The Impact of English Films and TV Series on Non-English College Students’Intercultural Competence

Based on the related theories of intercultural competence and extensive analysis of literature,this paper employed questionnaires and interviews to do a research with 200 non-English college students about the general situation of their intercultural competence and the impact on it caused by English films and TV series in Wuhan University of Technology.The findings of the study indicate that non-English college students have relatively good intercultural competence while the deficiency of intercultural knowledge and skill exists;the appreciation of English films and TV series is positively correlated with the four dimensions of non-English college students’intercultural competence,namely intercultural knowledge,attitude,skill and awareness.Based on these findings of the research,the author brings up some specific and constructive suggestions on improving non-English college students’intercultural competence with the help of English films and TV series for college English teachers and non-English college students.

A New Breakthrough of Film Propaganda in the Context of New Media-Taking the Hong Kong Film"Shock Wave 2"as an Example

After the release of"Shock Wave 2,"the box office far surpassed the first film"Shock Wave 1."In addition to improving the quality of the narrative content,it is more important to promote the film in the context of new media.Many new breakthroughs have been made.The film combined the advantages of new media in its propaganda orientation and has achieved a better propaganda effect than the traditional propaganda.Therefore,investigating the use of new media in"Shock Wave 2"and in finding places that can be used for reference based on successful experiences,they will have certain enlightenment for further successfill dissemination of Hong Kong police films and even Chinese films in the future.

The Myth of Women’s Fates Under Patriarchal Crisis Control:A Case Study on Heroine’s Characterization in Mid-COVID 19 Chinese TV Series

2018 witnessed some unprecedently strict regulations on national media content production and distribution by the Chinese National Radio and Television Administration(NRTA).On its annual recommended lists of excellent national TV series,there is a noticeable increase in historical series in line with core socialist values.Since late 2019,there has been a strict home-quarantine policy amid the COVID-19 pandemic.Accompanied by the newly introduced three-child birth policy in the context of the country’s low fertility rate and significant ageing,a re-emphasis on traditional Confucian ideologies incented by the Chinese authorities emerged:the primary identity of women being an understanding wife and loving mother.Furthermore,thus,a manifestation of such enforced patriarchal ideologies and cultural values is visible in the country’s strictly regulated media content.This study sets off from a corpus of national recommended TV lists to investigate the myth of women’s fates in amid-pandemic Chinese TV series that are appraised and supported by authorities to explore how their identities are constructed and potentially abused under patriarchal media production.

Powerful Force of The Media to Environmental Issues and Its Contribution to Environmental Engineers

Environmental Engineers are generally unable to proclaim their projects or their engineering solutions against any problem to large masses. Environmental Engineering includes two fundamental approaches： preventing the pollution, and solving the poUution problem after it is arised. Although the first one is preferred, in many developing countries the general tendency is as the solution of pollution after generation. Neither politicians nor public are willing to pay before seeing the threat, although they should be. This conflict decelerates the works to keep the environment and increase the non-success stories and problemmatic situatons. The growing concern in pollution problems gave rise to intensive coverage of the media as one of their main public responsibilities. Because file influence of the media has been regarded as a powerful force in society for many years, the coverage of environmental problems increase the awareness and reduce the resistance against the engineering works. Under these circarnstances this study focuses on the effect of media on public awareness and their participation in the solution of environmental problems. When the journalists are aware of their role in environmental issues, the program will be of high quality and accomplishes the objective, therefore supporting the Environmental Engineers in creating solutions. As a sample, a national Turkish commercial broadcasting company programs were investigated via contents analy sis and discussed.

An Empirical Study of Applying English Films and TV Programs to English-Listening Teaching

This is a study of the feasibility and effects of teaching listening with films and TV programs. The research is a part of the English Learning Program directed by ZHANG Zhen, which is sponsored by Academic Affairs Office of Leshan Normal University. The researcher of the program sought for theretical bases from Krashen＇s Input Hypothesis, the Motivation Theory, the Context Theory, and the Communicative Language Teaching Theory. Then the author introduced a pilot study conducted by utilizing films or TV programs to teach listening from September 2010 till now. The statistic results from the experiment suggest that there is indeed some correlations between teaching listening with films or TV programs and a learner＇s listening comprehension in general in language achievement tests at certain stages. The scores of the students from the experimental group are improved after two years of teaching with the new methods. Analyses and discussions have been done based on a questionnaire and an interview. The results showed that both the teachers and the students had positive attitudes towards teaching listening with films or TV programs. Most of them view this method as an effective way in ELT （English language teaching）, because it provides more opportunities for contextual practice, lower their anxiety; it can also help to motivate them, stimulate their active participation and increase their activities as well. Therefore, this method can be used to cultivate students＇ communicative competence. Consequently, we can draw the conclusion that this method has some advantages over teaching listening with the pre-taped materials in New College English. It may play an important role in ELT, especially in listening teaching. Based on the statistic analyses and the survey, some activities and techniques are provided for the teacher on how to teach listening with films or TV programs. The roles that an English teacher plays in this method are illustrated at the end of the thesis.

The emergence and development of the "fourth media" will become the focal competition power in the subsequent development of the film and television cultural & creative industry.This paper,on the one hand,will illustrate the characteristics of the "fourth media" in the terms of history;on the other hand,it will emphasize that the economic benefits of the traditional media have been replaced by social contact media.The advantages of the "fourth media" are obvious and it will keep developing.We hope that the "fourth media" market in China could improve constantly with strategic vision and integrate into the world market.

Influence of Ti on Microstructure and Magnetic Properties of FePt Granular Films

在室温下,应用对靶直流磁控溅射设备在普通玻璃基片上制备了FePt(30 nm)／Ti(t nm)颗粒膜样品,随后,在真空中进行了原位退火。详细研究了Ti衬底层对FePt颗粒膜的微结构和磁特性的影响。X射线衍射图谱表明样品形成了较有序的L10织构,Ti和FePt形成了三元FePtTi合金。当Ti层厚度t=5 nm、退火温度Ta=500℃时,样品具有高度有序的L10织构、小的颗粒尺寸和优异的磁特性。矫顽力超过了6．7 kOe,饱和磁化强度为620emu／cc。并且具有较小的开关场分布。结果表明FePt／Ti颗粒膜系统可作为超高密度磁记录介质的候选者。

Preparation and magnetic properties of Co-P thin films

Magnetic Co-P thin films were prepared by electroless deposition. The experiment results show that the film thickness has a significant influence on the coercivity. While the film thickness varied from 300 nm to 5 μm,the coercivity dropped sharply from 45.36 to 22.28 kA/m. As the film thickness increased further,the coercivity varied slowly. When the thickness of the film was 300 nm,the deposited film could realize the coercivity as high as 45.36 kA/m,and the remanent magnetization as high as 800 kA/m .The Co-P films were deposited on the surface of magnetic drums of encoders,whose diameter was 40 mm,and then 512 magnetic poles were recorded,meaning that the magnetizing pitch was 0.245 mm. The testing results indicate that the output signals are perfect,the output waveforms are steady and the pulses account is integral. Compared with the γ-Fe2O3 coating,the Co-P thin film is suitable to be the magnetic recording media for the high resolution magnetic rotary encoder.

Design of control adaptability system model for TV media organization structure

To resolve the control adaptability problem of TV media in complex competitive environment, a control system model of TV media organization structure was designed. Based on the designed system model for TV media organization structure, the relations among the main factors of the system constitution, missions, organizing decision entity, and carrying bodies were analyzed. By means of applying multi-objective decision method and complex control system theory, and combining the integration model of TV media organization structure, the basic model was concluded and the corresponding parameters were designed. The current organization process of TV media is analyzed by this model, which comes to the adaptability appearance with different parameters. The results indicate that the model can estimate current TV media organization structure for the chain appearance of communications and the correlation between platforms and policy-making agencies.

The diffusion of Hong Kong cultural values to China's Mainland: a case study in Shenzhen

s—Since Shenzhen became a special economic zone in 1980, it has achieved spectacular growth in its economy. At the same time, it has opened its door to the importation of foreign goods and cultures,particularly from its neighboring city,Hong Kong.Nowadays,Hong Kong cultural traits, including materialism, individualism, and the idolization of movie stars and pop singers have become well accepted and commonly followed by the people in Shenzhen. This paper looks into the role of mass communication, particularly television programs, in this process of cultural diffusion, and to assess the cause and effect of such changes on Shenzhen.

Effect of additional element and heat treating temperature on micro-structure and mechanical behavior of Ag alloy thin film

For Ag alloy film used for the storage media, it is required to have heat-resistance, anti-constant temperature and anti-constant humidity characteristics, corrosion resistance, while high reflectivity over Al is maintained. An Ag alloy thin film (additive element Pd, Cu, P) was created on glass substrates, and various heat treatment was conducted. Then, fine structure was observed on this thin film using AFM, and fine structure evaluation of the inside was carried out by the in-plane diffractometry and X-ray diffractometry, and in addition, residual stress analysis was carried out. These results were compared and were examined, and fine structure and physical property in a metallic thin film were evaluated, and usefulness of evaluation method was verified.

Post Sherlockian Times——Research into the Adaptations of the Novel Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes, the literary image that Arthur Conan Doyle created in The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes, has undoubtedly become an iconic figure of detective. For over a century, a number of films and TV series which based on this book are countless, Sherlock Holmes has been brought to silver screen and stage for a million times. It will be mentioned Arthur Conan and Sherlock Holmes in his book at first, and then review a list of Sherlock Holmes' adaptations in the history. Secondly, showing different personalities of this figure, taking film and TV dramas adaptation as examples to compare with the original novel,from which we can discover different perspectives of this image of Sherlock Holmes. At last, it emphasizes through the ages, literary works have always been materials for films and TV programs creation. From the everlasting image of Sherlock Holmes, we can see that literary spirits in classic masterpieces can be spread and flourished through adaptation of films and TV programs.

The Relationship Between Exposure to Televised Violence and Malaysian Adolescents＇ Aggressive Behaviours＂ A Structural Equation Modelling Analysis

Previous studies on the relationship between exPosure to televised violence and viewers＇ aggressive behaviours have produced mixed results. Some studies have found significant effect sizes while others have found low and non-significant effect sizes. Television effects scholars have postulated that these mixed results are caused by the inconsistencies of research methodology employed and the inability to control major mediating variables in the studies. The present study is designed with the objectives to overcome these shortcomings. The respondents for this study were 514 students aged between 13 and 18 from 10 schools in the State of Perak, Malaysia. Exploratory data analyses provided evidence that the employed instruments achieved sound psychometric properties. Hypotheses testing suggested that exposure to the Contents of Television Violence （TVCN） did not have a direct relationship with adolescents＇ aggressive behaviours; instead, Contextual Features of Television Violence （TVCX） totally mediated this relationship. Some other mediating variables then mediated totally and some mediated partially the relationship between TVCX and adolescents＇ aggressive behaviours. To conclude, this study provides valuable information for parents, the television industry, and the policy makers in recognizing pro-violent and anti-violent features of television violence programmes for Malaysian school-going adolescents. It also provides a new perspective for future studies of television violence in Malaysia.

Intercultural Communication and Mutual Learning Focusing on Light and Shadow——Taking the movie Coco as an example

This article analyzes the main elements of intercultural communication of films based on the five elements of communication,taking the movie Coco as an example.It states that in the modern global world,all countries should continuously promote cultural communication and mutual learning,consolidate the humanism of the community of common destiny,and promote the progress of the society.Meanwhile,we need to make full use of new media to continuously explore new methods and new forms of intercultural communication;we need to strengthen cultural confidence and take diffusing our national culture as our duty;we need to strengthen researches on intercultural communication,resolve cultural differences,and better achieve our localized national culture.

A Political Aspect of the Korean Wave in Taiwan

Studies of the Korean Wave in Taiwan have construed the genesis of the Wave as either accidental, evitable, or taken it for granted. Problematising the genesis of the Korean Wave in Taiwan, the paper proposes to see it as the product of social and political forces pertaining to a specific moment of history of Taiwan. Other than deeming the genesis categorically as a cultural instance, it argues that the Wave is in effect the production manufactured at the convergence of social political changes at a historical moment unprecedented in Taiwan history. To respond to the new social and political conditions, the Korean Wave is deliberately appropriated as the extension of social institution and political control for the purpose of prolonging class interests of the traditional rulers. By means of mammoth circulation and transmission of print media and television broadcast, the Wave is immediately called into being and captivates a throng of Taiwan Residents audience. In return, the overwhelming popularity of Korean TV dramas is capitalized on politically besides socially and culturally in order to meet new needs. Resiting the Korean Wave in Taiwan in the social and political processes at the specific moment of Taiwan history, its genesis is thereby complicated and overdetermined on top of the advanced and promised drama qualities and productions. Inevitably a limited view, however, the paper is hoped to provide an alternative aspect to the studies of the Korean Wave either in Taiwan or other regions.
