House price expectations(HPE)is a key factor affecting housing market fluctuations.Taking Beijing as an example, this study innovatively proposes an internet data-based measurement of HPE and text analysis-based quantification of media reports from media attention and media attitudes.Regression model is performed to empirically test the impact of media reports on the level and accuracy of HPE.The empirical results show no significant relationship between media attention and the level of HPE,but a significant relationship to the accuracy of HPE.The higher the media attention(i.e.,the more intensive the media reports),the smaller the deviation between HPE and actual housing prices. The attitude of media reports is significantly related to the level and accuracy of HPE.It is easier to guide the formation of HPE through media reports with clear opinions, indicating that media could promote the sustainable development of the real estate market. 展开更多

Information monopoly of bureaucrats helps them maximize discretionary budget. Public disclosure of budget can alleviate information asymmetry between government and the public and empower public supervision on government budget. With information intermediary function and reputational governance function, the media exert a budget intervention effect in the public disclosure of government budget, which further increases the effect of government budget disclosure. This paper investigates how media reports influence "three public expenses"(TPE) budget planning of central government departments by examining media reports on the disclosure of budget and final accounts and using TPE budget as a proxy variable for discretionary budget of bureaucrats. We have reached the following findings:(1) The higher the TPE budget implementation rate, the greater budget growth will be. But this correlation can be restrained by media attention;(2) Different stance of the media may exert different governance effects on TPE budget. Good news about TPE may motivate bureaucrats to restrain the positive impact of TPE budget implementation on budget growth. However, bad news about TPE will exert its budget intervention effect only when administrative governance mechanism intervenes. This study has broadened research on the media's governance effect from the perspective of government budget transparency and verified that under China's unique institutional background, the media may still play a positive role in public sector governance. 展开更多

Disaster information content is an objective mapping of disaster situations, social response, and public opinions.Social response to emergency is an important mechanism for implementing and guaranteeing emergency management of major natural hazard-related disasters.Understanding how disaster information content affects social response to emergencies is helpful for managing risk communication and efficient disaster response.Based on the 2008 freezing-rain and snowstorm disasters in southern China, this study used Python to extract 7,857 case-related media reports and applied natural language processing for text analysis. It used three typical cases to identify and analyze disaster media report content and the relationship between these reports and the social response to the emergency.Eight categories of disaster response-such as prewarning and forecasting, announcements by the authorities, and social mobilization-appeared in the disaster information in the media, along with disaster impact information, that is,real-time disaster status.Disaster response information and an appropriate amount of disaster impact information played important roles in prewarning, disaster relief, public opinion guidance, and social stability maintenance and can serve important functions in communicating with all stakeholders of emergency management, assisting or influencing emergency departments or individuals in decision making, and eliminating "information islands." Empathy caused the general public to become "disaster responders" through receiving information.Rumors and an excess of negative information may have a perverse amplification effect on public opinion and increase the unpredictability of the disaster situation and the risk of social crisis. 展开更多
