A Corpus-Based Study on Grammaticalization and Lexicalization in Medical English

Medical English,as a specialized form of English,has attracted considerable attention due to its unique linguistic features.Grammaticalization and lexicalization represent critical mechanisms in the evolution of language and are essential for understanding and mastering medical English.This study,drawing on the MEDLINE corpus,investigates the characteristics of grammaticalization and lexicalization in medical English from the perspective of cognitive linguistics,aiming to unveil its underlying cognitive foundations.The findings suggest that the processes of grammaticalization and lexicalization in medical English reflect cognitive mechanisms such as categorization,inferential processing,and pragmatic strategies.These insights provide novel approaches and methodologies for the teaching of medical English.

Analysis of Common Mistakes in English Abstract Writing of Scientific and Technological Papers:A Case Study of Automotive Practical Technology

Abstract is the epitome of the core idea of a journal paper.Excellent English abstract plays an important role in ensuring the quality of the paper and promoting its academic value in international exchanges.However,there are still many problems in the English abstracts of many papers published in academic journals.This paper analyzes and summarizes the grammatical errors of articles,singular and plural nouns,predicate verbs,conjunctions,Chinglish from other English abstracts of some papers in a vehicle engineering academic journal retrieved from CNCN.cn,and then corrects them.It is expected to provide some guidance for editors,academic workers,and engineering students in writing papers.

Exploring and Practicing a Teaching Model of Dialogue-scene Simulation in Medical English

Practicing dialogue-scene simulation in medical English can integrate effectively learning resources, activate the class atmosphere, enrich contents of courses, train language skills and raise students' cooperated consciousness.Furthermore,practicing dialogue-scene simulation can promote reform of teaching estimation-model, teaching quality and efficiency. In a word, practicing dialogue-scene simulation deserves further exploration and promotion.

Some Suggestions for a Core Syllabus for Teaching Medical English

There seems to be a lack of clear, explicit core orientation in many texts for leamers of medical English. This article presents some propositions for such an orientation, and five tools to be used in that context, which may be useful both in learning medicine and in reducing the risks of diagnostic errors.

The past several decades have seen tremendous advances in ESP translation.In the field of medicine,the perpetual expansion of science and technology necessitates unprecedented worldwide academic cooperation and communication.By combining the features of medical English and Eugene Nida's translation theory of functional equivalence,the author proposed specific criteria for medical translation to help teachers of medical English to improve their teaching and translators to produce high quality translation.

A Study of Blended-teaching Model in Medical English

A Study on the Flipped Class Mode of Medical English Reading Based on WeChat Platform

This article aims to introduce the design concept and implementation methods of the flipped class of medical English reading based on We Chat platform in order to explore problems and solutions existing in the teaching. Based on typical characteristics of the flipped class, college students' addiction for smartphones and the appropriateness and convenience of We Chat, it is implemented with the help of We Chat. It can be divided into three steps to implement: pre-class, in-class and post-class. However, to a certain extent, this kind of teaching mode is limited by students' self-consciousness, enthusiasm, language foundation,self-learning ability and teachers' guidance. Focusing on the above problems, the author gives the relevant solutions.

The Application of Corpus-based Teaching Approach to Medical English Vocabulary

Insufficient vocabulary has become a barrier to reading comprehension and translation in the process of ME (medical English) study to the third-year students at medical universities or colleges. The current study was designed to investigate corpus-based teaching ap-proach to enlarging students'vocabulary in the course of higher learning of ML (medical literature). The study was carried out from 2006.9 to 2008.9 among third-year medical students in our college. Students were encouraged to augment their vocabulary by active practice,intensive learning,and comprehensive learning respectively through discovering study by using self-made ME corpuses (90,000 words). In doing so,their vocabulary was enlarged by actively using the essential vocabulary,attaching more attention to the difficult technical vocabulary,and getting familiar with medical terms,which eliminated their language barrier,improved their integrated language proficiency,and developed their sense of achievement.

A genre analysis of medical abstracts by Chinese and English native speakers

This study presents statistical results of a comparison between English abstracts in a leading intemational medical journal and those in a Chinese one. With a genre analysis and discussion of linguistic features of these abstracts, the paper points out the weak points in the abstracts by Chinese writers and provides some suggestions for writing abstracts of medical research articles

Teacher＇s role in teaching English for Medical Purposes （EMP）

This paper has addressed key notions about ESP and examined issues in ESP curriculum design. The content of the paper was determined by a need identified based on author＇s professional experience as an EMP instructor designing and delivering the content-based language lessons--language preparation for Doctoral Degree Applicants in medicine. The author believes that in English class teachers should adopt a student-centered approach, have some knowledge of the special subjects and choose appropriate materials that fit all medical students. This approach has achieved satisfactory result in helping students know about the latest breakthroughs in biomedical fields, communicate with colleagues of other countries and contribute to foreign medical journals.

The Way to Improve the Teaching Quality of the Special English Curriculum for Medical Laboratory Science

Phenomenon: Nowadays, with rapidly developing in medical laboratory science(MLS), new concepts, knowledge and technologies are constantly emerging, which requires medical students to continuously learn to grasp the new development trend and the latest research progress. To enable the students to learn and make use of scientific knowledge better, the Special English Curriculum for MLS has been set up, which is very important to non-English-speaking students. However, there are many problems in the course of teaching, so the improved teaching quality of the curriculum is in demand. Approach: In this paper these problems are described and the corresponding advices are proposed from the perspectives of staff room, teachers and students, which are supposed to develop the curriculum for education of the medical laboratory scientists. Findings: To improve the teaching quality of the Special English Curriculum for MLS, the textbook should be appropriately selected or compiled, the novel teaching methods can be applied, and the modern multimedia teaching materials can be adopted.The teachers of the curriculum should be proficient in professional knowledge, English as well as the systematic and scientific teaching methods. The students need to have the courage and determination to overcome the difficulties when they learn the curriculum, and the students who have not did well in their lessons should learn to study by themselves. Insights: The Special English Curriculum for MLS is very important to non-English-speaking students and is kind of difficult for them, the staff room, teachers and students should adjust themselves to teach and learn the curriculum better.

The Training of Clinical English Learning Ability of Medical Students

Through investigation and research,this paper analyzes the needs and status quo of medical students’English learning,and makes a correlation analysis between them.This paper uses the strategy of questionnaire survey and take the actual medicalstudents in our country as the survey object,and uses two-dimensional model of Oxford and three-dimensional model of O’Malleyand Chamot statistical method to get the final conclusion.The results show that the high score group students show stronger internallearning motivation,the choice of cognitive strategies shows a strong sense of autonomy and responsibility,while the low score stu-dents mainly show external learning motivation,in the specific learning process,they rely more on mechanical imitation and ignorethe cultivation of creative thinking.

On Characteristics and Translation of Medical English

English has become a necessary tool in various medical academic conferences.The mastery of characteristics of medical English and adequate translating skills,therefore,is guarantee for medical students and workers,so that they can read and translate medical literature extensively,express source literature accurately,realize the newest development of medicine,and inspire thinking and creation.It firstly introduces international demands and the significance of medical English,then analyzes the features of it,and finally discusses how to concretely translate medical English into Chinese with basic principles of"fidelity"and"expressiveness",aiming at providing some reference in medical English translation.

Move-Step Structure of the Introduction Section of English Medical Science Research Articles Written by Chinese Researchers Published in International Journals

In the past decades,a number of researchers have tried hard to identify the move-step structure of different sections in research articles(RAs)from various disciplines.However,there is a very few amount of previous studies conducted on the move-step structure of the Introduction section of English medical science research articles(MSRAs)written by Chinese researchers published in international journals.In order to fill this gap,the present study aims to identify the moves,steps,and their structure of the Introduction section of English MSRAs written by Chinese researchers at Zunyi Medical University(ZMU)published in international journals.To create the target corpus of the present study,30 Introductions were purposively selected from 25 international medical science journals,which were published from 2007 to 2015.It is worth noting that all the authors are restricted to Chinese researchers only and at least one author must come from ZMU.The framework of Kanoksilapatham’s(2005)was adopted for the move-step analysis in the present study.The results demonstrated that these Introduction sections were generally written with three moves following the selected framework.In addition,there were two new steps that occurred in the Introduction section of these English MSRAs.In conclusion,the findings of the present study might provide a guideline for the research who plan to write English MSRAs for international articles more effectively.Moreover,the findings may provide valuable information for academic writing textbook designers as well.

Validity Study on the Test Paper of the Academic English Reading and Writing Course

The aim of this study is to conduct the validity analysis of the test paper of the academic English reading and writing course referring to the freshmen of non-English majors in a university of Technology in Shanghai.The validity is mainly analyzed from these three aspects:the content and construct validity,the reaction process,and the internal structure of the test paper.And the principles of language assessment in the design of the test paper are given in this study.The validity study was also conducted in a class with 42 freshmen,and the scores of them were analyzed through the internal correlation coefficient from Statistic Package for Social Science(SPSS)25.0.Finally,the validity of the test paper is concluded.

Statistical Analyses for Quality of English Grammar Paper

Context Theory have been extensively used in the teaching of minority English majors. Meanwhile, teachers of English in China have been inevitably involved in language testing of various types, either to choose an appropriate existing language test or design by themselves. Therefore it is of practical significance to testify whether the course taken under the Context Theory has enabled teachers to become competent in the design, development, and use of language tests. The main purpose of the present study is to analyze the quality of English grammar paper to check whether minority English majors' management of English grammar have been improved.
