Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), with her thousands of years history and contributions to the health of Chinese people, definitely is vital in CAM in China. Medical sciences including CAM and mainstream medicine, with unified specific aim, could be integrated and become integrative medicine. During the integration, TCM would contribute much more in the progress with her cultural background and clinical efficacy. After graduating from Jiangxi Medical College in 1955, he took part in the very first Western Doctors' Class for Learning Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) held in Beijing from March 1959 to December 1961. Prof. YU systematically learned TCM while taking this class. Since 1962, he has been working in the Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, eventually being promoted to a Chief Physician by the Beijing Municipal Government in May of 1981. In 1997, Prof. YU was selected as a well-known veteran for the National TCM Doctor Inheritance Work by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SATCM).
