The outward student mobility has been recognized as an instrument for the internationalization of higher education(IHE)world-widely and in the UK.This paper intends to critically review the existing literature in order to identify the current trend and issues of the UK outward student mobility under the IHE.It points out that the focus of current international educational activities is attracting foreign/inward students out of the economic impetus in the UK.Consequently,the outward student mobility is given the less recognition than the inward one in the UK policy-making and researches,which could lead the imbalanced gains for UK-domiciled students.Thus,it suggests that both the UK government education sectors and institutions should more develop the outward student mobility;moreover,future researches could investigate more about outward students’personal development. 展开更多

This paper is based on a study of three Confucius Institutes in Canada.The research aims to explore the nature of operations at Confucius Institutes,ranging from the selection of partnering Chinese universities,to the program planning at each individual site.Specifically,it focuses on the perceived impacts of the Confucius Institute partnership on the Canadian hosting institutions.Data was collected through interviews with key administrative staff from three Canadian universities.The theoretical framework of constructivism from international relations theory and concepts drawn from the literature on the internationalization of higher education were used to analyze the findings.Key issues revealed from the data include the host’s perception of Confucius Institutes as China’s cultural diplomacy and soft power strategy,the progression of partnerships between Canada and China over time,and university autonomy. 展开更多

China’s reform and opening up policy has not only freed the country to become a global economic giant but also tuned its higher education in with international trends.This study examines how internationalization has impacted core university values and whether or not this newly globalized higher education will embrace diversity so that Chinese cultural and scholarly traditions are given space to develop.Adopting notions of diversity and“dialogue among civilizations”as the conceptual framework,this study finds that,rather than nurturing a genuine meaningful sense of intellectual openness and plurality,globalized higher education in China has tended to foster countervailing tendencies of conformity and homogeneity with Western models,and the historical dilemma of integrating Western perspectives with Chinese indigenous ideas is not yet being resolved. 展开更多

Chinese Faculty Members at Japanese Universities:Who Are They and Why Do They Work in Japan?

Purpose:The purpose of this study is to identify the key aspects of the demographic characteristics and motivations of Chinese faculty at Japanese universities.Design/Approach/Methods:Main methods include an analysis of relevant data from a national survey of full-time international faculty in Japan in 2017 and results from semi-structured interviews with several full-time Chinese faculty hired in different Japanese universities.Findings:This study suggests that,compared to the average level of international faculty,there are larger numbers of female Chinese faculty,greater numbers of Chinese professors,Chinese doctoral degree holders,Chinese faculty in engineering,and larger numbers of them being engaged in research rather than teaching.Further,this study argues that the most important reasons for Chinese faculty to work in Japanese universities are academic or professional reasons,followed by their fondness for Japanese life and culture and their agreement with better living conditions in Japan than in China.Originality/Value:It is the first time that the key characteristics of full-time Chinese faculty at Japanese universities and their motivations to come to Japan are investigated and discussed based on both quantitative and qualitative methods. 展开更多
