Analysis of Culture Conflicts in The Joy Luck Club from the High-context and Low-context Culture Perspective

As a work that reflects culture differences between China and America, the Joy Luck Club has drawn a wide attention from scholars whose researches are more of holistic analyses from a macro perspective of cross-cultural communication. In accordance with the degree of dependence of semantic on dialogue context and dialogue language itself, Edward Hall divides culture into high-context culture and low-context culture, and holds that Chinese culture is a high-context culture, while American culture is a low- context one. According to Hall's theory, the Sino- US cultural conflicts reflected by the mother- daughter conflicts in the Joy Luck Club can be analyzed from high-context and low-context culture perspective. And after conflicts, there finally will be a harmonious trend of Sino-US culture development, changing from clash and conflict to convergence and integration.

On the Cultural Conflicts in The Wedding Banquet Based on Hall's High-Low Context Culture Theory

The Wedding Banquet is a movie about a gay Taiwan Residents immigrant man who marries a mainland Chinese woman to placate his parents and get her a green card. His plan backfires and things get out of hand when his parents arrive in the United States to plan his wedding banquet. Based on Hall's theory of high-context and low-context culture, this paper analyzes the cultural conflicts in the movie from six perspectives, and offers suggestions to the harmonious development of China and America. It is hoped that the paper can help readers get an in-depth comprehension of Hall's theory of high-context and low-context culture and discover some invisible conflicts between China and the West and finally raise people's consciousness of cultural conflicts and ways of handling the conflicts. With the advancement of globalization, intercultural communicative competence is becoming more and more important, and social communication between China and the West will become more relaxed and fruitful if people acquire more knowledge in intercultural communication.

Production of Low Fat Cheddar Cheese Made Using Exopolysaccharide-Producing Cultures and Selected Ripening Cultures

Low fat cheeses often suffer from undesirable texture and flavor. The objective of this study is to improve the yield, texture, flavor and quality of low fat Cheddar cheese during ripening using exopolysaccharide-producing lactobacilli and ripening cultures. The article represents one of the first attempts to tackle both texture and flavor at the same time. The study reveals the effect of aging on the texture and flavor of low fat Cheddar cheese over a ripening period of six months. The cheese manufactured with a modified protocol using EPS-producing cultures and ripening cultures showed higher values for moisture content (45%) and yield (9.4%) when compared to cheese manufactured with the conventional procedure and without the addition of EPS-producing cultures and ripening cultures (37.7%) and (4.9%) respectively. The obtained results indicated a 70% decrease in the fat content of the cheese. Texture profile analysis (TPA) indicated that the hardness, the cohesiveness, the springiness, the gumminess and the chewiness of the cheeses made using the EPS-producing cultures decreased with aging. The texture of the ripened low fat cheese made using EPS-producing cultures was described as chewy, springy, cohesive and smooth. The use of the ripening cultures resulted in the elimination of the bitter flavor defect which is a common problem in low fat Cheddar.

Response of Two Sweet Potato （Ipomoea batatas L. Lam） Varieties Regenerated on Low Cost Tissue Culture Medium

Plant tissue culture continues to be of great interest within the realms of molecular biology, plant breeding and plant health However, different plant cultivars have different culture efficiencies to tissue culture. In this research, the response of two Kenyan sweet potato varieties, KEMB 36 and Tainurey, cultured on a low cost tissue culture medium was evaluated. The low cost medium contained plant nutrients that were obtained from locally available fertilizers. Each conventional Murashige and Skoog （MS） macronutrient was individually substituted with a locally available fertilizer. The conventional source of micronutrients was substituted with Stanes~ Iodized Microfood while sucrose was obtained from table sugar. Performance of the two cultivars was monitored over a period of six weeks. KEMB 36 had a better performance than Tainurey with an average of eight nodes, seven leaves, three roots and height of four centimeters per plantlet indicating genotype-dependent response.

Irradiation Response of Adipose-derived Stem Cells under Three-dimensional Culture Condition

Objective Adipose tissue distributes widely in human body. The irradiation response of the adipose cells in vivo remains to be investigated. In this study we investigated irradiation response of adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) under three-dimensional culture condition. Methods ASCs were isolated and cultured in low attachment dishes to form three-dimensional (3D) spheres in vitro. The neuronal differentiation potential and stem-liked characteristics was monitored by using immunofluoresence staining and flow cytometry in monolayer and 3D culture. To investigate the irradiation sensitivity of 3D sphere culture, the fraction of colony survival and micronucleus were detected in monolayer and 3D culture. Soft agar assays were performed for measuring malignant transformation for the irradiated monolayer and 3D culture. Results The 3D cultured ASCs had higher differentiation potential and an higher stem-like cell percentage. The 3D cultures were more radioresistant after either high linear energy transfer (LET) carbon ion beam or low LET X-ray irradiation compared with the monolayer cell. The ASCs’ potential of cellular transformation was lower after irradiation by soft agar assay. Conclusion These findings suggest that adipose tissue cell are relatively genomic stable and resistant to genotoxic stress.

Transforming Cross-Cultural conflicts into Fusion:A Cultural Interpretation of The Joy Luck Club

People with different cultural backgrounds would inevitably encounter contradictions and conflicts in their communication due to their different values and lifestyles.This paper draws on the research findings of high-low context and high-low power distance theories to analyze the cultural contradictions and conflicts in The Joy Luck Club.The result shows that mutual respect and understanding are needed in intercultural communication and to achieve cultural fusion,people should absorb new culture on the basis of inheriting their traditional culture.

Low cost development strategy for oilfields in China under low oil prices

By reviewing the challenges in the development of oilfields in China under low oil prices,this study analyzes the root causes of cost rising,put forwards the low cost oilfield development strategy and specific paths to realize the strategy,and predicts the development potential and prospect of oilfields in China.In addition to the low grade of the reservoir and high development maturation,the fundamental reasons of development full cost rising of oilfields in China are as follows:(1)Facing the problem of resources turning poorer in quality,we have built production capacity at a pace too fast before making enough technical and experimental preparation;(2)technical engineering service model leads to high service cost;(3)team of oil development expertise and matched engineering system cannot satisfy the technical requirements of stabilizing oil production,controlling water cut and fine development.To realize development at low cost,the core is to increase economic recoverable reserves.The concrete paths include:(1)to explore the"Daqing oilfield development culture",improve the ability of leaders in charge of development,and inspire potential of staff;(2)to improve the ability of reservoir dynamics control,and implement precise development by following scientific principles;(3)to speed up integration of water flooding and enhanced oil recovery(EOR)and technological upgrading in order to enhance oil recovery;(4)to innovate key techniques in gas flooding and accelerate the industrial popularization of gas flooding;(5)to break the related transaction barriers and create new management models;and(6)to collaboratively optimize strategic layout and cultivate key oil bases.Although oilfield development in China faces huge challenges in cost,the low-cost development strategy will succeed as long as strategic development of mature and new oil fields is well planned.The cores to lower cost are to control decline rate and enhance oil recovery in mature oil fields,and increase single well productivity through technical innovation and improve engineering service efficiency through management innovation in new oil fields.

On Affective Communication——From Perspective of Cultural Context

Nowadays, cross-cultural study is turning to pragmatic fields concerning communication, such as business negotiation,overseas life and language teaching, etc. This paper reviews previous studies of culture and communication, attempting to reveal how to have affective communication from perspective of cultural context by case studies. As a result, theoretical foundation and case studies prove that although we have cooperative principles as general guidelines for communication, cultural awareness, especially awareness of High Context(HC) and Low Context(LC), still plays a key role in cross-cultural communication by making up for the lost of meaning while transmission.

Cause Analysis of Sociopragmatic Failure in Intercultural Communication

With the rapid development of science and globalization,communication between people is becoming more and more convenient and flexible.However,communication breakdown still occurs occasionally in the process of intercultural communication.Pragmatics failure is one of the main causes of the bias in intercultural communication.Based on the Jenny Thomas’theory,pragmatic failure is divided into pragmalinguistic failure and sociopragmatic failure,the former is defined as the lack of pragmatic knowledge,while the latter affects more fundamentally the effect of intercultural communication as sociopragmatic failure is caused by the differences in cultural dimensions,ways of thinking,value orientation between speakers.By cognizing and understanding the main causes of pragmatic failures,intercultural speakers could avoid misunderstanding between different cultures and promote their intercultural communicative competence,in order to achieve an effective result of intercultural communication.

Blastocyst development potential of D3 low quality embryos

Objective:To investigate the potential of blastocyst development of D3 low quality embryos for blastocyst culturing and freezing. Methods:Two thousand one hundred and eighty embryos of 398 IVF/ICSI patients’ were observed after D3 embryo transfer.The low-quality embryos were cultured by sequential micro-drops and continuously observed blastocyst formation from D3 to D6. Results:(1) A total of 1,546 low-quality embryos were collected,and 426 blastocysts formed in D5-D6.Total blastocyst formation rate(BFR) was 27.56%,of which embryos with grade 6Ⅲ/Ⅳwere 40.87%(318/778),5Ⅰ/Ⅱ28.85%(30/104),4Ⅰ/Ⅱ8.88%(16/180),4Ⅲ/Ⅳ19.72%(56/284),2-3Ⅰ/Ⅱ3%(6/200).(2) Embryos with more blastomeres had a higher blastocyst formation rate.The lower qualities of embryos resulted in lower blastocyst formation rate. Conclusions:Low-quality embryos still have the potential to develop into blastocysts.Therefore,they should not be discarded on D3.They should be continually cultured to D6 in order to reduce embryo wastage and get good clinical results.

生育文化、生育制度与生育率——兼论三孩生育政策及其配套支持措施的可能效果

随着中国少子老龄化程度的不断加深,如何促使生育率回升至适度水平成为政府和学界重点关注的议题,其中以三孩生育政策及其配套支持措施为代表的鼓励型生育制度和以“多子多福”为核心的传统生育文化被寄予厚望,希望借此帮助中国摆脱“低生育率陷阱”。然而,研究发现:中华文化圈国家或地区的生育率远低于其他国家与地区,而海外华人则是所在国生育率最低的族群之一,传统生育文化在现代社会已然发生了嬗变,对促使低生育率回升的作用已十分有限,取而代之的是“晚婚晚育少生优生甚至不婚不育”的现代生育文化,并形塑起一种内生性的低生育率机制。与此同时,欧洲和东亚国家通过构建鼓励型生育制度后依然深陷低生育率陷阱,无法有效刺激低生育率回升至适度水平。中国三孩生育政策及其配套支持措施的预期效果同样不容乐观,而生育文化、生育制度和生育率之间存在着十分复杂的互构关系,亟需从结构性和内生性的“文化—制度”视角去重新审视我国生育率转变的形成机制。

低盐和淡水养殖模式下草鱼肌肉营养和风味品质评价

为探究低盐养殖草鱼(Ctenopharyngodon idellus)肌肉的品质特征,以淡水养殖草鱼(体质量为1.83 kg±0.13 kg)和低盐养殖草鱼(体质量为1.37 kg±0.21 kg)为研究对象,分析了两组草鱼肌肉营养成分(水分、脂肪、蛋白质、氨基酸与脂肪酸组成及含量)、挥发性风味物质和质构特性的差异,并进行了品质比较与评价。结果表明:低盐养殖(低盐组)草鱼肌肉中蛋白质、脂肪、必需氨基酸总量、多不饱和脂肪酸总量、EPA+DHA含量极显著高于淡水养殖(淡水组)草鱼(P<0.01),且具有较高的营养价值;1-辛烯-3-醇对两种养殖模式下草鱼的总体风味贡献最大,低盐组草鱼肌肉中呈异味的1-辛烯-3-醇、辛醛、(E,E)-2,4-癸二烯醛含量显著低于淡水组(P<0.05),具有较好的风味;低盐组草鱼肌肉的硬度和咀嚼性均显著高于淡水组草鱼(P<0.05),具有较好的口感。研究表明,低盐养殖草鱼的营养和风味品质均优于淡水养殖草鱼,具有更高的食用价值。
