Motivated to solve these challenges, a new technology is driving a trend that shifts the function of centralized cloud computing to edge devices of networks. Several edge computing technologies originating from different backgrounds to decrease latency, improve SE, and support the massive machine type of communication have been emerging. This paper comprehensively presents a tutorial on three typical edge computing technologies, namely mobile edge computing, cloudlets, and fog computing. In particular, the standardization efforts, principles, architectures, and applications of these three technologies are summarized and compared. From the viewpoint of radio access network, the differences between mobile edge computing and fog computing are highlighted, and the characteristics of fog computing-based radio access network are discussed. Finally, open issues and future research directions are identified as well.展开更多

A remote sensed and controlled unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) path tracking test-bed was devel- oped and multiple UGV's tracking error signals were measured in the simulation for performance evaluation. Results show that with the same network bandwidth constraints, the proposed algorithm can reduce,, the accumulated and maximum errors of UGV path tracking by over 60% compared with the conventional static algorithm.展开更多

It started with the wearable devices and any digital device connected online, and evolved to a web connected network linking everything from devices, sensors, machines, people, processes, companies, and so on, creating the Interact of Everything concept. There are many application areas, but one stands out due to its popularization and importance to industry, Sports, and specifically Football. Football has been reinventing itself with the implementation of technology, recreating the formula used in the United States Major Sports, where technology helps to enhance the spectacle experience, expand game analysis by coaches, players, and media, provide live refereeing and improve health recoveries and detection of injuries. This research is a state-of-situation regarding technology in football, recognizing the presently used technologies and what could be implemented, and ultimately measuring the impact of these devices in Football.展开更多

Under the current situation, industrialists encounter several chal- lenges to achieve re-industrialization. Firstly, the cost and technical thresholds for industrialists to leverage emerging technologies are high. Secondly, there are huge quantities and numerous types of Internet of things (IoT) devices in smart factories, warehouses and offices. The enormous extents of data exchange and communication, manage- ment, monitoring and control of IoT devices as well as the establishment and maintenance of a reliable cloud platform hinder industrialists to implement an integrated smart production management. Therefore, to achieve re-indus- trialization, an industrial Internet of things (IIoT) suite consisting of a micro-services-based IIoT cloud platform and IIoT-based smart hub is proposed, which helps to materialize re-industrialization and to conduct industrial upgrading and transformation to achieve smart production and high value-added manufacturing processes.展开更多

Between these evolutions, we are witnessing new teaching locations or sites called "learning labs". The aim of this article is to present how the deployment of such a location (sometimes named third places) can offer some new perspectives, modifies the way of teaching and gives some interesting results both from the teachers' point of view (in terms of assessment of knowledge and know-how) and for the learners (in terms of motivation, immersion and exchanges). In a second phase, we will focus on the predominant role that electronics can take in setting up formations, especially around "connected objects" (i.e. communicating devices connected to networks). We will illustrate concretely our idea around an experimental training which has obtained the national label GEN ("Grande Ecole du Numkrique").展开更多

The Third Industrial Revolution (TIR) is underpinned by the integration or mass customization of services and/or goods. The benefits of real-time mass customization cannot be over-stated as goods and services become indistinguishable and are co-produced as "ServGoods", resulting in an overwhelming economic advantage to the industrialized countries where the consuming customers are at the same time the co-producing producers. Adding sensors to these ServGoods and letting them connect or communicate among themselves or with other ServGoods can result in an Intemet of Things (i.e., connected ServGoods). A number of considerations, consequences and concerns relating to such an Intemet of Connected ServGoods are discussed herein.展开更多

These technologies are permeating the manufacturing industry and enable the fusion of physical and virtual worlds through cyber-physical systems (CPS), which mark the advent of the fourth stage of industrial production (i.e., Industry 4.0). The widespread application of CPS in manufacturing environments renders manufacturing sys- tems increasingly smart. To advance research on the implementation of Industry 4.0, this study examines smart manufacturing systems for Industry 4.0. First, a conceptual framework of smart manufacturing systems for Industry 4.0 is presented. Second, demonstrative scenarios that pertain to smart design, smart machining, smart control, smart monitoring, and smart scheduling, are presented. Key technologies and their possible applications to Industry 4.0 smart manufacturing systems are reviewed based on these demonstrative scenarios. Finally, challenges and future perspectives are identified and discussed.展开更多

Here, using a field-portable, smartphone fluorimeter to assess water quality based on the pH response of a designer probe, a map of pH of public tap water sites has been obtained. A custom designed Android application digitally processed and mapped the results utilizing the global positioning system (GPS) service of the smartphone. The map generated indicates no disruption in pH for all sites measured, and all the data are assessed to fall inside the upper limit of local government regulations, consistent with authority reported measurements. This implementation demonstrates a new security concept: network environmental forensics utilizing the potential of novel smartgrid analysis with wireless sensors for the detection of potential disruption to water quality at any point in the city. This concept is applicable across all smartgrid strategies within the next generation of the Internet of Things and can be extended on national and global scales to address a range of target analytes, both chemical and biological.展开更多
