The study of language and gender,especially the study of gender language differences involves many fields such as psychology,sociology,anthropology,language and literature,news media,education,and so on.Starting from the broad definition of gender language,this paper composes and reviews the research history of domestic gender language and its differences.Around the research history of domestic gender language,the research period is divided according to the timeline into germination,genesis,and growth.Divided by theme and content,the main content is the phenomenon of sexism in language;the second is the study of gender language style differences;the third is the root causes of sexism and verbal gender differences,i.e.,the construction of the corresponding theories;and the fourth is the discussion of the limitations of the study of gender language in foreign countries. 展开更多

In order to analyze the differences of male and female people's language in vocabulary and styles, two corpora have been built: o... Men and women are different from each other in many aspects, including in language. In order to analyze the differences of male and female people's language in vocabulary and styles, two corpora have been built: one is the female main characters' lines of some episodes of Friends; and the other is the male main characters'. Taking Brown corpus as the reference corpus, a list of keywords for the two corpora, as well as frequencies of words, have been worked out respectively, by applying AntConc. Concordances and contexts also have been analyzed. The findings show that women use more interjection and hedges than men. What's more, women tend to be more cooperative than men in conversations. Additionally, women's words are less decisive when com-pared to men's. The results of this paper could give some suggestions in cross gender conversation so as to gain more effective communication. 展开更多

Using Conversation Analysis to Study Gender:An alternative to the ‘gender-differences’ paradigm 被引量:1

Research on gender and language has typically been underpinned by the premise that women and men are essentially different,and that these differences are evident in how they talk.In this paper,I introduce—and argue in favour of—the conversation analytic(CA)approach to gender as an alternative to a gender-differences paradigm.I describe what I take to be the three main challenges that conversation analysts have levied against such an approach,which I summarise as:a question of evidence,a question of relevance,and a question of existence(or ontology).I then describe,and critically evaluate,the classic solution to these questions that conversation analysts have proposed:a focus on‘participant orientations’to gender.I suggest that—in addition to correcting some of the mistaken analyses of interactional phenomena evident in gender-differences research—CA can inspire new ways of thinking about old research questions.I also propose that the question of what counts as an orientation to gender and,relatedly,how best to analyse the taken-for-granted social world,provide particularly fruitful areas for future research.I conclude by calling on researchers and students of gender to avoid using the assumption of essential difference as the starting point for academic endeavour. 展开更多

Relationship Between English Learning Strategies and Learning Style Preferences: An Empirical Study

In recent years, research emphasis in the field of SLA (second language acquisition) has shifted to the study of the learning process and behaviors of learners than that of teachers. Researches concerning the learners' language learning strategies and learning styles have been conducted in different cultural backgrounds. However, comparatively speaking, there are few studies focusing on the relationship between language learning strategies and learning style preferences in English learning among Chinese students. This paper elaborates on the research questions and hypotheses according to the English Learning Questionnaire, which consists primarily of SILL (Strategy Inventory for Language Learning) (Oxford, 1990) and PLSP (Perceptual Learning Style Preference) Survey (Reid, 1987) to identify their English learning strategy uses and learning style preferences. Then, with statistical analysis (by SPSS (Statistical Product and Service Solutions)) of the results of the questionnaire, discussions are made on the correlation between learning strategies, learning style preferences, and their gender differences, followed by pedagogical implications for English teaching and learning in the university settings in China. 展开更多
