A Study of English Translation Strategies of Subtitles of the Domestic Animated Film Chang’an from the Perspective of Eco-translatology

This article conducts an analysis and exploration of the English subtitles translation of the domestic animated film Chang’an from the perspective of eco-translatology.Taking three-dimensional transformation as the entry point,it analyzes the adaptation and selection of subtitle translators in the translation process from the dimensions of language,culture,and communication in Chang’an,aiming to enrich the practical analysis of eco-translatology and provide valuable insights and references for the theoretical construction and practical application of eco-translatology.This article enriches the practical analysis of eco-translatology and also validates to a certain extent the applicability of“three-dimensional”transformation.

Subtitle Translation From the Perspective of Eco-Translatology: A Case Study of China Bouquet

China Bouquet shows the uniqueness of Chinese culture from 20 perspectives, serving as an excellent work for disseminating Chinese culture to the world. This paper studies the documentary subtitle translation of China Bouquet from the perspective of eco-translatology. Through analyzing subtitle translation of China Bouquet from linguistic, cultural, and communicative dimensions, the paper aims to propose an effective way to translate and transform subtitles with Chinese characteristics.

Analysis of the Subtitle Translation of The Shawshank Redemption from the Perspective of the Skopos Theory

Translation is an important communication skill between different languages.In modern society,audiovisual products are distributed to worldwide areas as a popular means of mass media.As the globalization of economy and culture is advancing in the new century,audiovisual subtitle translation plays an increasingly important part.Good subtitles can enhance the audience’s experience of appreciating foreign films and make cultural communication more effective.This thesis conducts a brief survey on the strategies for film subtitle translation using the case study of the famous film The Shawshank Redemption.In this paper,based on Skopos theory,the author made a comprehensive analysis of subtitling activities and pointed out that subtitling,as a specialized area of translation,is not only guided by translation studies but also under the constraints of film properties.The Skopos theory of film subtitle translation is to provide,within the constraints of time and space,a well-translated subtitle that can contribute to a good understanding of what is happening on the screen.In short,the end justifies the means.Therefore,during the process of subtitle translation,the subtitler should take all the factors into consideration to identify the translation purpose,and then adopt corresponding translation strategies.From this perspective,the author takes the Skopos theory as instruction and applies the reduction and addition method to analyze the film subtitle translation.In the age of globalization,foreign films are increasingly entering people’s lives.Watching foreign films is a popular and effective way to understand foreign cultures.However,in China,subtitle translation has not attracted as much academic attention as it deserves and few theories could be appropriately applied to subtitle translation.Therefore,the author hopes that subtitle translation could be paid more attention in terms of cross-cultural communication.

An Exemplification towards Subtitling Translation in Media Language Transfer——on the Movie"The Scientific Card player"

Bilingual subtitling is often employed as an economical and effective method in media language transfer. It could be regarded as a branch of translation and often employs translation theories and strategies when carrying out the blingual task. However, there are several other factors that from media industry and administration need to be combined with translation during the process of subtitling. This paper uses the Italian movie"The Scientific Card Player"as an example to give an analysis of several factors which are involved in movie subtitling, including the poly-semiotic nature of audiovisual material, movie censorship, subtitling and translating techniques and strategies.

Research on the “Equivalent Effect” of Subtitling Translation in Garfield Ⅱ

As a large number of foreign films have flooded into the Chinese film market, subtitling translation plays an important role in helping the audience understand and learn about some information and cultures from different countries. On the Humor Translation in Subtitling of American Sitcom

The subtitling translation in American sitcom is of great significance which helps Chinese audiences to understand programs.Humor element is an essential part of the sitcom.However,the loss of humor is very common in subtitling translation,so the vivid and accurate translation for humor in sitcoms has become a challenge for the translators.This thesis analyzes the definition of humor and the main features of subtitling translation,and then discusses several examples of humor loss in the subtitling translation of Friends to put forward corresponding strategies.

Language Transfer on Screen Subtitling in Slovenia： Tradition vs. Globalization

Subtitling has a very different role in countries with millions of people speaking their language and in small countries like Slovenia. Considering the fact that dubbing costs ten times as much as subtitling, Slovenia has traditionally turned to subtitling in order to present foreign TV and film production to the audiences. The development of subtitling after WWll can be divided into two periods： before and after 1990, for obvious reasons. During the first period that started in the 1950s, the stress was on quality all along, additionally spurned by the development of technology. TV Ljubljana with its group of pro fessional translators was the leading motor of progress in this field. The translators were all college-educated and willing to study new technologies that on the one hand made their work less time-consuming and on the other more prone to direct peer criticism. Computer technology, even though the beginnings now resemble the age of dinosaurs, made a big difference. The University of Ljubljana established a translation department that worked closely with the TV translation department, thus linking theory and practice in the best of possible ways. All the efforts were centred on quality. Democracy, however, gradually transferred the stress onto quantity. The newly-established commercial TV houses started lowering translation fees, encouraging competition not in quality but in lower prices. Globalization brought a few international subtitling firms on the Slovene market, causing a drastic drop in translation fees. The best translators /bund other job opportunities while subtitling done by non-expert translators and inexperienced students can most often be described as ＂anything goes＂. The trouble is that the number of subtitles that a TV viewer reads per year amounts to a book of approximately a thousand pages. That means that bad translations on TV screens influence the quality level of language among the users, especially among young viewers devoted to the consumption of fast food and fast culture. The increasingly popular permissive view of language use at our universities is causing a drop in language standards and norms. It is a vicious circle that will be difficult to break.

A Tentative Analysis on the Principles of Subtitling Translation

Thanks to rapidly development on information technologies and economy globalization, the international culture interactions through movies and TV sequels have changed audiences viewing experience greatly. Accompanying with the actors' and the actresses' own voices and natural breathing, the subtitled ones enable almost all the audiences to have a genuine, authentic movie time. Whereas the dubbed ones are comparatively costly and time consuming in the process of reproduction, it have gradually faded out from our sights. This thesis conducts a brief survey and a tentative analysis on the strategies of subtitling translation with the case study of the famous TV series Emma, which is recomposed from one of greatest British Romantic Author Jane Austin's masterpieces.

English to Chinese Subtitling: A Skopos based Commentary Domestication and Foreignization

Domestication and foreignization as translation strategies are used to achieve the purpose so as to fulfil the expectations and needs of target audience in target text. The research question is'how does skopos theory lead the text in choosing the translation strategies as domestication and foreignization?'In this essay the movie of Mulan was chosen and analyzed in terms of movie Titles, Names and Forms of Address, Proverbs and Idioms. The analysis of the translation shows how foreignization and domestication co-exist as co-strategies in order to convey the meaning clearer for the target audience.

A Brief Analysis of the Differences and Defects of Subtitling Compared to Dubbing——Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Compared to the dubbing, the version of subtitling has many defects, including the faults purely in language translation and the inaccuracy in the cultural images. As a media of cultural communication, the translator of the subtitling has to pay enough attention to the art of language, and has to take strategies centering on the audience, promoting the cultural communication and reducing the cultural differences.

Errors in the Subtitling of Discourse Markers From English Into Arabic

This study aims at investigating errors which occur in the subtitling of discourse markers from English into Arabic in the subtitles of two movies,Wonder and Seven.Specifically,this study investigates the subtitling of five discourse markers,namely,well,yeah,you know,so,and oh by two movie websites,Netflix and Egybest.The findings reveal that two major errors occurred in the subtitles of the two movies,which are omission and wrong equivalence.The findings also show that omission occurred more frequently than wrong equivalence when subtitling these five discourse markers from English into Arabic.

On Subtitling Translation from the Perspective of Skopostheorie--A Case Study of Pride and Prejudice

With globalization,cultural exchanges among various countries have become increasingly in-depth.As akind of art,films play an important part in cultural communication and exchanges,and because of the introduction of alarge number of foreign films and television shows,more and more audience need subtitle translations to help them un-derstand the plot and cultural connotation of those films.Skopostheorie focuses on the purpose of translation,which is basically consistent with the aim of subtitling translation in order to convey a more comprehensive cultural informationfor the audience with specific cultural background.Meanwhile this paper chooses the film Pride and Prejudice to ana-lyze the characteristics of subtitle translation from the perspective of Skopos theory and to summarize the particulartranslation skills or strategies from this movie.

Characteristics and C-E Translation Methods of the Four-Character Frame in the Subtitles of the Documentary Daming Palace

This paper studies the four-character frame in the subtitle of the documentary Daming Palace, aiming to provide a reference for the translation of the documentary four-character case as well as better spread Chinese culture. By analyzing, researching and summarizing the subtitle of Daming Palace and reading a lot of literature, the author has found that in Daming Palace the four-character frame is characterized by the use of the absolute four-character frames and the recurrence of some four-character frames, and that C-E translation methods of the four-character frame are mainly literal translation, free translation, provincial translation and concise translation.

Analysis of Domestication and Foreignization in Chinese-English Subtitle Translation——A Case Study of Hi,Mom

In recent years,with the booming development of the film industry,film subtitles play an increasingly important role in modern society.As one of the key links in cross-cultural communication,the quality of film subtitle translation affects the box office and viewing experience.Hi,Mom,a Chinese comedy based on the theme of mother’s love,which topped China’s box office during the Chinese New Year in 2021 and ascended to the third place in the global box office,high-quality subtitle translation is indispensable to its success.This paper discusses the subtitle translation of the film Hi,Mom based on the domestication and foreignization perspectives,so as to provide a reference for the Chinese-English translation of Chinese film.

从释意理论看电影《你好,李焕英》幽默元素字幕的翻译策略

字幕翻译是观众了解非母语影视的主要手段,优秀的字幕翻译也成为海外观众更好地了解中国电影和中国文化的重要途径。字幕翻译同口译不乏相通之处,因此源于口语实践研究、倡导脱离源语言外壳束缚的释意理论,不仅指出了译者在字幕翻译过程中应了解的原则和方向,也启发译者跳出具体翻译策略的限制,根据具体情况灵活采取合适的翻译策略,对于电影字幕翻译具有实际的指导意义。华语喜剧电影中的幽默元素体现了中国浓厚鲜明的民族文化特色,是译者较难处理的部分。电影《你好,李焕英》在翻译诸如双关语、特色方言、富有时代感的流行语和富含中国文化特色的话语这些包含幽默元素的字幕时采取了替换、归化、异化、减译等不同翻译策略。

The English Subtitle Translation of Quanzhou’s World Heritage Application Documentary: A Frame Theory Perspective

Based on Fillmore’s frame theory, this paper examines the translator’s cognitive frame operation in the English subtitle translation of Quanzhou’s World Heritage application documentary. It analyzes and discusses how the translator maximizes translation effect between the source language and the target language, so as to enhance the readability of documentary subtitles and promote the spread of traditional Chinese culture. The findings are as follows: Firstly, in the translation process, the frame operations used by the translator include frame correspondence, intra-frame operations, frame replacement, frame perspective shift and frame transplantation. Secondly, cultural documentaries are full of culture-loaded words, for which the translator usually uses frame transplantation. Thirdly, due to the instantaneous nature of subtitles, intra-frame operations and frame replacement are applied in terms of cultural background of the target language audience. Besides, in order to enhance the audience’s reading experience, there may be some changes of narrative perspective in the English translation of cultural documentaries.

文本属性对视频弹幕阅读体验影响研究

弹幕作为近年新型的信息呈现方式,拥有广泛的用户群体。本文通过行为实验研究弹幕的文本属性对视频弹幕阅读的影响,为弹幕设置的优化提供参考与指导,有助于提高弹幕视频用户体验。本研究结合客观行为实验与主观问卷方法,以字符大小、字符颜色为自变量,以被试的再认成绩和主观满意度为因变量,设计5(字符大小)×2(字符颜色)混合实验。在行为实验结束后采用李克特7点量表对被试的弹幕视频主观满意度进行量化,并对行为与问卷结果数值进行统计分析,考察字符大小与颜色对弹幕阅读体验的影响。研究发现,弹幕视频中字符大小、颜色对弹幕阅读信息加工效果影响显著,且与用户满意度一致;弹幕的字符尺寸占屏比(字符对角线/屏幕对角线)为1.55%时阅读体验最优,白色字幕优于彩色字幕。

多模态话语分析视域下外宣片字幕翻译研究——以中国文化传播外宣片为例

外宣片在塑造国家形象、传播国家传统文化方面发挥重要作用。外宣片字幕的翻译语言精练,以画面与声音诠释文字内容、同时照顾观者文化背景。本文以2022年和2023年发布的三则中国文化传播外宣片为例,用多模态话语分析理论框架分析外宣片字幕的翻译,结果发现,外宣片将文字、图觉、声觉相融合后,无注释的翻译方法是字幕翻译的典型特征。在文化层面,译者要关注观众的文化背景与差异;内容层面,需强调多模态相互呼应;语境层面,译文须与非语言要素所创设的语境、情境相契合;表达层面,多模态元素多层次进行转换,以符合观众的观看习惯。
