Evaluation of the Passive Microwave Radiometer Measurements onboard Three Fengyun-3 Satellites

Up to now, 5 satellites including FY-3A(2008), FY-3B(2010), FY-3C(2013), F... Microwave Radiometer Imager(MWRI) is a key payload of China’s second generation polar meteorological satellite, i.e., Fengyun-3 series(FY-3). Up to now, 5 satellites including FY-3A(2008), FY-3B(2010), FY-3C(2013), FY-3D(2018), and FY-3E(2021) have been launched successfully to provide multiwavelength, all-weather, and global data for decades. Much progress has been made on the calibration of MWRI and a recalibrated MWRI brightness temperature(BT) product(V2) was recently released. This study thoroughly evaluates the accuracy of this new product from FY-3B, 3C, and 3D by using the simultaneous collocated Global Precipitation Measurement(GPM)Microwave Imager(GMI) measurements as a reference. The results show that the mean biases(MBEs) of the BT between MWRI and GMI are generally less than 0.5 K and the root mean squares(RMSs) between them are less than1.5 K. The previous notable ascending and descending difference of the MWRI has disappeared. This indicates that the new MWRI recalibration procedure is very effective in removing potential errors associated with the emission of the hot-load reflector. Analysis of the dependence of MBE on the latitude and earth scene temperature shows that MBE decreases with decreasing latitude over ocean. Furthermore, MBE over ocean decreases linearly with increasing scene temperature for almost all channels, whereas this does not occur over land. A linear regression fitting is then used to modify MWRI, which can reduce the MBE over ocean to be within 0.2 K. The standard deviation of error of GMI, FY-3B, and FY-3D MWRI BT data derived by using the three-cornered hat method(TCH) shows that GMI has the best overall performance over ocean except at 10.65 GHz where its standard deviation of error is slightly larger than that of FY-3D. Over land, the standard deviation of error of FY-3D is the lowest at almost all channels except at 89V. MWRI onboard FY-3 series satellites would serve as an important passive microwave radiometer member of the constellation to monitor key surface and atmospheric properties. 展开更多

The near-wake flow of a NACA0012 airfoils mounted above a water surface were experimentally studied in a wind/wave tunnel. The main objective of this study is to investigate the influence of the free surface on the structure of the airfoil trailing wake. The flow structure was measured with different ride heights between the airfoil and free surface using a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system. The Reynolds number based on the chord length of the airfoil was about 3.5×10^3. For each experimental condition, large amount of instantaneous velocity fields were captured and ensemble-averaged to get the spatial distributions of mean velocity and mean vorticity, as well as turbulence statistics. The results show that the flow structures of the airfoil wake varies remarkably with the change in the ride height. 展开更多

The measurement system consists of a common industrial CCD camera, an inexpensive LED light and a telecentric lens. In this work, the image pre-processing steps include stitching, illumination correction, binarization, denoising, and the elimination of unreal and defocused particles. A top-hat transformation is found to be very effective for the binarization of images with non-uniform background illumination. Particle trajectories measured within a certain exposure time are used to directly obtain particle size and velocity. The particle concentration is calculated by using the statistics of recognized particles within the field of view. We validate our method by analyzing experiments in a gas-droplet cyclone separator. This in-line image processing method can significantly reduce the measurement cost and avoid the data inversion process involved in the light scattering method. 展开更多
