With the deployment of Connected and Automated Vehicles in the coming decades, road transportation will experience a significant upheaval.CAVs(Connected and Autonomous Vehicles)have been a main emphasis of Transportation and the automotive sector, and the future of transportation system analysis is widely anticipated. The examination and future development of CAVs technology has been the subject of numerous researches. However,as three essential kinds of road users, pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists have experienced little to no handling. We explored the influence of CAVs on non-motorized mobility in this article and seven various issues that CAVs face in the environment. 展开更多

Hanoi’s rapid urbanization has led to a surge in private vehicle ownership, particularly motorcycles, amidst inadequate public transportation infrastructure. Despite government efforts, many still prefer motorized transport, citing mobility and safety concerns, exacerbated by insufficient pedestrian infrastructure. This study examines the motivations behind this reliance on motorized vehicles, particularly motorcycles, in Hanoi. Findings reveal safety and convenience as primary factors driving motorized transport use, especially for accessing bus stations. Economic incentives could promote non-motorized travel and public transport adoption. Policy implications highlight the importance of addressing economic factors and improving access infrastructure to manage motorized vehicle reliance and foster sustainable urban mobility in Hanoi. 展开更多

Based on the symmetric two-lane Nagel–Schreckenberg(STNS) model, a three-lane cellular automaton model between two intersections containing a bus stop with left-turning buses is established in which model the occurrences of vehicle accidents are taken into account. The characteristics of traffic flows with different ratios of left-turn lines are discussed via the simulation experiments. The results indicate that the left-turn lines have more negative effects on capacity, accident rate as well as delay if the stop is located close to the intersections, where the negative effect in a near-side stop is more severe than that in a far-side one. The range of appropriate position for a bus stop without the bottleneck effect becomes more and more narrow with the increase of the ratio of left-turn bus lines. When the inflow is small, a short signal cycle and a reasonable offset are beneficial. When the inflow reaches or exceeds the capacity, a longer signal cycle is helpful. But if the stop position is inappropriate, the increase of cycle fails in reducing the negative effect of left-turning buses and the effectiveness of offset is weakened. 展开更多

In order to restrict non-yielding maneuvers of left-turning vehicles,an optimal design of left-lane line extensions is proposed to solve the problem.A field observation was conducted to collect a data set of left-turning vehicles at the beginning of a green phase at two similar intersections(one with a permitted phase and the other with a protected phase). The comparative analysis shows no significant difference in the speed distribution using either a permitted phase or a protected phase, but it reveals that a permitted phase can lead to a larger acceleration when the left-turn vehicles pass through the conflict points. Those indicate the existence of non-yielding maneuvers of left-turn vehicles at signalized intersections with a permitted phase.Optimal designed left-lane line extensions contain two types of segments, circular curves and transition curves, and they are only related to four geometry parameters of an intersection. The proposed method is easy to use and it can offer reference for intersection channelization and traffic organization. 展开更多

The high risk of injury resulting from non-motorized vehicle(NMV)crashes has created the goal of using the 3E strategy to comprehensively improve NMV safety.Traditional safety improvement methods identify hot zones generally by crash frequency or density, which is effective for roadway engineering improvements but neglects characteristics related to other improvements such as safety education. As safety education would be more effective if targeted at the residences of crash-involved road users, the traditional approach to hot zones may therefore provide biased results for such alternative countermeasures. After confirming that 77.17%of NMV crashes occurred outside the involved riders’areas of residence, this study compared the differences between the locations of crashes and the residences of NMV crash-involved riders in safety influencing factors and hot zone identification.A Poisson lognormal bivariate conditional autoregressive(PLN-BCAR)model was developed to account for potential correlations between crashes and involved riders. The model was compared with the univariate Poisson lognormal conditional autoregressive(UPLN-CAR)model and the bivariate Poisson lognormal conditional autoregressive(BPLNCAR)model;the PLN-BCAR model outperformed the other two models in its better interpretation of the influencing factors and its more efficient parameter estimation.Model results indicated that crashes were mainly associated with roadway and land use characteristics, while involved road users were mainly associated with socioeconomic and land use characteristics. The potential for safety improvement method was adopted to identify hot zones for countermeasure implementation. Results showed over 60%of the identified hot zones were inconsistent:they needed improvement in either engineering or education but not both. These findings can help target the type of improvement to better utilize resources for NMV safety. 展开更多

Management of recreational access on public forest lands is a complex issue of growing global importance. The provision of public recreation opportunities is part of the suite of ecological goods and services that must be considered by many forest managers. Effective access management is predicated on understanding the attitudes and perceptions of recreation users in order to predict and influence visitor behaviour and gauge the acceptance of new management strategies. Potential access management strategies vary given the nature of recreation activities and include: restricting the amount, type, and spatial distribution of use, visitor education, temporal restrictions and enhancing site durability. In this research we examined the views of recreation users on public lands in southwestern Alberta, Canada through implementation of an online survey (n = 945) with a focus on access management options. The results indicate a strong belief that the quality of the recreation experience is declining and that increased management and enforcement are required. More detailed analysis indicates that demographic and user-type variables strongly influence ideas about appropriate management. Forest managers need to engage with, understand, and respond to a wide variety of recreation user needs and preferences. 展开更多

Purpose–This study aims to propose a centralized optimal control model for automated left-turn platoon at contraflow left-turn lane(CLL)intersections.Design/methodology/approach–The lateral lane change control and the longitudinal acceleration in the control horizon are optimized simultaneously with the objective of maximizing traffic efficiency and smoothness. The proposed model is cast into a mixed-integer linear programming problem and then solved by the branch-and-bound technique.Findings–The proposed model has a promising control effect under different geometric controlled conditions. Moreover, the proposed model performs robustly under various safety time headways, lengths of the CLL and green times of the main signal.Originality/value–This study proposed a centralized optimal control model for automated left-turn platoon at CLL intersections. The lateral lane change control and the longitudinal acceleration in the control horizon are optimized simultaneously with the objective of maximizing traffic efficiency and smoothness。 展开更多
