Maya Angelou(1928-2014)is a celebrated African American woman writer. She's not only an autobiographer,a poet,an educator, but also a politician,an actress and a director. Her first autobiographical novel I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is a significant milestone of the African American literature of woman. The novel depicts Marguerite life experience from the age of 3 to the age of17,recording how she breaks through the bondage of racial discrimination and sex prejudice, and realizes self-consciousness.From the perspective of post-colonist criticism and feminism, this thesis analyses how the protagonist suffered from the"othering"under the colonial discourse and patriarchal ideology and how she got out of the bondage and reconstruct her identity. Finally,it is concluded that only if the black women break through the cage of race and gender, accept and reconstruct their identities, can they gain the real emancipation and respect. 展开更多

Frequently used in both spoken and written language, you know, after a series of grammaticalizations, eventually evolves into a discourse marker which reflects speakers’ metapragmatic awareness to different degrees and performs different metapragmatic functions. Based on the COCA, this paper analyses the metapragmatic functions of the discourse marker you know according to Verschueren’s theory of Metapragmatic Awareness and the Relevance Theory proposed by Sperber and Wilson. It is found that you know has six metapragmatic functions: highlighting the information, giving further explanation, regulating turns in conversation, providing examples, making suggestions and maintaining relationships. By exploring the metapragmatic functions of you know, the relationship between you know and the metapragmatic awareness of language users is further revealed.

Encounters are celebrated experiences between persons with connectedness in human situations as expectation. While being in a human dynamic and rhythmic interaction, nursing encounters are dyadic relationships illuminated as patterns of an interconnected relationship moving between the nurse and the nursed, and reflecting person-and-otherness events. The purpose of this paper is to describe the theory of Encountering Nursing in a Nurse-Nursed Dyadic Relationship (ThENNDyR) and to illuminate the four nursing practice processes on which the theory is founded: Knowing as appreciating relational moments;Reflecting as engaging moments;Realizing as patterns of living moments;and Transcending as celebrating moments. Nursing practice occurs in moments in which dyadic relationships transpire as nursing encounters. As fleeting as moments are, the four processes of nursing simultaneously take place as understanding conditions that the who and what of the person warrants persons. “Encountering nursing” is a momentary co-existence of persons in a person-and-otherness situation communicating connectedness-interconnectedness in distinct patterning. Interactions in nursing exist as persons remain wholes and complete in the moment. 展开更多

This essay offers a philosophical perspective that, in breaking with both the open and surreptitious dialectical method still so prominent in academic discourse, follows Heidegger in trying to conceive of a radically non-dialectical manner of approaching affirmation, negation, and neutrality. As with Heidegger, this is attempted through a turn towards art and the "emancipated contingency" that characterizes much creative production. In contrast to action and production within the knowledge economy, the creation of the artwork concerns a knowing of unknowingness (described by Maurice Blanchot as the neutral) that demands a rethink of action in relation to truth and errancy. Indeed, the very working of the work of art is conceived here as a truth that is precisely "set to work" (Heidegger) by errancy. Through a consideration of the essential difference between choice and decision and the different "beginning" of art that this suggests, the essay concludes with some reflections of the theme of art's fascination and the and the affirmation of the unknown. 展开更多
