Understanding the steady mechanism of biomass smoldering plays a great role in the utilization of smoldering technology. In this study numerical analysis of steady smoldering of biomass rods was performed.A two-dimensional(2D)steady model taking into account both char oxidation and pyrolysis was developed on the basis of a calculated propagation velocity according to empirical correlation. The model was validated against the smoldering experiment of biomass rods under natural conditions, and the maximum error was smaller than 31%.Parameter sensitivity analysis found that propagation velocity decreases significantly while oxidation area and pyrolysis zone increase significantly with the increasing diameter of rod fuel. 展开更多

The utilization of prefabricated light modular radiant heating system has demonstrated significant increases in heat transfer efficiency and energy conservation capabilities.Within prefabricated building construction, this new heating method presents an opportunity for the development of comprehensive facilities. The parameters for evaluating the effectiveness of such a system are the upper surface layer’s heat flux and temperature. In this paper, thermal resistance analysis calculation based on a simplified model for this unique radiant heating system analysis is presented with the heat transfer mechanism’s evaluation. The results obtained from thermal resistance analysis calculation and numerical simulation indicate that the thermal resistance analysis method is highly accurate with temperature discrepancies ranging from 0.44℃ to−0.44℃ and a heat flux discrepancy of less than 7.54%,which can meet the requirements of practical engineering applications, suggesting a foundation for the prefabricated radiant heating system. 展开更多

Matrix swelling effect will cause the change of microstructure of coal reservoir and its permeability, which is the key factor affecting the engineering effect of CO_(2)-ECBM technology. The Sihe and Yuwu collieries are taken as research objects.Firstly, visualization reconstruction of coal reservoir is realized.Secondly, the evolution of the pore/fracture structures under different swelling contents is discussed. Then, the influence of matrix phase with different swelling contents on permeability is discussed. Finally, the mechanism of swelling effect during the CO_(2)-ECBM process is further discussed. The results show that the intra-matrix pores and matrix-edge fractures are the focus of this study, and the contacting area between matrix and pore/fracture is the core area of matrix swelling. The number of matrix particles decreases with the increase of size, and the distribution of which is isolated with small size and interconnected with large size. The swelling effect of matrix particles with larger size has a great influence on the pore/fracture structures. The number of connected pores/fractures is limited and only interconnected in a certain direction. With the increase of matrix swelling content, the number, porosity, width, fractal dimension, surface area and volume of pores/fractures decrease, and their negative contribution to absolute permeability increases from 0.368% to 0.633% and 0.868%-1.404%,respectively.With the increase of swelling content, the number of intra-matrix pores gradually decreases and the pore radius becomes shorter during the CO_(2)-ECBM process. The matrix continuously expands to the connected fractures, and the width of connected fractures gradually shorten.Under the influence of matrix swelling, the bending degree of fluid flow increases gradually,so the resistance of fluid migration increases and the permeability gradually decreases. This study shows that the matrix swelling effect is the key factor affecting CBM recovery, and the application of this effect in CO_(2)-ECBM process can be discussed. 展开更多

The human immunodeficiency viruses are two species of Lentivirus that infect humans.Over time, they cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome,a condition in which progressive immune system failure allows life-threatening opportunistic infections and cancers to thrive.Human immunodeficiency virus infection came from a type of chimpanzee in Central Africa.Studies show that immunodeficiency viruses may have jumped from chimpanzees to humans as far back as the late 1800s.Over decades, human immunodeficiency viruses slowly spread across Africa and later into other parts of the world. The Susceptible-Infected-Recovered(SIR)models are significant in studying disease dynamics. In this paper,we have studied the effect of irresponsible immigrants on HIV/AIDS dynamics by formulating and considering different methods.Euler,Runge Kutta, and a Non-standardfinite difference(NSFD)method are developed for the same problem.Numerical experiments are performed at disease-free and endemic equilibria points at different time step sizes‘ℎ’.The results reveal that, unlike Euler and Runge Kutta, which fail for large time step sizes, the proposed Non-standardfinite difference(NSFD)method gives a convergence solution for any time step size. Our proposed numerical method is bounded, dynamically con-sistent,and preserves the positivity of the continuous solution, which are essential requirements when modeling a prevalent disease. 展开更多

According to the innate characteristic of four types of furnace, the copper flash continuous smelting (CFCS) furnace can be considered a synthetic reactor of two relatively independent processes: flash matte smelting process (FMSP) and copper continuous converting process (CCCP). Then, the CFCS thermodynamic model was proposed by establishing the multi-phase equilibrium model of FMSP and the local-equilibrium model of CCCP, respectively, and by combining them through the smelting intermediates. Subsequently, the influences of the furnace structures were investigated using the model on the formation of blister copper, the Fe3O4 behavior, the copper loss in slag and the copper recovery rate. The results show that the type D furnace, with double flues and a slag partition wall, is an ideal CFCS reactor compared with the other three types furnaces. For CFCS, it is effective to design a partition wall in the furnace to make FMSP and CCCP perform in two relatively independent zones, respectively, and to make smelting gas and converting gas discharge from respective flues. 展开更多

The surrounding rock of roadways exhibits intricate characteristics of discontinuity and heterogeneity. To address these complexities, this study employs non-local Peridynamics(PD)theory and reconstructs the kernel function to represent accurately the spatial decline of long-range force.Additionally, modifications to the traditional bondbased PD model are made.By considering the micro-structure of coal-rock materials within a uniform discrete model, heterogeneity characterized by bond random pre-breaking is introduced. This approach facilitates the proposal of a novel model capable of handling the random distribution characteristics of material heterogeneity, rendering the PD model suitable for analyzing the deformation and failure of heterogeneous layered coal-rock mass structures. The established numerical model and simulation method, termed the sub-homogeneous PD model, not only incorporates the support effect but also captures accurately the random heterogeneous micro-structure of roadway surrounding rock. The simulation results obtained using this model show good agreement with field measurements from the Fucun coal mine, effectively validating the model’s capability in accurately reproducing the deformation and failure mode of surrounding rock under bolt-supported(anchor cable). The proposed subhomogeneous PD model presents a valuable and effective simulation tool for studying the deformation and failure of roadway surrounding rock in coal mines, offering new insights and potential advancements. 展开更多

This study focuses on the urgent requirement for improved accuracy in diseasemodeling by introducing a newcomputational framework called the Hybrid SIR-Fuzzy Model.By integrating the traditional Susceptible-Infectious-Recovered(SIR)modelwith fuzzy logic, ourmethod effectively addresses the complex nature of epidemic dynamics by accurately accounting for uncertainties and imprecisions in both data and model parameters. The main aim of this research is to provide a model for disease transmission using fuzzy theory, which can successfully address uncertainty in mathematical modeling. Our main emphasis is on the imprecise transmission rate parameter, utilizing a three-part description of its membership level. This enhances the representation of disease processes with greater complexity and tackles the difficulties related to quantifying uncertainty in mathematical models. We investigate equilibrium points for three separate scenarios and perform a comprehensive sensitivity analysis, providing insight into the complex correlation betweenmodel parameters and epidemic results. In order to facilitate a quantitative analysis of the fuzzy model,we propose the implementation of a resilient numerical scheme. The convergence study of the scheme demonstrates its trustworthiness, providing a conditionally positive solution, which represents a significant improvement compared to current forward Euler schemes. The numerical findings demonstrate themodel’s effectiveness in accurately representing the dynamics of disease transmission.Significantly, when the mortality coefficient rises, both the susceptible and infected populations decrease, highlighting the model’s sensitivity to important epidemiological factors. Moreover, there is a direct relationship between higher Holling type rate values and a decrease in the number of individuals who are infected,as well as an increase in the number of susceptible individuals. This correlation offers a significant understanding of how many elements affect the consequences of an epidemic. Our objective is to enhance decision-making in public health by providing a thorough quantitative analysis of the Hybrid SIR-Fuzzy Model. Our approach not only tackles the existing constraints in disease modeling, but also paves the way for additional investigation, providing a vital instrument for researchers and policymakers alike. 展开更多

Almost all sandstone reservoirs contain interlayers. The identification and characterization of these interlayers iscritical for minimizing the uncertainty associated with oilfield development and improving oil and gas recovery.Identifying interlayers outside wells using identification methods based on logging data and machine learning isdifficult and seismic-based identification techniques are expensive. Herein, a numerical model based on seepageand well-testing theories is introduced to identify interlayers using transient pressure data. The proposed modelrelies on the open-source MATLAB Reservoir Simulation Toolbox. The effects of the interlayer thickness, position, and width on the pressure response are thoroughly investigated. A procedure for inverting interlayer parametersin the reservoir using the bottom-hole pressure is also proposed. This method uses only transient pressuredata during well testing and can effectively identify the interlayer distribution near the wellbore at an extremelylow cost. The reliability of the model is verified using effective oilfield examples. 展开更多

The viscous fluid flow and heat transfer over a stretching(shrinking)and porous sheets of nonuniform thickness are investigated in this paper. The modeled problem is presented by utilizing the stretching(shrinking)and porous velocities and variable thickness of the sheet and they are combined in a relation.Consequently, the new problem reproduces the different available forms of flow motion and heat transfer maintained over a stretching(shrinking)and porous sheet of variable thickness in one go.As a result, the governing equations are embedded in several parameters which can be transformed into classical cases of stretched(shrunk)flows over porous sheets.A set of general, unusual and new variables is formed to simplify the governing partial differential equations and boundary conditions. The final equations are compared with the classical models to get the validity of the current simulations and they are exactly matched with each other for different choices of parameters of the current problem when their values are properly adjusted and manipulated. Moreover,we have recovered the classical results for special and appropriate values of the parameters(δ_(1),δ_(2),δ_(3),c,and B).The individual and combined effects of all inputs from the boundary are seen on flow and heat transfer properties with the help of a numerical method and the results are compared with classical solutions in special cases. It is noteworthy that the problem describes and enhances the behavior of all field quantities in view of the governing parameters.Numerical result shows that the dual solutions can be found for different possible values of the shrinking parameter.A stability analysis is accomplished and apprehended in order to establish a criterion for the determinations of linearly stable and physically compatible solutions. The significant features and diversity of the modeled equations are scrutinized by recovering the previous problems of fluid flow and heat transfer from a uniformly heated sheet of variable(uniform)thickness with variable(uniform)stretching/shrinking and injection/suction velocities. 展开更多

Multistage multi-cluster hydraulic fracturing has enabled the economic exploitation of shale reservoirs, but the interpretation of hydraulic fracture parameters is challenging. The pressure signals after pump shutdown are influenced by hydraulic fractures, which can reflect the geometric features of hydraulic fracture. The shutdown pressure can be used to interpret the hydraulic fracture parameters in a real-time and cost-effective manner. In this paper,a mathematical model for shutdown pressure evolution is developed considering the effects of wellbore friction, perforation friction and fluid loss in fractures. An efficient numerical simulation method is established by using the method of characteristics.Based on this method, the impacts of fracture half-length,fracture height, opened cluster and perforation number, and filtration coefficient on the evolution of shutdown pressure are analyzed. The results indicate that a larger fracture half-length may hasten the decay of shutdown pressure, while a larger fracture height can slow down the decay of shutdown pressure.A smaller number of opened clusters and perforations can significantly increase the perforation friction and decrease the overall level of shutdown pressure.A larger filtration coefficient may accelerate the fluid filtration in the fracture and hasten the drop of the shutdown pressure. The simulation method of shutdown pressure,as well as the analysis results, has important implications for the interpretation of hydraulic fracture parameters. 展开更多

These joints are mostly made up of structural steel. These joints can withstand yield, buckling, and lateral loads depending on the structure’s design and environment. In this study, the Finite Element Model of the KK-type tubular joint has been created, and analysis has been performed under static loading using the Static Structural analysis system of ANSYS 19.2 commercial software and structural mechanics module of COMSOL Multiphysics. The KK tubular model is analyzed under compressive load conditions, and the resulting stress, strain, and deformation values are tabulated in both graphical and tabular form. This study includes a comparison of the outcomes from both commercial software. The results highlight that maximum stress, strain, and deformation values decrease as joint thickness increases. The cut-off wall in a clay-core rockfill dam built on a thick overburden layer is subjected to a large compressive pressure under the action of the loads such as the dead weight of both the dam and the overburden layer, the frictional force induced by the differential settlement between the cut-off wall and surrounding soils, and the water pressure. Thus, reduction of the stress of the cut-off wall has become one of the main problems for consideration in engineering design. In this paper, numerical analysis of a core rockfill dam built on a thick overburden layer was conducted and some factors influencing the stress-strain behaviors of the cut-off wall were investigated. The factors include the improvement of the overburden layer, the modeling approach for interfacial contact between the cut-off wall and surrounding soils, the modulus of the cut-off wall concrete, and the connected pattern between the cut-off wall and the clay core. The result shows that improving the overburden layer, selecting plastic concrete with a low modulus and high strength, and optimizing the connection between the cut-off wall and the clay core of the dam are effective measures of reducing the deformations and compressive stresses of the cut-off wall. In addition, both the Goodman element and the mud-layer element are suitable for simulating the interfacial contact between the cut-off wall and surrounding soils. 展开更多

A dry-gas seal system is a non-contact seal technology that is widely used in different industrial applications.Spiral-groove dry-gas seal utilizes fluid dynamic pressure effects to realize the seal and lubrication processes, while forming a high pressure gas film between two sealing faces due to the deceleration of the gas pumped in or out. There is little research into the effects and the influence on seal performance,if the grooves and the gas film are at the micro-scale.This paper investigates the micro-scale effects on spiral-groove dry-gas seal performance in a numerical solution of a corrected Reynolds equation. The Reynolds equation is discretized by means of the finite difference method with the second order scheme and solved by the successive-over-relaxation(SOR) iterative method. The Knudsen number of the flow in the sealing gas film is changed from 0.005 to 0.120 with a variation of film depth and sealing pressure. The numerical results show that the average pressure in the gas film and the sealed gas leakage increase due to micro-scale effects. The open force is enlarged, while the gas film stiffness is significantly decreased due to micro-scale effects. The friction torque and power consumption remain constant, even in low sealing pressure and spin speed conditions. In this paper, the seal performance at different rotor face spin speeds is also described. The proposed research clarifies the micro-scale effects in a spiral-groove dry-gas seal and their influence on seal performance, which is expected to be useful for the improvement of the design of dry-gas seal systems operating in the slip flow regime. 展开更多

The Westwood Mine aims to reuse the tailings storage facility #1(TSF #1) for solid waste storage, but, downstream of the Northwest dike is considered critical in terms of stability. This paper uses numerical modeling along with geophysical monitoring for assessing the Northwest dike stability during the restoration phase. The impact of waste rock deposition in the upstream TSF #1 is considered. The geophysical monitoring is based on electrical resistivity methods and was used to investigate the internal structure of the dike embankment in different deposition stages. The numerical simulations were performed with SLOPE/W code. The results show a factor of safety well above the minimum recommended value of 1.5. Geophysical monitoring revealed a vertical variation in the electrical resistivity across the dike, which indicates a multilayer structure of the embankment. Without any current in situ data, the geophysical monitoring helped estimating the nature of the materials used and the internal structure of the embankment. These interpretations were validated by geological observation of geotechnical log of the embankment. Based on this study, it is recommended that the water polishing pond be partly filled before waste rock is deposited in TSF #1. In addition, to ensure the stability of the dike, the piezometric head monitoring prior to and during waste rock deposition is recommended. 展开更多

Tunnelling related hazards are very common in the Himalayan terrain and a number of such instances have been reported. Several twin tunnels are being planned for transportation purposes which will require good understanding for prediction of tunnel deformation and surface settlement during the engineering life of the structure. The deformational behaviour, design of sequential excavation and support of any jointed rock mass are challenging during underground construction. We have raised several commonly assumed issues while performing stability analysis of underground opening at shallow depth. For this purpose, Kainchi-mod Nerchowck twin tunnels(Himachal Pradesh, India) are taken for in-depth analysis of the stability of two asymmetric tunnels to address the influence of topography, twin tunnel dimension and geometry. The host rock encountered during excavation is composed mainly of moderately to highly jointed grey sandstone, maroon sandstone and siltstones. In contrast to equidimensional tunnels where the maximum subsidence is observed vertically above the centreline of the tunnel, the result from the present study shows shifting of the maximum subsidence away from the tunnel centreline. The maximum subsidence of 0.99 mm is observed at 4.54 m left to the escape tunnel centreline whereas the maximum subsidence of 3.14 mm is observed at 8.89 m right to the main tunnel centreline. This shifting clearly indicates the influence of undulating topography and inequidimensional noncircular tunnel. 展开更多

The significant point is the bidirectional interaction technique in FSI analysis while investigating subsea corrosion effect. By this way, pipe environment is accurately modelled and fluid effects are also considered. The effect of external corrosion defects on structural behaviour of a pipeline is studied by creating a nonlinear numerical model based on the finite element method according to ABAQUS analysis program. Corrosion losses of sections are obtained from experimental results and applied to the model. Numerical model is formed by a span of sub-sea pipeline that is subjected to environmental loads. Seismic and wind-generated irregular wave loads are considered as environmental loads. Irregular wave is represented with equivalent eight regular waves via FFT. The pipe is modelled according to two different types which are non-corroded(intact) and corroded(deteriorated) to demonstrate corrosion effects on it. The visible type of corrosion in marine environment is named ‘pitting' corrosion, in which the material loss is locally interpenetrated over the surface. By considering this situation, the corroded and non-corroded pipes are modelled as 3D solid elements. The main point is revealing how the subsea corrosion affects the structural behaviour of pipelines on the basis of implementation of experimental results to a model structure due to changes of stresses and displacement. 展开更多
