We analytically and numerically investigate a signal light storing mechanism based on the controllable electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT)effect.We demonstrate that the isolation between the waveguide and the cavities cannot be achieved instantly as soon as the two cavities are tuned into resonance,no matter the index tuning rate is ultrafast or slow.We also investigate the temporal evolution features of the intracavity energy when the pulse during time is prolonged.We find many periodical oscillations of the trapped energy in both cavities,and they are entirely complementary.Our analysis shows that the adiabatic wavelength conversion in both cavities and a phase difference π between them play critical roles in this phenomenon. 展开更多

We investigate the light propagation dynamics in ultra-cold Rydberg medium with inverted-Y configuration based on the superatom theory.It is viable to store light information in two types of atomic spin coherence(trivial spin coherence and Rydberg spin coherence),which makes the system a prospective platform for versatile light manipulation.A normal feature is to realize efficient light storage with simultaneous resonant control fields applied.An intriguing feature is to split light into two beams with different intensities and statistical properties if the control fields are applied separately.The beam of light retrieved from the Rydberg spin coherence is severely attenuated and shows anti-bunching character accompanied by the cooperative optical nonlinearity.Moreover,generation and manipulation of beating signal are achievable by applying the non-resonant control fields. 展开更多

We experimentally study the generation and storage of double slow light pulses in a pr^3+:Y2SiO5 crystal. Under electromagnetically induced transparency, a single signal pulse is stored in the spin coherence of the crystal. By simultaneously switching on two control fields to recall the stored information, the spin coherence is converted into two slow light pulses with distinct frequencies. Furthermore, the storage and controlled retrieval of double slow light pulses are obtained by manipulating the control fields. This study of double slow light pulses may have practical applications in information processing and all-optical networks. 展开更多

We present an improved version of the superatom(SA)model to examine the slow-light dynamics of a few-photons signal field in cold Rydberg atoms with van der Waals(vdW)interactions.A main feature of this version is that it promises consistent estimations on total Rydberg excitations based on dynamic equations of SAs or atoms.We consider two specific cases in which the incident signal field contains more photons with a smaller detuning or less photons with a larger detuning so as to realize the single-photon-level light storage.It is found that vdW interactions play a significant role even for the slow-light dynamics of a single-photon signal field as distributed Rydberg excitations are inevitable in the picture of dark-state polariton.Moreover,the stored(retrieved)signal field exhibits a clearly asymmetric(more symmetric)profile because its leading and trailing edges undergo different(identical)traveling journeys,and higher storage/retrieval efficiencies with well preserved profiles apply only to weaker and well detuned signal fields.These findings are crucial to understand the nontrivial interplay of single-photon-level light storage and distributed Rydberg excitations. 展开更多

We experimentally demonstrate multiple frequency conversion via atomic spin coherence of storing a light pulse in a doped solid. The essence of this multiple frequency conversion is four-wave mixing based on stored atomic spin coherence. Through electromagnetically induced transparency, an input probe pulse is stored into atomic spin coherence by modulating the intensity of the control field. By using two different control fields to interact with the coherently prepared medium, the stored atomic spin coherence can be transformed into three different information channels. Multiple frequency conversion is implemented efficiently by manipulating the spectra of the control fields to scatter atomic spin coherence. This multiple frequency conversion is expected to have potential applications in information processing and communication network. 展开更多

We report an experimental study of electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT)-based light storage in a cloud of cold atoms loaded into a magneto-optical-trap(MOT). After the MOT is turned off, the retrieval efficiencies of rightand left-circularly polarized signal light fields each as a function of storage time are measured for different time delays between MOT off and the storage event, respectively. The results show that in the delay ranging from 0.015 ms to 3.5 ms,the retrieval efficiency for a zero-storage time(0.2 μs) and the storage lifetime can exceed 15% and 1.4 ms, respectively.The measured results will provide important help for optimizing the storage of the polarized entanglement photons in cold atomic ensembles. 展开更多

China's Horqin Sandy Land,a formerly lush grassland,has experienced extensive desertification that caused considerable carbon(C) losses from the plant-soil system.Natural restoration through grazing exclusion is a widely suggested option to sequester C and to restore degraded land.In a desertified grassland,we investigated the C accumulation in the total and light fractions of the soil organic matter from 2005 to 2013 during natural restoration.To a depth of 20 cm,the light fraction organic carbon(LFOC) storage increased by 221 g C/m2(84%) and the total soil organic carbon(SOC) storage increased by 435 g C/m2(55%).The light fraction dry matter content represented a small proportion of the total soil mass(ranging from 0.74% in 2005 to 1.39% in 2013),but the proportion of total SOC storage accounted for by LFOC was remarkable(ranging from 33% to 40%).The C sequestration averaged 28 g C/(m2·a) for LFOC and 54 g C/(m2·a) for total SOC.The total SOC was strongly and significantly positively linearly related to the light fraction dry matter content and the proportions of fine sand and silt+clay.The light fraction organic matter played a major role in total SOC sequestration.Our results suggest that grazing exclusion can restore desertified grassland and has a high potential for sequestering SOC in the semiarid Horqin Sandy Land. 展开更多

In this paper, we first present a full numerical simulation for the trapping and retrieval procedure of eight continuing '1' Guassian pulses (i.e., '11111111') in the electromagnetically induced transparency (BIT) medium. This simulation shows that an BIT medium has the ability to store multiple light pulses in a shape-preserving way. And we also, for the first time, give the formula evaluating the maximum number of pulses that can be stored by an EIT medium at one time. This work reveals a new possible way to the reversible storage of the photonic information. 展开更多
