This paper first provides a brief historical overview of the development of college English teaching materials in China. Then by investigating studies on college English teaching materials for non-English major students from different perspectives, suggestions are proposed to provide guidance for effective ELT materials writing and evaluation: (1) Language corpora, providing empirical data concerning language usage, have a distinctive advantage in ELT materials writing and evaluation; (2) principles for ESP materials writing are developed; and (3) a systematic approach combining qualitative analysis with quantitative analysis to materials evaluation is suggested to ensure the validity and reliability of materials evaluation 展开更多

The objective of this paper was to develop a comprehensive evaluation method and index to evaluate the performance of sealants and fillers for cracks in asphalt concrete pavements using the method of principal component analysis. The performance experiments including cone penetration, softening point, flow, resilience and tension at low temperature respectively were conducted by reference of ASTM D5329 for eight sealants and fillers often used in China. There by a principal component model was developed and weight of every index was calculated. The experimental results show that there are significantly different performances for sealants and fillers often used in China. Principal component analysis is an objective method that evaluates and selects the performance of sealants and fillers for cracks in asphalt concrete pavements. 展开更多

Having paramount importance in any ESP (English for Special Purpose) classroom, textbooks are known as one of the most visible parts of any ESP teaching program. Enjoying an undeniable position, essentially in the societies where English is used as the second or foreign language, such textbooks should have some features on which the needs and objectives of the ESP teaching program are met. Concerning such an importance, this paper intends to evaluate critically the current status of the Iranian ESP textbooks developed and published by The Organization for Research and Compiling University Textbooks in Humanities (SAMT), as the main governmental organization in studying and compiling ESP university textbooks. Obtaining such an end, it tries: (1) to present the importance of ESP materials development; (2) to provide a clear picture of ESP and ESP materials development in Iran; (3) to introduce the essential drawbacks which such textbooks suffer from; and (4) to present some practical suggestions and solutions to tackle the significant problems and drawbacks of the current ESP textbooks practiced in the Iranian academic setting. 展开更多

Acousto ultrasonic input output characteristics for transmitting and receiving contact type transducers coupled to a Timoshenko beam waveguide are considered. By means of a multiple integral transform method and contour integration technique, the spectral response of the normal contact force between the receiving transducer and the wave guide, due to an arbitrary input pulse excited by the transmitting transducer, is expressed as a form of explicitly physical interpretations. Time histories of the response are then obtained through the inversion of the spectra by a fast Fourier transform (FFT) method. Finally, some numerical results are presented in diagrams, from which the effects on the mass of the receiver, the distance between the two transducers, and the input pulse width on the output are discussed. From the numerical calculation and the nature of the whole analysis it is shown that the analytical method presented in this paper is not only effective but also extendible to the more general cases. 展开更多
