Experiments on rock joint behaviors have shown that joint surface roughness is mobilized under shearing, inducing dilation and resulting in nonlinear joint shear strength and shear stress vs.shear displacement behaviors. The Barton-Bandis(B-B) joint model provides the most realistic prediction for the nonlinear shear behavior of rock joints. The B-B model accounts for asperity roughness and strength through the joint roughness coefficient(JRC) and joint wall compressive strength(JCS) parameters.Nevertheless, many computer codes for rock engineering analysis still use the constant shear strength parameters from the linear Mohr-Coulomb(M-C) model, which is only appropriate for smooth and non-dilatant joints. This limitation prevents fractured rock models from capturing the nonlinearity of joint shear behavior. To bridge the B-B and the M C models, this paper aims to provide a linearized implementation of the B-B model using a tangential technique to obtain the equivalent M-C parameters that can satisfy the nonlinear shear behavior of rock joints. These equivalent parameters, namely the equivalent peak cohesion, friction angle, and dilation angle, are then converted into their mobilized forms to account for the mobilization and degradation of JRC under shearing. The conversion is done by expressing JRC in the equivalent peak parameters as functions of joint shear displacement using proposed hyperbolic and logarithmic functions at the pre-and post-peak regions of shear displacement, respectively.Likewise, the pre-and post-peak joint shear stiffnesses are derived so that a complete shear stress-shear displacement relationship can be established.Verifications of the linearized implementation of the B-B model show that the shear stress-shear displacement curves, the dilation behavior, and the shear strength envelopes of rock joints are consistent with available experimental and numerical results. 展开更多

Although many intact rock types can be very strong,a critical confining pressure can eventually be reached in triaxial testing, such that the Mohr shear strength envelope becomes horizontal. This critical state has recently been better defined, and correct curvature or correct deviation from linear Mohr-Coulomb(MC) has finally been found.Standard shear testing procedures for rock joints, using multiple testing of the same sample,in case of insufficient samples, can be shown to exaggerate apparent cohesion.Even rough joints do not have any cohesion, but instead have very high friction angles at low stress, due to strong dilation.Rock masses, implying problems of large-scale interaction with engineering structures, may have both cohesive and frictional strength components. However,it is not correct to add these, following linear M-C or nonlinear Hoek-Brown(H-B) standard routines.Cohesion is broken at small strain, while friction is mobilized at larger strain and remains to the end of the shear deformation. The criterion 'c then σn tan φ' should replace 'c plus σn tan φ' for improved fit to reality.Transformation of principal stresses to a shear plane seems to ignore mobilized dilation, and caused great experimental difficulties until understood. There seems to be plenty of room for continued research,so that errors of judgement of the last 50 years can be corrected. 展开更多

As viewed from space remote-sensing images (e.g. Google Earth images) of South Guizhou and North Guangxi, the authors found that macroscopic karst landscape on the Earth's surface is strongly controlled by the Conjugated shear joint of "X" type. Joints of this kind constitute a huge infiltration network and act as channel-ways for the permeation of meteoric waters from the surface, thus, leading to the dissolution of carbonate rocks nearby. As a result, the karst landscape is formed, which is dominated by linear karst valleys. An "X" karst valley network structure appears in the area where horizontal strata are distributed, and a feather-like network structure appears in the area where vertical strata are distributed, respectively. When the water permeates downwards to the underground-water level, it will flow horizontally along the strike of "X" joints toward the local base level of erosion to form an "X" network system of underground conduits in the area where horizontal strata are distributed, but it is relatively complex, because of the joining of other joints. This is the first time we have made use of Google Earth images to study the karst environment. Therefore, it has been successful in research on the Earth's geomorphology, which could only rely on aerial photos and satellite photos in the past. Google Earth images provide low-cost and applicable imaging materials for the study of Earth's geomorphology and karst rocky desertification and its control. 展开更多

Based on the study of folds and related conjugate shear joints, the tectonic stress fields of the Urumqi-Usu region to the north of the North Tianshan Mountains have been reconstructed. Furthermore the author discussed the tectonic movements and their dynamic features. The early tectonic movement in the investigated region occurred from the end of the Late Jurassic to the initial stage of the Early Cretaceous, with the maximum (tensile) and minimum (compressional) principal stress trajectories in the tectonic stress field being in E-W and S-N directions respectively; the late tectogenesis took place from the end of the Early Pleistocene to the initial Middle Pleistocene, with the maximum and minimum principal stress trajectories in the late stress field striking in WNW and NE-NNE directions respectively. Through computer-aided simulated calculation by the finite element method and analysis of geological structure, it has been ascertained that the early tectogenesis is a nearly N-S compressive movement and the late one a NE to nearly N-S compressive movement with reverse shear. The dynamic force which caused the tectogeneses came from the movement of the southern major fault, i.e. the North Tianshan Mountains. 展开更多

To explain the effect of joint roughness on joint peak shear strength(JPSS)and investigate the effect of different contact states of joint surface on JPSS,we try to clarify the physical mechanism of the effect of joint cavity percentage(JCP)on JPSS from the perspective of the three-dimensional(3D)distribution characteristics of the actual contact joint surface, and propose a JPSS model considering the JCP.Shear tests for red sandstone joints with three different surface morphologies and three different JCPs were performed under constant normal load condition.Based on test fitting results, the reduction effect of the JCP on JPSS is investigated, and a JPSS model for cavity-containing joints is obtained. However, the above model only considers the influence of JCP by fitting test data, and does not reveal the physical mechanism of JCP affecting the JPSS.Based on the peak dilation angle model for consideration of the actual contact joint morphology, and the influence of JCP on the roughness of the actual contact joint surface,a theoretical model of the JPSS considering the JCP is proposed. The derivation process does not depend on the test fitting, but is entirely based on the joint mechanical law,and its physical significance is clear. It is proposed that the essence of the influence of the JCP on JPSS is that the JCP first affects the normal stress of the actual contact joints, further affects the roughness of actual contact joints, and then affects the shear strength. 展开更多

In order to study the reliability of the empirical estimation of joint shear strength by the JRC(joint roughness coefficient)-JCS(joint compressive strength) model, natural rock joints of dif-ferent lithologic characteristics and different sizes were selected as samples, and their shear strengths under dry and saturated conditions were measured by direct shear test and compared to those esti-mated by the JRC-JCS model.Comparison results show that for natural rock joints with joint surfaces closely matched, the average relative error of joint shear strength between empirical estimation and direct shear test is 9.9%;the reliability of the empirical estimation of joint shear strength by the JRC-JCS model is good under both dry and saturated conditions if the JRC is determined accounting for directional statistical measurements, scale effect and surface smoothing during shearing. However, for natural rock joints with joint surfaces mismatched, the average relative error of joint shear strength between empirical estimation and direct shear test is 39.9%;the reliability of empirical estimation of joint shear strength by the JRC-JCS model is questionable under both dry and saturated conditions. 展开更多

With the use of Ti/Ni/Cu/Ni multiple foils as interlayer,carbon/carbon(C/C) composite was bonded to Nibased superalloy GH3044 by partial transient liquid-phase bonding technique. The effect of bonding temperature on the microstructures and strengths of the joints was investigated. The results showed that gradient structural multiple interlayers composed of ‘‘C–Ti reaction layer/Ti–Ni intermetallic compound layer/Ni–Cu sosoloid/residual Cu layer/Ni-GH3044 diffusion layer'' were formed between C/C composite and GH3044.The shear strength of the C/C composite/GH3044 joint reached the highest value of 26.1 MPa when the bonding temperature was 1,030 °C.In addition, the fracture morphology showed that the fracture mode changed with the increase of bonding temperature. 展开更多
