Based on the simulation of Caussian beam interference, we adopt a chirped diffraction grating to achieve a specific interference pattern. The experimental results match well with the simulations. The portability and flexibility of the structured illumination chip can be increased greatly through horizontal encapsulation. High levels of integration, compared with the conventional structured illumination approach, make this chip very compact, with a footprint of only around 1 mm2. The chip has no optical lenses and can be easily combined with a microfluidic system. These properties would make the chip very suitable for portable 3D scanner and compact super-resolution microscopy applications.展开更多

The vast majority of these demonstrations have been for optically pumped devices. Electrically pumped devices are advantageous for applications and could demonstrate concepts not amenable for optical pumping. However, there have been relatively few demonstrations of electrically pumped small metal cavity lasers. This lack of results is due to the following reasons: there are limited types of electrically pumped gain media available; there is a significantly greater level of complexity required in the fabrication of electrically pumped devices; finally, the required components for electrical pumping restrict cavity design options and furthermore make it intrinsically more difficult to achieve lasing. This review looks at the motivation for electrically pumped nanolasers, the key issues that need addressing for them to be realized, the results that have been achieved so far including devices where lasing has not been achieved, and potential new directions that could be pursued.展开更多

Due to the high permittivity of the polymer film, at proper polymer film thicknesses, the index-matching condition of the dielectrics at both sides of the metal can be satisfied for supporting LRSPP modes, and the electromagnetic field above the metal can be localized well. It is found that these LRSPP modes have both long propagation lengths and subwavelength mode expansion above the metal at the optimal polymer film thickncsses. Furthermore, the requirements on the refractive index and the thickness of the polymer film to support LRSPP modes at the optimal thicknesses are found to be not critical.展开更多

The cross-coupling terms are neglected in the first sub-step, but evaluated and doubly used in the second sub-step. The order of two sub-steps is reversed for each transverse magnetic field component so that the cross-coupling terms are always expressed in implicit form, thus the calculation is very efficient and stable. Moreover, an improved six-point finite-difference scheme with high accuracy independent of specific structures of waveguide is also constructed to approximate the cross-coupling terms along the transverse directions. The imaginary-distance procedure is used to assess the validity and utility of the present method. The field patterns and the normalized propagation constants of the fundamental mode for a buried rectangular waveguide and a rib waveguide are presented. Solutions are in excellent agreement with the benchmark results from the modal transverse resonance method.展开更多

Two micro-heaters are fabricated on the top of two micro-rings respectively, which are employed to modulate the micro-rings to perform the function of a tunable optical filter by the thermo–optic effect. The static response test indicates that the extinction ratio and 3-d B bandwidth are 29.01 d B and 0.21 nm respectively, the dynamic response test indicates that the 10%–90% rise and 90%–10% fall time of the filter are 16 μs and 12 μs, respectively, which can meet the requirements of optical communication and information processing. Finally, the power consumption of the device is also characterized, and the total power consumption is about 9.43 m W/nm, which has been improved efficiently.展开更多

The length deviation is optimized to be 19.8 μm in a refractive index range between 1.470 and 1.545. We fabricate the AMZI waveguide by lithography and wet etching method. The imprinting bonding and laser polishing method is proposed and investigated. The insertion loss is between-80.36 dB and-10.63 dB. The average and linear sensitivity are 768.1 dB/RIU and 548.95 dB/RIU, respectively. And the average and linear detection resolution of the sensor are 1.3010-6 RIU (RIU:refractive index unit) and 1.8210-5 RIU, respectively. This sensor has a fast and cost-effective fabrication process which can be used in the cases of requiring portability and disposability.

文摘Long-range surface plasmon polariton (LRSPP) modes in an asymmetrical system, in which the thin metal film is sandwiched between a semi-infinite substrate and a high permittivity polymer film with a finite thickness, are theoret~ ically calculated and analyzed. Furthermore, the requirements on the refractive index and the thickness of the polymer film to support LRSPP modes at the optimal thicknesses are found to be not critical.
文摘A modified alternating direction implicit algorithm is proposed to solve the full-vectorial finite-difference beam propagation method formulation based on H fields. Solutions are in excellent agreement with the benchmark results from the modal transverse resonance method.

文摘Beam deflectors are important optical elements which can control the propagation direction of the beam in free space. However, with the development of miniaturization of the optical systems, conventional reflector-based mechanical beam deflectors confront a huge challenge due to their large sizes and incompatibility to the device integration. Here we propose an all-dielectric flat metasurface beam deflector which is composed of a single layer array of TiO_2 nanoantennas resting on a fused-silica substrate.Numerical simulations are performed to demonstrate that the proposed deflectors are able to efficiently deflect the incident beam for different angles with transmission efficiency higher than 80%at visible frequencies. This ultrathin all-dielectric metasurface deflector may have great potential applications in integrated optics.

文摘A high-speed silicon modulator with broad optical bandwidth is proposed based on a symmetrically configured Mach- Zehnder interferometer. Careful phase bias control and traveling-wave design are used to improve the high-speed perfor- mance. Over a broadband wavelength range, high-speed operation up to 30 Gbit/s with a 4.5 dB-5.5 dB extinction ratio is experimentally demonstrated with a low driving voltage of 3 V.

文摘In this paper, we design and fabricate a silicon integrated optical filter consisting of two cascaded micro-ring resonators and two straight waveguides. Finally, the power consumption of the device is also characterized, and the total power consumption is about 9.43 m W/nm, which has been improved efficiently.

文摘An optical phased array(OPA)is a promising non-mechanical technique for beam steering in solid-state light detection and ranging systems. The performance of the OPA largely depends on the phase shifter, which afects power consumption, insertion loss, modulation speed, and footprint. However, for a thermo-optic phase shifter, achieving good performance in all aspects is challenging due to trade-ofs among these aspects. In this work,we propose and demonstrate two types of energy-efcient optical phase shifters that overcome these trade-ofs and achieve a well-balanced performance in all aspects.Additionally, the proposed round-spiral phase shifter is robust in fabrication and fully compatible with deep ultraviolet(DUV)processes, making it an ideal building block for large-scale photonic integrated circuits(PICs).Using the high-performance phase shifter,we propose a periodic OPA with low power consumption, whose maximum electric power consumption within the feld of view is only 0.33 W.Moreover,we designed Gaussian power distribution in both the azimuthal(ψ)and polar(θ)directions and experimentally achieved a large sidelobe suppression ratio of 15.1 and 25 dB,respectively.

文摘Steering light into logic patterns with two-dimensional cascaded multimode waveguide is demonstrated. By employing the imaging properties of 2D multimode interference (MMI) and partial phase modulation method, the design ideas and the implementing methods of the 2^(2×2) bits type spatial logic steering are discussed; therefore the structure of logical pattern is proposed. Numerical simulation is carried out to verify the design in detail by using the beam propagation method. It is expected to realize logic coders by using the integrated optical methods and exploit their potential applications in the field of optical logic.

文摘We report a low-cost manufacturing approach for fabricating monolithic multi-wavelength sources for dense wavelength division multiplexing(DWDM)systems that offers high yield and eliminates crystal regrowth and selective area epitaxy steps that are essential in traditional fabrication methods. The source integrates an array of distributed feedback(DFB)lasers with a passive coupler and semiconductor optical amplifier(SOA).Ridge waveguide lasers with sampled Bragg side wall gratings have been integrated using quantum well intermixing to achieve a fully functional four-channel DWDM source with 0.8 nm wavelength spacing and residual errors<0.13 nm.The output power from the SOA is>10 mW per channel making the source suitable for use in passive optical networks(PONs).We have also investigated using multisection phase-shifted sampled gratings to both increase the effective grating coupling coefficient and precisely control the channel lasing wavelength spacing. An 8-channel DFB laser array with 100 GHz channel spacing was demonstrated using a sampled grating with twoπ-phase-shifted sections in each sampling period. The entire array was fabricated by only a single step of electron beam lithography.
