Remodeled clay and sand rock specimens were prepared by designing lateral confinement and water drainage experiments based on the stress exerted on granular materials in a waste dump.An in situ test was conducted in an internal waste dump;the physical and mechanical parameters of the remodeled rock mass dumped at different time and depths were measured.Based on statistics, regression analysis was performed with regard to the shearing stress parameters acquired from the two tests.Other factors, such as remodeling pressure(burial depth),remodeling time(amount of time since waste was dumped),and the corresponding functional relationship, were determined.Analysis indicates that the cohesion of the remodeled clay and its remodeling pressure are correlated by a quadratic function but are not correlated with remodeling time length. In situ experimental results indicate that the shear strength of reshaped granular materials in the internal dump is positively correlated with burial depth but poorly correlated with time length.Cohesion Cand burial depth H follow a quadratic function, specifically for a short time since waste has been dumped. As revealed by both in situ and laboratory experiments, the remodeling strength of granular materials varies in a certain pattern. The consistency of such materials verifies the reliability of the remodeling experimental program. 展开更多

Freeze-drying of the initially porous frozen material with pre-built pores from liquid material was found experimentally to save drying time by over 30% with an initial saturation being 0.28 compared with the conventional operation with the initial saturation being 1, using mannitol as the solid material. In order to understand the mass and heat transfer phenomena of this novel process, a two-dimensional mathematical model of coupled mass and heat transfer was derived with reference to the cylindrical coordinate system. Three adsorption–desorption equilibrium relationships between the vapour pressure and saturation value namely, power-law, Redhead's style and Kelvin's style equation, were tested. Kelvin's style in exponential form of adsorption equilibrium relation gave an excellent agreement between the model prediction and experimental measurement when the equation parameter, γ, of 5000 was applied. Analyses of temperature and ice saturation profiles show that additional heat needs to be supplied to increase the sample temperature in order to promote the desorption process. Simulation also shows that there is a threshold initial porosity after which the drying time decreased with the increase in the initial porosity. Enhanced freeze-drying is expected to be achieved by simultaneously enhancing mass and heat transfer of the process. 展开更多

A measuring method of the echo reduction of passive materials by using the time reversal(TR) technique is presented. To measure the echo reduction of a sample with this approach, the received signals are firstly focused according to the TR theory. Then, the sample is removed and the TR processing is again employed to realize the focus of the received signal. Finally, the echo reduction of the sample is evaluated with these focusing signals. Besides, to calibrate the measured echo reduction via the TR technique, a standard sample is employed to measure a constant coefficient that only depends on the measurement environment. An aluminum plate sample and a steel plate sample with the same size of 1.1 mxl.O m x0.005 m axe tested in a wave guide tank. The experimental results show that the calibrated values are well consistent with theoretical results under the free field at the measured frequency range of0.5-20 kHz. The relative errors of all the measured values are less than 10% and the values of the expanded uncertainty are less than 1.5 dB. The TR processing focuses the energy in spatial domain and temporal domain, so it can be used to measure the echo reduction of passive materials in the environments with reflections induced by boundaries and low frequency sources. 展开更多

A method using the time reversal(TR) technique to measure the insertion loss(IL) of passive materials is presented.Firstly the received signals are focused according to the TR theory when there is not a sample between the source and the received array. Then, the sample is placed near the received array and the TR processing is again employed to realize the focus of the received signal. Finally, the IL of the sample is evaluated from these focusing signals.Because the TR processing can focus the energy in spatial domain and time domain, the method can be used to measure acoustic properties of passive materials in a waveguide tank with reflections induced by boundaries or with low source frequencies. Two samples with the same size of 1.1 m×1.0 m×5 mm are tested in the waveguide tank. The method is demonstrated by the comparison of the theoretical and the experimental results in the measured frequency range of 1-20 kHz. 展开更多

In the field of optical interconnecting network and in super fast photonic computing system, the tree architecture and optical nonlinear materials can play a significant role. Nonlinear optical material may find important uses in optical switching. Optical switch using nonlinear material makes it possible for one optical signal to control and switch another optical signal through nonlinear interaction in a material. In this communication such materials have been successfully exploited to design an all-optical tree-net architecture, which can be utilized for time division multiplexing scheme in all-optical domain. 展开更多

Material point method(MPM)was originally introduced for large deformation problems in solid mechanics applications.Later,it has been successfully applied to solve a wide range of material behaviors. However, previous research has indicated that MPM exhibits numerical instabilities when resolving incompressible flow problems. We study Chorin's projection method in MPM algorithm to simulate material incompressibility. Two projection-type schemes,non-incremental projection and incremental projection, are investigated for their accuracy and stability within MPM.Numerical examples show that the non-incremental projection scheme provides stable results in single phase MPM framework.Further,it avoids artificial pressure oscillations and small time steps that are present in the explicit MPM approach. 展开更多
