A seismic-induced landslide is a common geological catastrophe that occurs in nature. The Wangjiayan landslide, which was triggered by the Wenchuan earthquake,is a typical case in point. The Wanjiayan landslide caused many casualties and resulted in enormous property loss. This study constructs a simple surficial failure model based on the upper bound approach of three-dimensional(3D)limit analysis to evaluate the slope stability of the Wangjiayan case, while a traditional two-dimensional(2D)analysis is also conducted as a reference for comparison with the results of the 3D analysis.A quasi-static calculation is used to study the effect of the earthquake in terms of horizontal ground acceleration, while a parametric study is conducted to evaluate the critical cohesion of slopes.Rather than employing a 3D analysis, using the 2D analysis yields an underestimation regarding the safety factor. In the Wangjiayan landslide, the difference in the factors of safety between the 3D and 2D analyses can reach 20%.The sliding surface morphology as determined by the 3D method is similar to actual morphology, and the parameters of both are also compared to analyze the reliability of the proposed 3D method. 展开更多

The traditional deterministic analysis for tunnel face stability neglects the uncertainties of geotechnical parameters, while the simplified reliability analysis which models the potential uncertainties by means of random variables usually fails to account for soil spatial variability. To overcome these limitations, this study proposes an efficient framework for conducting reliability analysis and reliability-based design(RBD)of tunnel face stability in spatially variable soil strata. The three-dimensional(3D)rotational failure mechanism of the tunnel face is extended to account for the soil spatial variability, and a probabilistic framework is established by coupling the extended mechanism with the improved Hasofer-Lind-Rackwits-Fiessler recursive algorithm(iHLRF)as well as its inverse analysis formulation. The proposed framework allows for rapid and precise reliability analysis and RBD of tunnel face stability. To demonstrate the feasibility and efficacy of the proposed framework,an illustrative case of tunnelling in frictional soils is presented, where the soil's cohesion and friction angle are modelled as two anisotropic cross-correlated lognormal random fields. The results show that the proposed method can accurately estimate the failure probability(or reliability index)regarding the tunnel face stability and can efficiently determine the required supporting pressure for a target reliability index with soil spatial variability being taken into account.Furthermore, this study reveals the impact of various factors on the support pressure, including coefficient of variation,cross-correlation between cohesion and friction angle,as well as autocorrelation distance of spatially variable soil strata. The results also demonstrate the feasibility of using the forward and/or inverse first-order reliability method(FORM)in high-dimensional stochastic problems. It is hoped that this study may provide a practical and reliable framework for determining the stability of tunnels in complex soil strata. 展开更多

The face stability problem is a major concern for tunnels excavated in rock masses governed by the Hoek-Brown strength criterion. To provide an accurate prediction for the theoretical solution of the critical face pressure, this study adopts the piecewise linear method(PLM)to account for the nonlinearity of the strength envelope and proposes a new multi-horn rotational mechanism based on the Hoek-Brown strength criterion and the associative flow rule. The analytical solution of critical support pressure is derived from the energy-work balance equation in the framework of the plastic limit theorem;it is formulated as a multivariable nonlinear optimization problem relying on 2m dependent variables(m is the number of segments).Meanwhile, two classic linearized measures, the generalized tangential technique(GTT)and equivalent Mohr-Coulomb parameters method(EMM),are incorporated into the analysis for comparison.Surprisingly, the parametric study indicates a significant improvement in support pressure by up to 13%compared with the GTT,and as expected, the stability of the tunnel face is greatly influenced by the rock strength parameters. The stress distribution on the rupture surface is calculated to gain an intuitive understanding of the failure at the limit state.Although the limit analysis is incapable of calculating the true stress distribution in rock masses,a rough approximation of the stress vector on the rupture surface is permitted. In the end, sets of normalized face pressure are provided in the form of charts for a quick assessment of face stability in rock masses. 展开更多

Little research can be found in relation to the stability of anisotropic and heterogenous soils in three dimensions. In this paper,we propose a study on the three-dimensional(3D)undrained slopes in anisotropic and heterogenous clay using advanced upper and lower bounds finite element limit analysis(FELA).The obtained stability solutions are normalized, and presented by a stability number that is a function of three geometrical ratios and two material ratios,i.e.depth ratio, length ratio, slope angle, shear strength gradient ratio and anisotropic strength ratio.Numerical results are compared with experimental data in the literature, and charts are presented to cover a wide range of design parameters.Using the multivariate adaptive regression splines(MARS)analysis, the respective influence and sensitivity of each design parameter on the stability number and the failure mechanism are investigated. An empirical equation is also developed to effectively estimate the stability number. 展开更多

Hoek-Brown (HB) failure criterion is widely used to predict the strength of intact or heavily jointed rock mass. For stability analysis of rock slopes governed by the HB failure criterion, the equivalent linearity to Mohr-Coulomb (MC) criterion is often adopted, leading to the well-known equivalent Mohr-Coulomb method (EMCM). Existing studies on EMCM analysis mainly consider the shear strength of rock material, while consideration of the tensile strength is rare. This contradicts the fact that the underlying tensile strength of rock mass has considerable impact on the rock slope stability in real world. In this regard, this paper proposes a limit analysis-based approach that can account for tension in the three-dimensional (3D) stability analysis of HB rock slope. This approach is established on the equivalent linearity of the HB criterion with consideration of tensile strength, known as the equivalent tension cut-off MC method (ETMCM), and using a horn-like 3D mechanism of limit analysis. The safety factor solutions given by the proposed approach are validated by previous studies and numerical results. Parametric studies are conducted to investigate the effect of rock tensile strength on slope stability. Results show that the consideration of tension leads to a more conservative safety factor and a sharper curvature of the failure surface, and these impacts tend to be more obvious with the increases in slope inclination and slope width. Finally, the stability of the HB rock slope under seepage conditions is studied using the proposed approach. The results indicate that the effect of tensile strength is highly remarkable in seepage circumstances. 展开更多

In order to improve rib stability, failure criteria and instability mode of a thick coal seam with inter-band rock layer are analysed in this study.A three-dimensional mechanical model is established for the rib by considering the rock layer.A safety factor is defined foy the rib,and it is observed that the safety factor exhibits a positive correlation with the thickness and strength of the inter-band rock.A calculation method for determining critical parameters of the rock layer is presented to ensure the rib stability. It is revealed that incomplete propagation of the fracture at the hard rock constitutes a fundamental prerequisite for ensuring the rib stability. The influence of the position of the inter-band rock in the coal seam on failure mechanism of the rib was thoroughly investigated by developing a series of physical models for the rib at the face area. The best position for the inter-band rock in the coal seam is at a height of 1.5 m away from the roof line, which tends to provide a good stability state for the rib.For different inter-band rock positions, two ways of controlling rib by increasing supports stiffness and flexible grouting reinforcement are proposed. 展开更多

Degradation of rock mass produced by rock blasting, stress relief, and other causes is an important factor in the assessment of rock strength.Quantified as a disturbance factor, such degradation varies depending on blasting control, stress state and stress relief, and rock mass quality. This study focuses on the impact of disturbance on the safety of slopes. The disturbance in the rock mass is characterized by the geometry of the disturbed zone, its size, the magnitude, and the decaying rate with the distance away from the slope surface.A method accounting for decay of rock disturbance is presented.A study of the impact of rock disturbance characteristics on the quantitative stability measures of slopes was carried out. These characteristics included disturbed zone geometry, its thickness, the maximum magnitude of the disturbance factor, and the rate of disturbance decaying. The thickness of the disturbed zone and the maximum factor of disturbance were found to have the greatest impact. For example, the factor of safety for a 45slope in low-quality rock mass can decrease from 1.96 to 1.09 as the thickness of the disturbed zone increases from 1/4 of slope height H to the double of H and the maximum disturbance factor increases from 0.5 to 1.Uniform thickness of a disturbed zone was found to yield more conservative outcomes than the triangular zones did.The critical failure surfaces were found to be shallow for high rates of disturbance decay, and they were the deepest for spatially uniform disturbance factors. 展开更多

This paper deals with the bearing capacity determination of strip footing on a rock mass in hilly area by considering the influence of inclined and eccentric loading. Applying the generalized HoekBrown failure criterion, the failure behavior of the rock mass is modeled with the help of the power cone programming in the lower bound finite element limit analysis framework. Using bearing capacity factor(Ns), the change in bearing capacity of the strip footing due to the occurrence of eccentrically inclined loading is presented. The variations of the magnitude of Ns are obtained by examining the effects of the Hoek-Brown rock mass strength parameters(uniaxial compressive strength(sci), disturbance factor(D), rock parameter(mi), and Geological Strength Index(GSI)) in the presence of different magnitudes of eccentricity(e) and inclination angle(λ) with respect to the vertical plane, and presented as design charts. Both the inclined loading modes, i.e., inclination towards the center of strip footing(+λ) and inclination away from the center of strip footing(-λ), are adopted to perform the investigation. In addition, the correlation between the input parameters and the corresponding output is developed by utilizing the artificial neural network(ANN). Additionally, from sensitivity analysis, it is observed that inclination angle(λ) is the most sensitive parameter. For practicing engineers, the obtained design equation and design charts can be beneficial to understand the bearing capacity variation in the existence of eccentrically inclined loading in mountain areas. 展开更多

High geostress,a typical attribute of tunnels located at significant depths,is crucial in causing stress-induced failure and influencing the stability of the tunnel crown. This study developed an analytical method for the failure mechanism that occurs in deep-buried tunnel roofs, taking into account the influence of geostress. The limit analysis theory was utilized for deriving analytical solutions about the geometry of the collapsing surface and the limit supporting pressure. The collapsing surface obtained by the analytical solution was validated by the findings of the physical model test, which shows a high level of agreement with the actual one.An extensive investigation was done to explore the effects of the lateral pressure coefficients, the tunnel buried depth, the geological conditions of the surrounding rock, the long-short axis ratio, and the size of the tunnel profile. The findings indicate that an increase in the lateral pressure coefficient from 0.5 to 1.5 results in a reduction in the height of the collapsing zone by 2.08 m and the width of the collapsing zone by 1.15 m,while simultaneously increases the limit supporting pressure by 18.9%.The proposed upper bound method accurately determines the limit supporting pressure and the geometry of the collapsing surface, which aligns well with the results acquired through numerical modelling and on-site monitoring in actual engineering applications. The proposed analytical method can serve as a reference for similar crown failure issues of deep-buried tunnels. 展开更多

Earthquake-induced slope failures are common occurrences in engineering practice and pre-stressed anchor cables are an effective technique in maintaining slope stability, especially in areas that are prone to earthquakes.Furthermore, the soil at typical engineering sites also exhibit unsaturated features.Explicit considerations of these factors in slope stability estimations are crucial in producing accurate results. In this study, the seismic responses of expansive soil slopes stabilized by anchor cables is studied in the realm of kinematic limit analysis.A modified horizontal slice method is proposed to semi-analytically formulate the energy balance equation. An illustrative slope is studied to demonstrate the influences of suction, seismic excitations and anchor cables on the slope stability. The results indicate that the stabilizing effect of soil suction relates strongly to the seismic excitation and presents a sine shape as the seismic wave propagates. In higher and steeper slopes, the stabilizing effect of suction is more evident. The critical slip surface tends to be much more shallow as the seismic wave approaches the peak and vice versa. 展开更多

The problem considered in this short note is the limit load determination of a vertical rock slope. The classical limit theorem is employed with the use of adaptive finite elements and nonlinear programming to determine upper and lower bound limit loads of a Hoek-Brown vertical rock slope. The objective function of the mathematical programming problem is such as to optimize a boundary load, which is known as the limit load, resembling the ultimate bearing capacity of a strip footing. While focusing on the vertical slope, parametric studies are carried out for several dimensionless ratios such as the dimensionless footing distance ratio, the dimensionless height ratio, and the dimensionless rock strength ratio.A comprehensive set of design charts is presented, and failure envelopes shown with the results explained in terms of three identified failure mechanisms,i.e.the face, the toe,and the Prandtl-type failures. These novel results can be used with great confidence in design practice,in particularly noting that the current industry-based design procedures for the presented problem are rarely found. 展开更多

The composite pile consisting of core-pile and surrounding cement-enhanced soil is a promising pile foundation in recent years. However, how and to what extent the cement-enhanced soil influences the ultimate lateral resistance has not been fully investigated. In this paper, the ultimate lateral resistance of the composite pile was studied by finite element limit analysis(FELA)and theoretical upper-bound analysis. The results of FELA and theoretical analysis revealed three failure modes of laterally loaded composite piles. The effects of the enhanced soil thickness, strength, and pile-enhanced soil interface characteristics on the ultimate lateral resistance were studied. The results show that increasing the enhanced soil thickness leads to a significant improvement on ultimate lateral resistance factor(N P),and there is a critical thickness beyond which the thickness no longer affects the N P.Increasing the enhanced soil strength induced 6.2%-232.6%increase of N P.However,no noticeable impact was detected when the enhanced soil strength was eight times higher than that of the natural soil. The maximum increment of N P is only 30.5%caused by the increase of interface adhesion factor(a).An empirical model was developed to calculate the N P of the composite pile, and the results show excellent agreement with the analytical results. 展开更多

The accurate prediction of the bearing capacity of ring footings, which is crucial for civil engineering projects, has historically posed significant challenges.Previous research in this area has been constrained by considering only a limited number of parameters or utilizing relatively small datasets. To overcome these limitations,a comprehensive finite element limit analysis(FELA)was conducted to predict the bearing capacity of ring footings. The study considered a range of effective parameters, including clay undrained shear strength, heterogeneity factor of clay, soil friction angle of the sand layer, radius ratio of the ring footing, sand layer thickness, and the interface between the ring footing and the soil.An extensive dataset comprising 80,000 samples was assembled, exceeding the limitations of previous research. The availability of this dataset enabled more robust and statistically significant analyses and predictions of ring footing bearing capacity. In light of the time-intensive nature of gathering a substantial dataset,a customized deep neural network(DNN)was developed specifically to predict the bearing capacity of the dataset rapidly. Both computational and comparative results indicate that the proposed DNN(i.e.DNN-4)can accurately predict the bearing capacity of a soil with an R2 value greater than 0.99 and a mean squared error(MSE)below 0.009 in a fraction of 1 s,reflecting the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method. 展开更多

Based on the upper bound limit analysis theorem and the shear strength reduction technique, the equation for expressing critical limit-equilibrium state was employed to define the safety factor of a given slope and its corresponding critical failure mechanism by means of the kinematical approach of limit analysis theory. The nonlinear shear strength parameters were treated as variable parameters and a kinematically admissible failure mechanism was considered for calculation schemes. The iterative optimization method was adopted to obtain the safety factors. Case study and comparative analysis show that solutions presented here agree with available predictions when nonlinear criterion reduces to linear criterion, and the validity of present method could be illuminated. From the numerical results, it can also be seen that nonlinear parameter rn, slope foot gradient ,β, height of slope H, slope top gradient a and soil bulk density γ have significant effects on the safety factor of the slope. 展开更多

Based on the upper bound of limit analysis, the plane-strain analysis of the slopes reinforced with a row of piles to the 3D case was extended. A 3D rotational failure mechanism was adopted to yield the upper bound of the factor of safety. Parametric studies were carried out to explore the end effects of the slope failures and the effects of the pile location and diameter on the safety of the reinforced slopes. The results demonstrate that the end effects nearly have no effects on the most suitable location of the installed piles but have significant influence on the safety of the slopes. For a slope constrained to a narrow width, the slope becomes more stable owing to the contribution of the end effects. When the slope is reinforced with a row of piles in small space between piles, the effects of group piles are significant for evaluating the safety of slopes. The presented method is more appropriate for assessing the stability of slopes reinforced with piles and can be also utilized in the design of plies stabilizing the unstable slopes. 展开更多

Based on the characteristic that the potential sliding surfaces of rock slope are commonly in the shape of either line or fold line, analysis thought of conventional pile foundation in the flat ground under complex load condition was applied and the upper-bound theorem of limit analysis was used to compute thrust of rock layers with all possible distribution shapes. The interaction of slope and pile was considered design load in terms of slope thrust, and the finite difference method was derived to calculate inner-force and displacement of bridge pile foundation in rock slope under complex load condition. The result of example shows that the distribution model of slope thrust has certain impact on displacement and inner-force of bridge pile foundation. The maximum displacement growth rate reaches 54% and the maximum moment and shear growth rates reach only 15% and 20%,respectively,but the trends of inner-force and displacement of bridge pile foundation are basically the same as those of the conventional pile foundation in the flat ground. When the piles bear the same level lateral thrust, the distribution shapes of slope thrust have different influence on inner-force of pile foundation, especially the rectangle distribution, and the triangle thrust has the smallest displacement and inner-force of pile foundation. 展开更多

A stability analysis approach of tunnel face considering a longitudinally inclined tunnel angle and anisotropic purely cohesive soils based on a continuous velocity field (CVF) is investigated in this study. Based on the kinematic approach of limit analysis and the discretization technique, an improved three-dimensional CVF model for longitudinally inclined tunnels driven by pressurized shields is proposed. With the proposed model, the critical support pressure acted on tunnel face is determined by the work-balance equation. A serial of finite element numerical models are conducted to validate the proposed model. Finally, the effects of tunnel inclination angles, several dimensionless parameters as well as soil anisotropy on the critical support pressure are investigated. The numerical results show that the effects of the soil anisotropy and the tunnel inclination angle on tunnel faces should be considered in the actual design of tunneling engineering. 展开更多
