Decarbonization and decontamination of the iron and steel industry(ISI),which contributes up to 15%to anthropogenic CO_(2) emissions(or carbon emissions)and significant proportions of air and water pollutant emissions in China, are challenged by the huge demand for steel.Carbon and pollutants often share common emission sources, indicating that emission reduction could be achieved synergistically. Here,we explored the inherent potential of measures to adjust feedstock composition and technological structure and to control the size of the ISI to achieve carbon emission reduction(CER)and pollution emission reduction(PER).We investigated five typical pollutants in this study, namely, petroleum hydrocarbon pollutants and chemical oxygen demand in wastewater, particulate matter,SO_(2),and NO_(x) in off gases, and examined synergies between CER and PER by employing cross elasticity for the period between 2022 and 2035.The results suggest that a reduction of 8.7%-11.7%in carbon emissions and 20%-31%in pollution emissions(except for particulate matter emissions)could be achieved by 2025 under a high steel scrap ratio(SSR)scenario. Here, the SSR and electric arc furnace(EAF)ratio serve critical roles in enhancing synergies between CER and PER(which vary with the type of pollutant). However, subject to a limited volume of steel scrap,a focused increase in the EAF ratio with neglection of the available supply of steel scrap to EAF facilities would lead to an increase carbon and pollution emissions.Although CER can be achieved through SSR and EAF ratio optimization, only when the crude steel production growth rate remains below 2.2%can these optimization measures maintain the emissions in 2030 at a similar level to that in 2021.Therefore,the synergistic effects between PER and CER should be considered when formulating a development route for the ISI in the future. 展开更多

Bearings are the most important component of nearly all mechanical equipment, as they guarantee the steady running of the equipment, which is especially important for high-end equipment such as highspeed trains and shield tunneling machines. Requirements regarding the quality of bearings are increasing with the rapid development in technology. A country’s bearings manufacturing level directly reflects the level of that country’s steel metallurgy and machinery manufacturing. The performance of the bearing steel is the critical factor that determines the quality of a bearing. The development of new bearing steel with higher performance is the ambition of material researchers and the expectation of the manufacturing industry. Many famous bearing manufacturing enterprises are competing to develop the new generation of bearing steel. Nanostructured bainitic bearing steel (NBBS), which is a newly developed bearing steel, not only possesses high strength and toughness, but also exhibits excellent wear resistance and rolling contact fatigue (RCF) resistance. In recent years, relevant achievements in NBBS in China have led to significant progress in this field. NBBS was first used in China to manufacture large bearings for wind turbines and heavy-duty bearings, with excellent performance. As a result, NBBS and its corresponding heat-treatment process have been included in the national and industry standards for the first time. The bearing industry considers the exploitation of NBBS to be epoch-making, and has termed this kind of bearing as the second generation of bainitic bearing. In this paper, the development of NBBS is reviewed in detail, including its advantages and disadvantages. Further research directions for NBBS are also proposed. 展开更多

This study reviews the development of Baosteel' s pipeline steel over the last 20 years. Energy demand accelerates the development of high-grade pipeline steel as well as modem petroleum and natural gas pipeline construction. Pipeline steel is a kind of typical modem microalloyed steel produced via thermo-mechanical controlled processing. The development process of pipeline steel at Baosteel represents the course of the technological progress of pipeline steel in China. In the last two decades, Baosteel' s pipeline steel has been developed from a single product of hot- rolled strips to a variety of products including hot-rolled strips, heavy plates, high-frequency electric resistance welded (HFW) pipes and U-ing-O-ing-Expanding (UOE) welded pipes. Moreover, the proportion of the HFW and the UOE welded pipes has been increasing year by year. UOE longitudinal submerged arc welding (SAW) pipes have become the leading product of strategic significance in Baosteel' s pipeline steel family. Over the last 20 years, Baosteel' s pipeline steel products have shifted from "ferrite + pearlite" X52 to "acicular ferrite" XT0 and X80, and Baosteel has developed hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) resistant pipeline steel. Baosteel' s pipeline steel products have been applied in variety of geographical areas, including deserts, Gobi, mountains, plains as well as the ocean. And both the X100 and the X120 ultra high strength pipeline steels have been produced on a trial basis. Baosteel has accumulatively produced 6.5 Mt of pipeline steel for both domestic and overseas projects. Baosteel will continue strengthening its strategic cooperation with oil companies, and conducting research on ultra high strength pipeline steel, pipeline steel for strain-based design and submarine pipeline steel, etc. , so as to meet the need of construction in the future. 展开更多

The development, production and application of top high-grade non-grain-oriented (NGO) silicon steels at Baosteel were introduced in this paper. Top high grades refer to the highest grades in the intemational silicon steel product standard and above. B35A230 and B50A250 were developed at Baosteel in 2009 and have been used in inverter compressors for air-conditioners, small transformers and big hydropower generators in the Three Gorges project. Small- batch production of B35A210 and B50A230, which exceed the highest grades listed in the intemational silicon steel product standard, began in 2010. That was a breakthrough in the silicon steel making history in China. Presently,Baosteel' s high- grade NGO products have passed the strict qualifications of the three major electric power equipment manufacturers in China and the leading international power equipment suppliers like ALSTOM, GE, SIEMENS, VESTAS, etc. These products are characterized by low iron loss, low anisotropy, good punchability and a high lamination factor. They have been used in the 770 MW hydropower generator at Xiluodu Power Station in the three gorges area, 1 000 MW thermal power generators and 2.5 MW wind power generators. 展开更多

Uganda aspires to exploit its abundant iron ore resources to supply the required raw material for developing its iron and steel industry across all the phases of the value chain. The country imports USD 369 million worth of iron and steel products annually, 60% of which are raw materials for the steel processing plants. The National Planning Authority, the government planning agency, undertook a study to assess the possibility of using the iron ore deposits available in the country, as a source of supply for iron and steel production. In the study, available geological literature was collected from various sources and analysed in order to understand the mode of iron ore mineralization in Uganda, particularly, that in the South West. A field excursion to the deposits was conducted in order to ground truth the information obtained from literature research;carry out a detailed reconnaissance study so as to benchmark the likely scenarios required in the development of the iron and steel value chain;and establish the likely mining and processing requirements of the deposits. The reconnaissance survey confirmed the existence of hematite deposits that visually show characteristics of high-quality iron ore (55% - 68% Fe) suitable for iron production. From surficial investigations, the deposits are mainly comprised of thin beds of mineralisation. The deposits occur in the form of massive hematite, which is amenable to mining and direct feed to the ore processing plants, and specularite hematite (a metamorphic platy variety), which normally requires mineral processing for amenability to reduction processes. From the analysis, the country has sufficient deposits of a high grade that can support a steel industry, though more detailed quantifications and characterisations need to be prioritised by the government. 展开更多

A review is given concerning some of the recent industrial developments of stainless steels. In austenitic stainless steels, two different directions of alloy development are noticeable:low nickel austenitic stainless steels and high nitrogen stainless steels. In these two cases the aims are different, particularly in terms of strength, but the philosophy of alloy development and the scientific approaches are very similar and they all revolve about the role of nitrogen as an alloying element and how this affects strength, ductility and corrosion resistance. There is now a broad and useful basis of information as to how nitrogen affects solid solution hardening, grain boundary hardening and work hardening and how to make use of these effects in developing materials required by the world market. In the field of corrosion resistance, ferritic, duplex and austenitic stainless steels compete with each other and now there is a growing body of information concerning the relative corrosion resistance based on laboratory data. However, for practical applications and for alloy selection, more than just laboratory data are needed, and thus, the first results are presented here of a many years comparison of the corrosion resistance of 24 commercial stainless steels exposed to corrosion in outdoors marine atmosphere.Hope is expressed to involve in the near future even more steels from a wider range of manufacturers in such corrosion studies. This might help consumers in appropriate alloy selection. It might also help steel makers in developing appropriate stainless steel grades. 展开更多

Effect of holding time on microstructural developments and transformation of precipitates formed at the interface during transient liquid-phase bonding of a duplex stainless steel using a Ni-based amorphous insert alloy was studied. The experimental results reveal that the microstructure of the adjacent base metal varies clearly as a function of holding time. The migration of Cr and Ni elements and the → transformation seem to play relevant roles in this microstructure evolution. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron prob X-ray microanalysis (EPMA) results indicate the transformation of BN→BN and (N, Mo) boride→BN at the interface with the holding time of 60-1 800 s. N content changes with holding time increasing at locations at the interface might be a controlling factor contributing to this transformation. 展开更多
