This research aims to investigate the application of Krashen’s Input Hypothesis to junior high school English listening class.120 first year students were chosen and divided into a control group and an experimental group,each containing 60 students.During the one-semester treatment,the two groups adopt the traditional teaching method and the teaching method integrated with Krashen’s Input Hypothesis respectively.The results showed that by applying Krashen’s Input Hypothesis to junior high school English listening class,students’listening skills can be improved effectively. 展开更多

Few studies have to date gone behind the scenes to unveil the hidden metaphor-metonymy structure underpinning the input hypothesis ( Krashen 1981 ) despite overt attention paid to it over the years. In an effort to use a fine-grained metaphor-analysis approach( e. g. , Lakoffand Johnson 1980, 1999) to revisit the input hypothesis, this study looks into its thrust--the causal effect of comprehensible input upon comprehension--in the hope of charting out its hidden organization. By discovering a theme of CAUSATION pivoted on space-based metaphors and metonyrnies, the present study brings to relief two fallacies committed in the input hypothesis. First, the heavy dependence on the prototypicaUy physical-spatial hierarchy leads to a red-herring fallacy, whose inconsistency defies rather than supports its statement about comprehensible input as the overriding cause. Second, although there is no denying that comprehensible input is a significant source of language gains, to enthrone it as the sole causal variable to the exclusion of all the other important variables, especially the agency of the 1.2 learner who should have been positioned in the spotlight in the first place, is another fallacy of immense magnitude. 展开更多

This paper chiefly examines Chinese English teachers' beliefs and attitudes towards balancing input and output in interactionclassroom in Higher Vocational College, particularly in speaking classes, for first-year non-English majors. With respect to the overallresearch approach, case study will gain prominence in the methodological design since teachers' beliefs and attitudes will be highlight-ed and explored in depth. It can be predicted that some teaching interactive activities and strategies will be concluded and suggested inEnglish teaching. As far as I am concerned, interaction is an effective avenue to balance input and output, this can serve as linguistic da-ta for grammar and sentence building, as well as to modify and adjust their output in ways that improve their current linguistic and com-municative competence. As a whole, teachers' beliefs and attitudes towards the role input and output played in interactive classroomwill be explored. Furthermore, the teaching approaches of balancing input and output and the rationale behind them will be integrated aswell. 展开更多

This paper critically analyzes Roberto Guzman’s approach to teaching English, as outlined in his TED talk “Teaching English without Teaching English”. While Guzman focuses on inspirational teaching and open-ended discussion, the analysis highlights some shortcomings of his methods from three perspectives: 1) whether the approach aligns with socio-cultural theories, 2) whether it overlooks the importance of input assumptions, and 3) whether it can effectively improve students’ communicative competence. Through this analysis, the paper sheds light on the potential limitations of Guzman’s approach to teaching English and provides insights into how educators can design more effective language teaching methods. 展开更多

This paper looks into the case of a school in Macao nominated as the first(and so far the only)China-Canada-United States English Immersion(CCUEI)centre in the Macao Special Administrative Region(Macao SAR)China for the experimentation and application of English immersion instruction(EI)in the K1-3 and Primary 1-2 classes.Drawing on Krashen’s Input Hypothesis(1982)and Cummins’(2000)framework of instruction for language learning and academic achievement in the formal school context,the authors report their observations by analyzing the data collected from school teachers and participation in classes and by reflecting on their experiences,and suggest improvement that can be made to teachers’linguistic and communicative competence,in terms of quantity and quality of comprehensible input and expected output,and thus the sustainability of English immersion classrooms in a Chinese context. 展开更多
