A Logistic Regression Model to Predict Graduate Student Matriculation

Higher education institutions invest a significant amount of resources every year to recruit new students.However,higher education administrators have been continuously facing challenges in enrollment management due to the demographic shifts,dramatic increases in educational costs,intense competition among institutions,and the uncertain nature of human selection patterns(Baum,Kurose,&McPherson,2013).[3]Today's post-baccalaureate applicants are more knowledgeable than in previous years,because they can access information on a specific graduate program,in a given college,at any time.As reported in numerous studies,the number of graduate students switching out of their universities continues to be an essential issue.A useful prediction model of matriculation that uses available student data is highly desirable to assist the graduate students with timely advising early in their universities.This study was designed to build a predictive model for the probability that a specific admitted graduate student will matriculate.The results indicated that ten predictive variables were statistically significant at the.05 level.Getting an assistantship made the most substantial positive contribution in predicting student matriculation,followed by FAFSA,experience with the university,campus,degree level,college,gender,age,the number of days between application and admission,and distance to the university.This study's results could be beneficial for improving marketing efforts aimed toward individuals with characteristics most likely to enroll.Administrators could calculate the predictive score(or percentage)for each prospective student based on the predictive model.Marketing efforts could then concentrate on those applicants whose predictive score is high and eliminate the low qualifying students from their recruitment plan.

Students’ perception of effective clinical teaching and teacher behaviour

Learning in the clinical environment is an integral part of nursing education programme. In tertiarybased nursing courses, students spend time learning in the clinical setting as they do in their classroombased studies. The purpose of this study was to explore teaching skills considered by undergraduate student nurses as effective in the clinical setting as well as qualities that make a clinical teacher effective. A descriptive design was employed using questionnaires to collect data. Respondents comprised year four undergraduate student nurses admitted through direct entry (DE) and university matriculation examination (UME) results. Using validated structured questionnaire, data were collected from 101 students who had completed their six months consolidated clinical experience on their perception of teaching skills and teacher qualities considered effective in the clinical setting. Data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Specifically, frequencies, percentage and standard deviation were used for descriptive analysis of scores while chi square and Mann-Whitney tests were used to test the mean differences in the teaching skills and to test whether there was a significant difference in their perception of teacher behaviours respectively at 0.05 level of significance. The result showed that having both clinical (professional) and teaching knowledge were the most important teaching skills for effective clinical teaching. Five qualities ranked by students as teacher behaviours important for effective teaching include being honest with students, motivation to teach, willingness to listen and using good communication skills, supervising students effectively and being positive role model. These factors could be considered when recruiting future clinical teachers and when planning inservice education programmes for clinical teachers to promote student learning.

An Empirical Study for Building a Common Reference Scale of Cando statements of Syntactical Analysis Ability

This study conducts an empirical study of building a common reference scale of Can-do statements of Syntactical AnalysisAbility for NMEE.Studying on language proficiency scale has been done a lot at abroad,but we haven't had a unified English languageproficiency scale in China until now.Without a common reference standard,this leads to many descriptive problems:such as differentdescriptive indexes,vague definition,unclear level and so on.As an important part of English comprehensive ability,syntactical analy-sis ability processes a large proportion of NMEE.Theoretically Based on Bachman's(Communicative Language Ability,CLA) and Dengjie's Discourse Information Cognitive Processing Ability,this study finds that syntactical analysis ability can be described from 38 per-spectives.

Strategy of Improving Graduate Matriculate Quality Under the New Situation

By analyzing the problems existing in graduate enrollment in various colleges and universities,the paper puts forward several measures to improve the graduate matriculate quality combined with graduate matriculate characteristics and selection criterion of talented students.A selection mechanism for graduate students suitable for the objective of talents training in colleges and universities is constructed,which will provide certain theoretical basis for smooth implementation of graduate training objectives and the overall goal of improving the quality of graduate education.
