Stress changes due to changes in fluid pressure and temperature in a faulted formation may lead to the opening/shearing of the fault. This can be due to subsurface(geo)engineering activities such as fluid injections and geologic disposal of nuclear waste.Such activities are expected to rise in the future making it necessary to assess their short-and long-term safety. Here,a new machine learning(ML)approach to model pore pressure and fault displacements in response to high-pressure fluid injection cycles is developed. The focus is on fault behavior near the injection borehole. To capture the temporal dependencies in the data, long short-term memory(LSTM)networks are utilized. To prevent error accumulation within the forecast window, four critical measures to train a robust LSTM model for predicting fault response are highlighted:(i)setting an appropriate value of LSTM lag,(ii)calibrating the LSTM cell dimension,(iii)learning rate reduction during weight optimization, and(iv)not adopting an independent injection cycle as a validation set.Several numerical experiments were conducted, which demonstrated that the ML model can capture peaks in pressure and associated fault displacement that accompany an increase in fluid injection. The model also captured the decay in pressure and displacement during the injection shut-in period.Further, the ability of an ML model to highlight key changes in fault hydromechanical activation processes was investigated, which shows that ML can be used to monitor risk of fault activation and leakage during high pressure fluid injections. 展开更多

Injection pain of propofol remains a common clinical problem. Previous studies demonstrated that propofol injection pain was alleviated by applying nitroglycerin ointment to the skin of injection site, which inspires us to test whether venous vasodilation induced by fluid preload could alleviate the pain. Different types or volumes of fluid preload were compared. 200 ASA Ⅰ-Ⅱ adult patients were randomly assigned to five groups of 40 each. A 20 G cannula was established on the dorsum or wrist of the hand. When fluid preload given with Plasma-Lyte A 100 m L(P100 group), 250 m L(P250 group), 500 m L(P500 group), 0.9% saline 500 m L(N500 group) or Gelofusine 500 m L(G500 group) was completed within 30 min, respectively, Propofol(0.5 mg/kg, 1%) was injected at a rate of 0.5 m L/s. A blind investigator assessed the pain using a four-point scale. Incidence of pain in P100, P250, and P500 groups was 87.5%, 57.5% and 35%, respectively(P〈0.05). The median pain intensity score was significantly lower in P500 group than that in P250 and P100 groups(P〈0.05 and P〈0.01, respectively). Comparison of the effect of different types of solution preload indicated that the highest incidence of pain was in N500 group(62.5%)(N500 vs. P500, P=0.014; N500 vs. G500, P=0.007). The median pain intensity score in N500 group was higher than that in P500 group(P〈0.05) and G500 group(P〈0.05). There was no significant difference between P500 and G500 groups. It is suggested that Plasma-Lyte A or Gelofusine preload with 500 m L before propofol injection is effective in alleviating propofol-induced pain. 展开更多

Based on the independently developed true triaxial multi-physical field large-scale physical simulation system of in-situ injection and production,we conducted physical simulation of long-term multi-well injection and production in the hot dry rocks of the Gonghe Basin,Qinghai Province,NW China.Through multi-well connectivity experiments, the spatial distribution characteristics of the natural fracture system in the rock samples and the connectivity between fracture and wellbore were clarified. The injection and production wells were selected to conduct the experiments, namely one injection well and two production wells, one injection well and one production well. The variation of several physical parameters in the production well was analyzed, such as flow rate, temperature, heat recovery rate and fluid recovery. The results show that under the combination of thermal shock and injection pressure, the fracture conductivity was enhanced, and the production temperature showed a downward trend. The larger the flow rate, the faster the decrease. When the local closed area of the fracture was gradually activated, new heat transfer areas were generated, resulting in a lower rate of increase or decrease in the mining temperature. The heat recovery rate was mainly controlled by the extraction flow rate and the temperature difference between injection and production fluid. As the conductivity of the leak-off channel increased, the fluid recovery of the production well rapidly decreased. The influence mechanisms of dominant channels and fluid leak-off on thermal recovery performance are different. The former limits the heat exchange area, while the latter affects the flow rate of the produced fluid. Both of them are important factors affecting the long-term and efficient development of hot dry rock. 展开更多

The characteristics, origin and injection history of the Dongfang gas field, the largest gas field found in the Yinggehai basin, are studied by integrated geological, geothermal and geochemical data. The gas field shows considerable variation in hydrocarbon gas, nitrogen and carbon dioxide content, aud has been filled by at least four stage fluids. A strong thermal anomaIy caused by hydrothermal fluid flows occurs in the gas field, as evidenced rrom drill-stem test and fluid iuclusion homogenization temperatures, rock-eval tmax, vitrinite reflectance as well as clay-mineral transformation profiles. Such a thermal anomaly suggests focused, rapid flow of deeply-sourced hydrothermal rluids. The inter-reservoir heterogeneities, the strong migotion rractionation related to abrupt changes in pressure and temperature and tbe short-lived, transient nature of the thermal effect of fluid flow are evidences of episodic rluid injections from the overpressured systems into the reservoirs. 展开更多

The problem of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow on a moving surface with the power-law velocity and special injection/blowing is investigated. A scaling group transformation is used to reduce the governing equations to a system of ordinary differen- tial equations. The skin friction coefficients of the MHD boundary layer flow are derived, and the approximate solutions of the flow characteristics are obtained with the homotopy analysis method (HAM). The approximate solutions are easily computed by use of a high order iterative procedure, and the effects of the power-law index, the magnetic parameter, and the special suction/blowing parameter on the dynamics are analyzed. The obtained results are compared with the numerical results published in the literature, verifying the reliability of the approximate solutions. 展开更多

The Jinding Zn-Pb deposit has been generally considered to have formed from circulating basinal fluids in a relatively passive way, with fluid flow being controlled by structures and sedimentary facies, similar to many other sediments-hosted base metal deposits. However, several recent studies have revealed the presence of sand injection structures, intrusive breccias, and hydraulic fractures in the open pit of the Jinding deposit and suggested that the deposit was formed from explosive release of overpres- sured fluids. This study reports new observations of fluid overpressure-related structures from under- ground workings (Paomaping and Fengzishan), which show clearer crosscutting relationships than in the open pit. The observed structures include: 1) sand (--rock fragment) dikes injecting into fractures in solidified rocks; 2) sand (~rock fragment) bodies intruding into unconsolidated or semi-consolidated sediments; 3) disintegrated semi-consolidated sand bodies; and 4) veins and breccias formed from hydraulic fracturing of solidified rocks followed by cementation of hydrothermal minerals. The development of ore minerals (sphalerite) in the cement of the various clastic injection and hydraulic fractures indicate that these structures were formed at the same time as mineralization. The development of hydraulic fractures and breccias with random orientation indicates small differential stress during mineralization, which is different from the stress field with strong horizontal shortening prior to miner- alization. Fluid flow velocity may have been up to more than 11 m/s based on calculations from the size of the fragments in the clastic dikes. The clastic injection and hydraulic fracturing structures are interpreted to have formed from explosive release of overpressured fluids, which may have been related to either magmatic intrusions at depth or seismic activities that episodically tapped an overpressured fluid reservoir. Because the clastic injection and hydraulic structures are genetically linked with the mineralizing fluid source, they can be used as a guide for mineral exploration. 展开更多

Animal experiments have confirmed that mesenchymal stem cells can inhibit motor neuron apoptosis and inflammatory factor expression and increase neurotrophic factor expression. Therefore, mesenchymal stem cells have been shown to exhibit prospects in the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. However, the safety of their clinical application needs to be validated. To investigate the safety of intrathecal injection of Wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis therapy, 43 patients(16 females and 27 males, mean age of 57.3 years) received an average dose of 0.42 × 106 cells/kg through intrathecal administration at the cervical, thoracic or lumbar region depending on the clinical symptoms. There was a 2 month interval between two injections. The adverse events occurring during a 6-month treatment period were evaluated. No adverse events occurred. Headache occurred in one case only after first injection of stem cells. This suggests that intrathecal injection of Wharton's Jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells is well tolerated in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. In order to realize steady-state operation of the neutral beam injection(NBI) system with high beam energy,an accurate thermal analysis and a prediction about working conditions of heat-removal structures inside high-heat-flux(HHF) components in the system are key issues. In this paper, taking the HHF ion dump with swirl tubes in NBI system as an example,an accurate thermal dynamic simulation method based on computational fluid dynamics(CFD) and the finite volume method is presented to predict performance of the HHF component. In this simulation method, the Eulerian multiphase method together with some empirical corrections about the inter-phase transfer model and the wall heat flux partitioning model are considered to describe the subcooled boiling. The reliability of the proposed method is validated by an experimental example with subcooled boiling inside swirl tube. The proposed method provides an important tool for the refined thermal and flow dynamic analysis of HHF components, and can be extended to study the thermal design of other complex HHF engineering structures in a straightforward way.The simulation results also verify that the swirl tube is a promising heat removing structure for the HHF components of the NBI system. 展开更多

To study the fluid dynamic response mechanism under the working condition of water injection well borehole, based on the microelement analysis of fluid mechanics and the classical theory of hydrodynamics,a fluid microelement pressure-flow rate relationship model is built to derive and solve the dynamic distribution of fluid pressure and flow rate in the space of well borehole.Combined with the production data of a typical deviated well in China, numerical simulations and analyses are carried out to analyze the dynamic distribution of wellbore pressure at different injection pressures and injection volumes, the delayed and attenuated characteristics of fluid transmission in tube, and the dynamic distribution of wellbore pressure amplitude under the fluctuation of wellhead pressure. The pressure loss along the wellbore has nothing to do with the absolute pressure, and the design of the coding and decoding scheme for wave code communication doesn’t need to consider the absolute pressure during injecting. When the injection pressure is constant, the higher the injection flow rate at the wellhead, the larger the pressure loss along the wellbore. The fluid wave signal delay amplitude mainly depends on the length of the wellbore. The smaller the tubing diameter, the larger the fluid wave signal attenuation amplitude. The higher the target wave code amplitude(differential pressure identification root mean square)generated at the same well depth, the greater the wellhead pressure wave amplitude required to overcome the wellbore pressure loss. 展开更多

This paper studies the influence of feed injection on the hydrodynamic behavior of fluid catalytic cracking riser reactors. Experiments were conducted in a cold model of 186 mm ID with two oppositely inclined secondary air feed nozzles. The flow structure was determined by means of the axial static pressure measurements and local radial optic fiber probe measurements on different levels with emphasis on the sections downstream of the secondary injection. The measurements reveal that the secondary injection plays a crucial role on riser hydrodynamics. Just above the secondary injection, the flow and mixing are strongly affected, while below the secondary injection the effect is weak. The radial profile just downstream of secondary injection demonstrates wavy features. The effective region of secondary injection could be estimated by the axial pressure gradient profiles and/or the radial profiles of local solids velocity and density. 展开更多

Natural fractures are generally well developed in most hydrocarbon and geothermal reservoirs, which can produce complex fracture networks due to the activation of fractures during hydraulic stimulation. The present paper is devoted to developing a method to investigate the activation characteristics of fracture under injection-shearing coupled condition at laboratory scale. The fluid is injected into the single-fractured granite until the fracture is activated based on the triaxial direct shear tests. The results show that injection process can significantly influence the shear stress distribution field, resulting in release of shear stress and relative slip between the opposite sides of the fractured surface. The injectioninduced activation of fracture is strongly dependent on the stress states. When the normal stress increases, the injection-induced activation pressure increases, and the comparatively high normal stress can restrain the fracture activation. The fracture deformation mechanisms during fluid injection are also discussed preliminarily with the experimental data. The sensitivity of shear stress to fluid injection increases with increase of shear stress level, while it decreases under high normal stress. The results can facilitate our understanding of the natural fracture activation behavior during fluid pressure stimulation. 展开更多

From August 21, 2000 to October 20, 2000,a fluid injection-induced seismicity experiment has been carried out in the KTB (German Continental Deep Drilling Program). The KTB seismic network recorded more than 2 700 events. Among them 237 events were of high signal-to-noise ratio, and were processed and accurately located. When the events were located, non KTB events were weeded out by Wadatis method. The standard deviation, mean and median were obtained by Jackknife's technique, and finally the events were accurately located by Gei-gers method so that the mean error is about 0.1 km. No earthquakes with focal depth greater than 9.3 km, which is nearly at the bottom of the hole, were detected. One of the explanation is that at such depths the stress levels may not close to the rocks frictional strength so that failure could not be induced by the relatively small perturbation in pore pressure. Or at these depths there may be no permeable, well-oriented faults. This depth may be in close proximity to the bottom of the hole to the brittle-ductile transition, even in this relatively stable interior of the in-teraplate. This phenomenon is explained by the experimental results and geothermal data from the superdeep bore-hole. 展开更多

An outward-going intervertebral foramina puncture along the side of lumbar vertebra spinous process was used to avoid infusing drugs into the subarachnoid space. However, we still had an inadvertent malpractice. The patient was diagnosed with lumbar discogenic lower back pain and was administrated an outward-going intervertebral foramina puncture through the side of lumbar vertebra spinous process (L5-S1). The drug mixture, containing triamcinolone acetonide suspension, cyanocobalamin and bupivacaine HCl, was injected. The patient had palpitations, chest tightness, dyspnea, bradycardia, and hypotension 3 min right after the injection. The vital signs gradually stabilized after treatment with atropine sulfate;however, he had complete sensorimotor loss below the level of distribution of the T2 spinal nerve. The cerebrospinal fluid pressure was lower in the subarachnoid space and the cerebrospinal fluid was slightly turbid and light pink in color. Six hours later, the sensory, motor, defecation, and urination functions returned to normal level. The patient had follow-up evaluations at 1, 3, and 6 months. The lumbar and hip pain was mild-to-severe at times as usual, but there were no other neurologic sequelae. Conclusions: This case showed that there is a risk that drugs may stray into the subarachnoid space during an outward-going intervertebral foramina puncture through the side of lumbar vertebral spinous process. The complication may occur due to a distal nerve root cyst. The result of triamcinolone acetonide suspension and cyanocobalamin injection into the cerebrospinal fluid was not as serious as we imagined. 展开更多

Based on the petrology, isotope geochemistry and fluid inclusions analysis,we established the evolutionary mode of the diagenetic fluid of dawsonite-bearing sandstone in the Jiyang Depression.Dawsonite-bearing sandstone is characterized by double injection of CO_(2)and oil-gas in the Jiyang Depression that have experienced a relatively complex diagenetic fluid evolution process. The diagenetic sequence of secondary minerals involves secondary enlargement of quartz,kaolinite,first-stage calcite,dawsonite,second-stage calcite, ferrocalcite, dolomite and ankerite.Hydrocarbon charging in the dawsonite-bearing sandstone occurred at around 2.6–0 Myr.The CO_(2)charging event occurred during Dongying tectonism, forming the Pingfangwang CO_(2)gas reservoir, which provided an abundant carbon source for dawsonite precipitation.Carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions of dawsonite demonstrate that CO_(2)forming the dawsonite was of an inorganic origin derived from the mantle, and that water mediating the proc-ess during dawsonite precipitation was sequestered brine with a fluid temperature of 82℃.The evolutionary sequence of the diagenetic fluid in the dawsonite-bearing sandstone was:alkaline syngenetic fluids, weak alkaline fluids during organic acid forma-tion,acidic fluids in the early stage of CO_(2)injection,alkaline fluids in the late stage of CO_(2)injection,and weak alkaline fluids during oil and gas charging. The mode indicates an increase in-HCO_(3)because of the CO_(2)injection,and the loss of Ca^(2+)and Mg^(2+)due to the precipitation of carbonate minerals. Therefore, the evolutionary mode of diagenetic fluids is in good agreement with high HCO_(3)^(-),low Ca^(2+)and low Mg^(2+)composition of the present formation water in the dawsonite-bearing sandstone. 展开更多

In order to improve our understanding of rock fracture and fault instability driven by high-pressure fluid sources, the authors carried out rock fracture tests using granite under a confining pressure of 80 MPa with fluid injection in the laboratory. Furthermore, we tested a number of numerical models using the FLAC;modeling software to find the best model to represent the experimental results. The high-speed multichannel acoustic emission(AE) waveform recording system used in this study made it possible to examine the total fracture process through detailed monitoring of AE hypocenters and seismic velocity. The experimental results show that injecting high-pressure oil into the rock sample can induce AE activity at very low stress levels and can dramatically reduce the strength of the rock. The results of the numerical simulations show that major experimental results, including the strength, the temporal and spatial patterns of the AE events, and the role of the fluid can be represented fairly well by a model involving(1) randomly distributed defect elements to model pre-existing cracks,(2) random modification of rock properties to represent inhomogeneity introduced by different mineral grains, and(3)macroscopic inhomogeneity. Our study, which incorporates laboratory experiments and numerical simulations, indicates that such an approach is helpful in finding a better model not only for simulating experimental results but also for upscaling purposes. 展开更多

In the design of negative hydrogen ion sources,a magnetic filter field of tens of Gauss at the expansion region is essential to reduce the electron temperature, which usually results in a magnetic field of around 10 Gauss in the driver region, destabilizing the discharge. The magnetic shield technique is proposed in this work to reduce the magnetic field in the driver region and improve the discharge characteristics. In this paper,a three-dimensional fluid model is developed within COMSOL to study the influence of the magnetic shield on the generation and transport of plasmas in the negative hydrogen ion source. It is found that when the magnetic shield material is applied at the interface of the expansion region and the driver region, the electron density can be effectively increased. For instance, the maximum of the electron density is 6.7×10^(17)m^(-3)in the case without the magnetic shield, and the value increases to 9.4×10^(17)m^(-3)when the magnetic shield is introduced. 展开更多

The rheological features of an incompressible axi-symmetric Casson-Maxwell nanofluid flow between two stationary disks are examined. The lower permeable disk is located at z=-a,while the upper disk is placed at z=a.Both the disks are porous and subjected to uniform injection. The fluid properties such as thermal conductivity vary with temperature. The Cattaneo-Christov thermal expression is implemented along with the Buongiorno nanofluid theory.By operating the similarity functions, the reduced form of the fluid model in terms of ordinary differential equations is obtained and solved by the bvp4 c numerical technique. The physical quantities are demonstrated graphically on the velocity and temperature fields.Three-dimensional flow arrangements and twodimensional contour patterns against several dimensionless variables are also sketched. The numerical values of the local Nusselt and Sherwood numbers for various quantities are presented in tabular set-up.The intensity of the linear relationship between the Nusselt and Sherwood numbers is assessed through Pearson’s product-moment correlation technique. The statistical implication of the linear association between variables is also examined by the t-test statistic approach. 展开更多

The couette dusty flow between two horizontal parallel porous flat plates with transverse sinusoidal injection of the dusty fluid at the stationary plate and its corresponding removal by constant suction through the plate in uniform motion was analyzed. Due to this type of injection velocity the dusty flow becomes 3D. Perturbation method is used to obtain the expressions for the velocity and temperature fields of both the fluid and dust. It was found that the velocity profiles of both the fluid and dust in the main flow direction decrease with the increase of the mass concentration of the dust particles, and those in cross flow direction increase with an increase in the mass concentration of the dust particles up to the middle of the channel and thereafter decrease with increase in mass concentration of the dust particles. The skin friction components Tx and Tz in the main flow and transverse directions respectively increase with an increase in the mass concentration of the dust particles (or) injection parameter. The heat transfer coefficient decreases with the increase of the injection parameter and increases with the increase in the mass concentration of the dust particles. 展开更多
