On the Creation Background and the Influence of Wei Zhuang’s Famous Poem:Lament of a Northwestern Woman

Lament of a Northwestern Woman(Qin Fu Yin),composed by Wei Zhuang after the Huangchao uprising,is a long poem that showcases the sufferings of the civilians and embodies the people’s character of the poem,which is the profound empathy and compassion of the poet towards the civilians’plight.The poem was written during the reign of Emperor Xizong of the Tang Dynasty in the year Gengmao(883 AD).2023 is also the year Gengmao,so this poem has existed for a remarkable 1140 years.For over a millennium,this long poem remained submerged in history until the opening of the Dunhuang Grottoes at the turn of the 20th century.The deep compassion and commiseration towards the underprivileged masses conveyed in this long poem are reminiscent of Du Fu’s renowned“Three Poems of Separation.”Moreover,it is widely believed that this poem foretells the decline of the Tang Dynasty.

Chinese poetry has exerted a great influence on American modernist poets,especially on William Carlos Williams(1883-1963).William Carlos Williams’The Widow’s Lament in Springtime shares some connections with Chinese Boudoir poems in theme,image,and technique.This paper tends to discuss the influence of Chinese Boudoir poems on William Carlos Williams based on his creating of The Widow’s Lament in Springtime,which provides a new perspective for studying the communication of Chinese and American poetry.

Giovanni Battista Naldini's Pietà:Humility and Love

In 1564,in honor of the death of Michelangelo Buonarroti(1475-1564),an artistic extravaganza was invented by the Benedictine monk Vincenzo Borghini(1515-1580)-prior of the hospital of the innocents,humanist,and administrator of the Florentine Academy of Design(Accademia del Disegno or Florentine Academy)-and was implemented by Giorgio Vasari(1511-1574)-artist,writer,and artistic director of the Academy,who engaged his Florentine assistants to work on the execution of the tomb in the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence(see Figure 1).The commission of Michelangelo’s tomb was prompted by his nephew,Lionardo[Leonardo]Simoni-Buonarroti(1522-1599),and the Grand Duke of Tuscany,Cosimo I de’Medici(1519-1574).The tomb was completed in 1578.Vasari designed the architectural monument,and his assistants,members of the Florentine Academy,collaborated in the following manner:The sculptures of the Fine Arts were carved by Giovanni Bandini(1540-1599),who represented the personification of architecture;Valerio di Simone Cioli(1529-1599),who represented the personification of Sculpture;and Battista Lorenzi(1527-1594),who represented the personification of Painting and the portrait bust of Michelangelo.Giovanni Battista Naldini(1537-1591)completed al fresco the burning urns,the purple-colored doorway of the tomb,the suspended canopy,and the Pietàin the center of the marble tabernacle.This latter artistic contribution is the topic of this essay.

Emily Dickinson in the Context of "Boudoir Lament"

"Boudoir Lament" is regarded as a distinctive subgenre of classical Chinese poetry.This essay argues that some of Dickinson's poems are replete with the sensibility characteristic of "Boudoir Lament" poetry.The "Boudoir Lament" resonance of her poetry,along with her seclusion and love story,activate Chinese readers' cultural memory to re-imagine her and re-mold her image with the Chinese flavor.Rewriting Dickinson in the way of "Boudoir Lament" is interwoven with the contemporary reconfirmation and reexamination of this emotional pattern.

The Translation and Analysis of《甲午初春感赋》

This poem is written by Wan Aizhen in 2014 to remark the 120 th anniversary of the First Sino-Japanese War. The poet pursued her doctorate in Indiana University and is teaching Chinese in Purdue University. In the first half of this poem, the poet gives a brief introduction to the background and the changing circumstance of the war and expresses her resentment towards it. At that memorable time, a Chinese-American poet writing this patriotic poem is very meaningful. This poem, which has not been translated before, contains many traditional Chinese images. In order to make the translation concise and readable, the translator adopts both foreignizing and domesticating methods, and strives to help foreign readers understand the literary images in the original poem as well as the poet's sentiments.

The Rites of Mourning in Archaic and Classical Greece and in Pre-Qin China

This article attempts to compare the mourning of the dead before burial in Archaic and Classical Greece with that in Pre-Qin China. It focuses on three main subjects of mourning before burial--lamentation, mourners＇ gestures and behaviors, and mourning apparel--to demonstrate the cultural function and social influence of the mourning rituals through the analysis of the function and purpose of the mourning of two ancient peoples. We find that there are some differences in these two ancient societies, although the rites of mourning share some basic and similar procedures and functions.
