On Feminism in Literary Translation

The 1980s witness the emergence and development of the cultural turn in translation studies,which closely combined translation and culture from then on,and a new perspective-the cultural perspective for translation studies.The gender issue is an important part of cultural studies.Feminist translation theory states its viewpoints on the role of gender,and approves of translators'gender role in the translation of the original text.In a given social context,the writers and translators of literature are both gendered human beings.Therefore,on doubtfully they are influenced by the political,economical and cultural factors.These will more or less put an influence on the writing and the translating.This paper aims to have a systematic analysis on feminist translation theory and explore the relationship between feminism and literary translation.

A Study of Su Mansu's Literary Translation and His Translation Principles

Su Manshu was a writer and translator in modern China. In addition to his fruitful literary creation, in the aspect of translation, he translated a lot of poetry in English literature, Hugo‘s Les Miserable's and also some Indian literary works. He is good at making use of old verses to translate poetry. As to translation principles, he advocates "translation without increasing", "translation without increasing ornaments," and practices the method of "translation according to the source text context".

Cultural Context in Literary Translation——from the Perspective of Explanatory Function and Restrictive Function

Literary translation is not merely the transformation of words,but it is a cross-cultural activity from cultural perspective.The paper mainly explores the concept of cultural context and the relationship between cultural context and literary translation,and analyzes explanatory function and restrictive function of cultural context in literary translation.If these functions can be involved in the literary translation,it is necessary for translators to resort to different translation strategies according to the different target cultural context.The selection of translation strategies is never random,but constrained by the cultural context.

Reception Aesthetics and Its Enlightenment on Literary Translation

As a kind of reader-centered paradigm of literary research, reception aesthetics studies the reception effects of the text,which is a shift of the focus of literary criticism from the relation between the author and the text to the relation between the text and the reader. Based on the enlightenment of reception aesthetics on literary translation, the translator — the reader of the original text as well as the author of the translated text — must take the reader's"horizon of expectations"into consideration during the process of translation, so as to reach the"fusion of horizons"to the largest extent.

The Origin of Four-Character Structures with er (而) in Literary Translation from English into Chinese: A Descriptive Study of A Passage

Four-character structures in Chinese are commonly discussed as tools of embodying the aesthetic properties of both oral and written literature works.The use of four-character structures in the Chinese translated texts could have the same function,and it is not hard to find in the Chinese translations of English literature works that four-character structures are largely adopted.Through collecting four-character structures with er(而)from a translated work of A Passage to India,and investigating on their origins in the source English text,this thesis uses statistic methods to induce some linguistic properties on the counterparts.From the perspective of analyzing those counterparts which correspond to the Chinese four-character structure translations,certain characteristics or properties are discovered,and inspirations on literary translation techniques are provided.Some discussions are also made concerning possible relations between the four-character structures with er(而)and their ST counterparts.

A Case Study of Liang Qichao’s Literary Creations and Translations From Localization Theory

Intercultures play a crucial role in localization of translation. They are the essential reference resources for those who are translators as well as writers in their literary translation or creation. Translators contribute to the extension of source culture and in target culture by means of intercultures to form new localized cultural paradigms, which help writers to improve their creations. Liang Qichao’s literary creation was influenced by the literary paradigms he translated. Through the translation, he borrowed new literary paradigms from foreign languages and converted them into more acceptable ones in his literature. The paper, from the perspectives of localization and intercultures by Anthony Pym, analyzes the characteristics and interactions between Liang Qichao’s literary translation and literary creation.

On the Study of Translation Approaches of Culture-loaded Words in Literary Works

Culture-loaded words refer to expressions and idioms that carry typically culture messages. The peculiarity of one culture cannot be understood or accepted by readers from another culture. The uniqueness very likely makes misunderstanding and may lead to cultural vacancy in other cultures. Due to the culture differences between Chinese and English, it is hard for a translator to achieve complete equivalence at the level of word. This paper discusses the translation approaches of Chinese cultureloaded words in literary works.

Literary translation is the re-creation of the language art.To translate an English novel into Chinese one,translators need the skill of literature re-creation.Taking Zhang Guruo's translated version Tess of the D'urbervilles as an example,we perceive that translators have subjectivity and they should break the boundary between writing and translating.When a translator translates a piece of works,he must get rid of the constraint of the surface structures of the original works,and reproduces the flavor of the original novel.But the translators should try to show the original scenes in the original English novel to target readers.
