A distance learning Continuing Medical Education (CME) project based on live interactive presentations and a group participatory model demonstrated that important strides can be made in the quality of CME available to health care professionals in African rural settings. Implementers choose a communication model consistent with the fundamental orality of Kenyan and other sub-Saharan African countries. The project involved four hospitals and one training institution in rural Kenya. The testing of learners and focus group discussions with learners, facilitators and presenters indicated that the project's methodologies, that strove to be culturally and work place friendly, contributed to gains in knowledge, competencies including case management, the continuity of patient care, team work, staff morale and other issues of expressed importance to the hospital healthcare work force and hospital administrators. The learning system, known as Advancing Continuing Medical Education through Information Technology (ACME-IT), was implemented by the Kenyan Ministry of Medical Services, EC Associates and the US-funded Aphia2 Western initiative implemented by PATH. The findings of this pilot suggests that the ACME-IT methodology that set up learning centers at the participating institutions is a promising viable alternative to the traditional and relatively expensive workshop training that characterizes much of CME in lower and middle income countries. 展开更多

BACKGROUND: The inclusion of cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR) in formal education has been a useful approach to providing basic life support(BLS) services. However, because not all students have been able to learn directly from certified instructors, we studied the educational efficacy of the use of peer-assisted learning(PAL) to train high-school students to perform BLS services.METHODS: This study consisted of 187 high-school students: 68 participants served as a control group and received a 1-hour BLS training from a school nurse, and 119 were included in a PAL group and received a 1-hour CPR training from a PAL leader. Participants' BLS training was preceded by the completion of questionnaires regarding their background. Three months after the training, the participants were asked to respond to questionnaires about their willingness to perform CPR on bystander CPR and their retention of knowledge of BLS.RESULTS: We found no statistically significant difference between the control and PAL groups in their willingness to perform CPR on bystanders(control: 55.2%, PAL: 64.7%, P=0.202). The PAL group was not significantly different from the control group(control: 60.78±39.77, PAL: 61.76±17.80, P=0.848) in retention of knowledge about BLS services.CONCLUSION: In educating high school students about BLS, there was no significant difference between PAL and traditional education in increasing the willingness to provide CPR to bystanders or the ability to retain knowledge about BLS. 展开更多

The stochastic simulation algorithm (SSA) accurately depicts spatially homogeneous wellstirred chemically reacting systems with small populations of chemical species and properly represents noise, but it is often abandoned when modeling larger systems because of its computational complexity. In this work, a twin support vector regression based stochastic simulations algorithm (TS^3A) is proposed by combining the twin support vector regression and SSA, the former is a well-known robust regression method in machine learning. Numerical results indicate that this proposed algorithm can be applied to a wide range of chemically reacting systems and obtain significant improvements on efficiency and accuracy with fewer simulating runs over the existing methods. 展开更多

Education is the base of the survival and growth of any state,but due to resource scarcity,students,particularly at the university level,are forced into a difficult situation.Scholarships are the most significant financial aid mechanisms developed to overcome such obstacles and assist the students in continuing with their higher studies.In this study,the convoluted situation of scholarship eligibility criteria,including parental income,responsibilities,and academic achievements,is addressed.In an attempt to maximize the scholarship selection process,numerous machine learning algorithms,including Support Vector Machines,Neural Networks,K-Nearest Neighbors,and the C4.5 algorithm,were applied.The C4.5 algorithm,owing to its efficiency in the prediction of scholarship beneficiaries based on extraneous factors,was capable of predicting a phenomenal 95.62%of predictions using extensive data of a well-esteemed government sector university from Pakistan.This percentage is 4%and 15%better than the remainder of the methods tested,and it depicts the extent of the potential for the technique to enhance the scholarship selection process.The Decision Support Systems(DSS)would not only save the administrative cost but would also create a fair and transparent process in place.In a world where accessibility to education is the key,this research provides data-oriented consolidation to ensure that deserving students are helped and allowed to get the financial assistance that they need to reach higher studies and bridge the gap between the demands of the day and the institutions of intellect. 展开更多

Supportive learning plays a substantial role in providing a quality edu-cation system.The evaluation of students’performance impacts their deeper insight into the subject knowledge.Specifically,it is essential to maintain the baseline foundation for building a broader understanding of their careers.This research concentrates on establishing the students’knowledge relationship even in reduced samples.Here,Synthetic Minority Oversampling TEchnique(SMOTE)technique is used for pre-processing the missing value in the provided input dataset to enhance the prediction accuracy.When the initial processing is not done substantially,it leads to misleading prediction accuracy.This research concentrates on modelling an efficient classifier model to predict students’perfor-mance.Generally,the online available student dataset comprises a lesser amount of sample,and k-fold cross-validation is performed to balance the dataset.Then,the relationship among the students’performance(features)is measured using the auto-encoder.The stacked Long Short Term Memory(s-LSTM)is used to learn the previous feedback connection.The stacked model handles the provided data and the data sequence for understanding the long-term dependencies.The simula-tion is done in the MATLAB 2020a environment,and the proposed model shows a better trade-off than the existing approaches.Some evaluation metrics like pre-diction accuracy,sensitivity,specificity,AUROC,F1-score and recall are evalu-ated using the proposed model.The performance of the s?LSTM model is compared with existing approaches.The proposed model gives 89% accuracy,83% precision,86%recall,and 87%F-score.The proposed model outperforms the existing systems in terms of the earlier metrics. 展开更多

With the advent of cloud computing technology, the development of mobile applications for use in several facets of life has been on the increase. This has been supported by the proliferation of mobile devices in the society which is also being used in utilizing the prowess of the cloud technology. Building a mobile education system that is platform independent is a major challenge since most of the popularly used ones are either software dependent or hardware dependent. In this work, a framework for mobile education system that is cross platform in nature with regard to operating system, hardware and web browsers using the 3-tier Client/Server mobile application architecture built on web standard was developed and fully tested. A first year computer science course offered by more than 1000 students was used as input to validate the framework. An integration of Short Message Services (SMS), virtual classroom and e-assessment components enable students and lecturers to communicate, create discussion forum and carry out e-testing using their mobile devices. This work is strongly recommended for higher institutions in Nigeria that need to explore the use of mobile devices that are available with the majority of students. Only registered users can access the developed app via the use of handheld devices (smart-phones & tablets). This can actually improve learning, research and collaboration between students and lecturers thereby enhancing learning experience. 展开更多

Distance education in nursing curricula is increasing. Academic nurse leaders must demonstrate the effectiveness of distance learning. This study is unique in that two cohorts, distance learners and campus learners, were taught synchronously by the same faculty member. Quantitative measures of student learning outcomes were compared using SPSS. There were no significant differences in learning outcomes between distance learners and campus learners. This study provides empiric support for distance education as a means to address the nursing shortage. 展开更多

By formulating the metric learning problem with relative distance constraints, we suggest a Relative Distance Constrained Metric Learning (RDCML) model which can be easily implemented and effectively solved by a modified support vector machine (SVM) approach. Experimental results on UCI datasets and handwritten digits datasets show that RDCML achieves better or comparable classification accuracy when compared with the state-of-the-art metric learning methods. 展开更多
