From the study,... Based on probabilistic fracture mechanics approach, a new concept of material initial fatigue quality (MIFQ) is developed. Then, the relation between S-N curve and crack propagation curve is studied. From the study, a new durability analysis method is presented. In this method, S-N curve is used to determine crack growth rate under constant amplitude loading and evaluate the effects of different factors on durability and then the structural durability is analyzed. The tests and analyses indicate that this method has lower dependence on testing, and higher accuracy, reliability and generality and is convenient for application. 展开更多

In this paper, by capturing the atomic information and reflecting the behaviour governed by the nonlinear potential function, an analytical molecular mechanics approach is proposed. A constitutive relation for single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT's) is established to describe the nonlinear stress-strain curve of SWCNT's and to predict both the elastic properties and breaking strain of SWCNT's during tensile deformation. An analysis based on the virtual internal bond (VIB) model proposed by P. Zhang et al. is also presented for comparison. The results indicate that the proposed molecular mechanics approach is indeed an acceptable analytical method for analyzing the mechanical behavior of SWCNT's. 展开更多

Employing the Pekeris-type approximation to deal with the pseudo-centrifugal term,we analytically study the pseudospin symmetry of a Dirac nucleon subjected to equal scalar and vector modified Rosen-Morse potential including the spin-orbit coupling term by using the Nikiforov-Uvarov method and supersymmetric quantum mechanics approach.The complex eigenvalue equation and the total normalized wave functions expressed in terms of Jacobi polynomial with arbitrary spin-orbit coupling quantum number k are presented under the condition of pseudospin symmetry.The eigenvalue equations for both methods reproduce the same result to affirm the mathematical accuracy of analytical calculations.The numerical solutions obtained for different adjustable parameters produce degeneracies for some quantum number. 展开更多

Hybrid approach for loss recovery mechanism in OBS networks

This letter reports a study of a hybrid burst assembly and a hybrid burst loss recovery scheme (delay-based burst assembly and hybrid loss recovery (DBAHLR)) which selectively employs proactive or reactive loss recovery techniques depending on the classification of traffic into short term and long term, respectively. Traffic prediction and segregation of optical burst switching network flows into the long term and short term are conducted based on predicted link holding times using the hidden Markov model (HMM). The hybrid burst assembly implemented in DBAHLR uses a consecutive average-based burst assembly to handle jitter reduction necessary in real-time applications, with variations in burst sizes due to the non-monotonic nature of the average delay handled by additional burst length thresholding. This dynamic hybrid approach based on HMM prediction provides overall a lower blocking probability and delay and more throughput when compared with forward segment redundancy mechanism or purely HMM prediction-based adaptive burst sizing and wavelength allocation (HMM-TP). 展开更多

In this study,gradual and sudden reduction methods were combined to simulate a progressive failure in notched composite plates using a macro mechanics approach.Using the presented method,a progressive failure is simulated based on a linear softening law prior to a catastrophic failure,and thereafter,sudden reduction methods are employed for modeling a progressive failure.This combination method significantly reduces the computational cost and is also capable of simultaneously predicting the first and last ply failures(LPFs)in composite plates.The proposed method is intended to predict the first ply failure(FPF),LPF,and dominant failure modes of carbon/epoxy and glass/epoxy notched composite plates.In addition,the effects of mechanical properties and different stacking sequences on the propagation of damage in notched composite plates were studied.The results of the presented method were compared with experimental data previously reported in the literature.By comparing the numerical and experimental data,it is revealed that the proposed method can accurately simulate the failure propagation in notched composite plates at a low computational cost. 展开更多

Typically, micro-cracks originate at the bottom of asphalt concrete layer due to horizontal tensile strains. Micro-cracks start to propagate towards the upper layers under repeated loading which can lead to pavement failure. Different methods are usually used to describe fatigue behavior in asphalt materials such as: phenomenological approach, fracture mechanics approach and dissipated energy ap- proach. This paper presents a comparison of fatigue resistances calculated for different dissipated energy models using 2-point bending (2PB) at IFSTTAR in Nantes. 2PB tests have been undertaken under different loading and environmental conditions in order to evaluate the properties of the mixtures (stiffness, dissipated energy, fatigue life and healing effect). 展开更多
