The microstructure in the coarse-grained heat affected zone (CGHAZ) of NULCB steel under laser welding conditions was investigated by thermal simulation. The influence of the cooling time from 800℃ to 500℃.t8/5 (0.3-30 s), on the microstructure of the CGHAZ was discussed. The experimental results indicate that the microstructnre of the CGHAZ is only the granular bainite which consists of bainitic ferrite (BF) lath and M-A constituent while t8/5 is 0.3-30 s. The M-A constituent consists of twinned martensite and residual austenite, and the change of the volume fraction of the residual austenite in the M-A constituent is very small when t8/5 is between 0.3 and 30 s. The morphology of the M-A constituent obviously changes with the variation of t8/5.As t8/5 increases, tile average width, gross and shape parameter of the M-A constituent increase, while the line density of the M-A constituent decreases.展开更多

Thermal simulator was used to simulate microstructure evolution in HAZ with heat input of 10-100 kJ/cm welding thermal cycle. Results indicated that microstructure of HAZ mainly consisted of acicular ferrite(AF) inside grain and high volume fraction of grain boundaries ferrite(GBF) at prior austenite boundaries; the size of GBF and effective grain size increased with increasing heat input. Excellent impact toughness(more than 150 J at-40 ℃) was obtained in HAZ with heat input less than 50 k J/cm. When heat input was 100 kJ/cm, the impact toughness of HAZ decreased to 18 J because of the presence of large M-A constituent with lath-form in HAZ, assisting the micro-crack initiation and decreasing the crack initiation energy seriously. Effect of inclusions on acicular ferrite transformation in HAZ was also discussed.展开更多

The weld thermal simulation test was carried out on Gleeble 1500 thermal mechanical test machine. The Charpy tests were completed at --20 ℃ for evaluating the toughness of coarse grain heat affected zone (CGHAZ). The microstructure was examined by optical microscope (OM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the austenite constituent was quantified by X-ray diffraction. The results showed that the ultra-low carbon can improve the toughness of CGHAZ by suppressing the formation of carbide, decreasing the martensite austenite (M-A) constituent and increasing the residual austenite in the M A.展开更多

The results indicate that the normalized microstructures of the steels are typical granular bainite(GB) composed primarily of bainitic ferrite and martensite and/or austenite(M-A) constituents. The M-A constituents are transformed into ferrite and carbides and/or agglomerated carbides after tempering at 700℃ for 4 h. The addition of RE decreases the onset temperature of bainitic transformation and results in the formation of finer bainitic ferrite, and reduces the amount of carbon-rich M-A constituents. For the normalized and tempered samples, the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature(DBTT) decreases with increasing RE content to a critical value of 0.012 wt.%. Lower DBTT and higher upper shelf energy are attributed to the decreased effective grain size and lower amount of coarse agglomerated carbides from the decomposition of massive M-A constituents. However, the addition of RE in excess of 0.012 wt.% leads to a substantial increase in the volume fraction of large-sized inclusions, which are extremely detrimental to the impact toughness.展开更多
