As one of the most exciting inspection and powerful analysis methods in modern materials metallographic examinations, the difference interference contrast (DIC) method has many advantages, including relatively low requirement for specimen preparation, obvious relief senses observed under microscope. Details such as fine structures or defects that are not or barely visible in incident-light bright field, could be easily revealed and thus make materials analysis more reliable. Differential interference contrast produces an image that can be readily manipulated using digital and video imaging techniques to further enhance contrast. But, studies of material metallography based on DIC method have rarely carried out. Based on the fundamental principle of the DIC method combing with the computer image analysis, applications of DIC method in materials metallographic examination were investigated in this study. 展开更多

In this paper, an in situ metallographic video system was used to study the morphology in Cu-Zn-Al shape memory alloy (SMA) during thermal cycling phase tmnsforma-tion. There are seven different types of martensite morphology in Cu-Zn-Al SMA,i.e. plate, spean bamboo, noose, round-spot, line and dot-like martensites. During transformation and inverse-transformation, the thermoelastic martensites were rising and falling, growing and shrinking, splitting and merping. The growth patterns of thermoelastic martensite were divided into three types: fast growing, very slow ex-pansion and uniform automatic growth. Automatic growth appeared when ageing at a temperature below Ms. The result, for the first time, coofirmed Olson and Cohen,s suggestion that thermoelastic martensite may be automatically grown when ageing be-low Ms. With increasing numbers of thermal cycling, both the memory recovery ratio (% )and memory recoverp degradation (%) degraded logarithmically. The degrada-tion was steep in the initial stage and then became more and more gradual in the middle and the final stages caused by the stabilisation of martensite. In the initial stage, vacancies assumed the controlling role, while dislocations took the major role in other stages. The martensite transformation caused the intedeces to become bent and blurmd, but with increasing cycling numbers, the movements of interface had the same degradation effects as the memory recovery ratio curves. Under these conditions, we also found the martensites on one side of the intedece became reorientated and par-allel to the intedece. It was therefore concluded that the movement degradation of the interface and the appearance of bamboo like martensite induced the degradation of two way shape memory effect (TWMP). 展开更多

Metallographic structure analysis of DC pulsed SAW joint

With improvements of welding equipment, direct current ( DC) pulsed SAW ( PSAW) was utilized successfully in the research. Comparing DC PSAW with DC common SAW ( CSAW) , the metallographic structure was analyzed with optical and electron microscope, the width of HAZ was measured as well as the width and hardness of the coarse grained HAZ (CGHAZ). The research shows that DC PSAW joint had higher welding penetration, narrower HAZ and CGHAZ, which benefited HAZ performance and welding quality. 展开更多

Based on two-dimensional (2D) rigid-plastic finite element (FE) method, the optimum observation area for metallographic microstructure and the influence of the height-diameter ratio on which were analyzed for the cylindrical samples with the diameter of 8 mm and different heights from 8 to 16 mm in nonuniform compressive experiments. It is shown that the representative metallographic observation area relevant to the applied deformation condition is located at about 0.835 of the radius from the center of the sample to the solder joint between the sample and the thermocouples. At the same time, the microstructure in that area is more appropriate as the height of the sample is 12 mm. The related parameters of GH4033 superalloy were adopted in the FE analysis, and the validity of this analysis was verified by the compressive experiments. 展开更多

An alloy of A1-8wt% Si-0.8wt% Fe was cast in a metallic die, and its microstrucmral changes due to Ti-B refiner and Sr modifier additions were studied. Apart from usual refinement and modification of the microstructure, some mutual influences of the additives took place, and no mutual poisoning effects by these additives, in combined form, were observed. It was noticed that the dimensions of the iron-rich intermetallics were influenced by the additives causing them to become larger. The needle-shaped intermetallics that were obtained from refiner addition became thicker and longer when adding the modifier. It was also found that a-Al and eutectic silicon phases preferentially nucleate on different types of intermetallic compounds. The more iron content of the intermetallic compounds and the more changes in their dimensions occurred. Formation of the shrinkage porosities was also observed. 展开更多

The high strength steel plate HG70D showed excellent weldability. Through the X-ray inspection of welded joints, tensile strength, impact test and bending performance test, the comprehensive performance of the joint was excellent. The macroscopic and microscopic metallographic analysises of the welded joints show that the welding seams included pearlite, sorbite, ferrite, etc. The influence of stress annealing temperature on HG70D of high strength steel plate was analyzed by heat treatment. 展开更多

Spall fracture is a damage that occurs in a body when two rarefaction waves interact and produce enough dynamic tension breakage,and then the spall zone is founded in the interior of the target.Behavior of materials in the spall phenomenon is strongly affected by the stress level,time of loading and so on.The spall properties of 30CrMnSiNi2A steel loaded by a gas gun were investigated using the planar impact experiment and the two-wave structural profiles of free surface velocities of specimens were recorded by velocity interferometer system for any reflector (VISAR) techniques.The Hugoniot elastic limit (HEL),spall strength,spall thickness and strain rate were obtained in the plate impact experiments of 30CrMnSiNi2A steel specimens with different thickness.The result indicates that the values of HEL and spall strength increase with the increasing strain rate.The dynamic spall fracture and corresponding microscopic mechanism of 30CrMnSiNi2A at different strain rates were evaluated through the fracture analysis and fractography using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). 展开更多

The Ginzbury-Landau theory for bainitic transformation was devised, which contains two first-order phase transformations, one being reconstructive represented by the diffusional proeutectoidal precipitation of ferrite, and the other the displacive transformation. It provides a coupled mechanism for the formation of bainite. With the numerical simulation results, a diffusion-induced nucleation and a diffusion-accompanied growth of displacive transformation were suggested. This theory can be helpful to over- throw the thermodynamic difficulty of displacive transformation above the Ms temperature, and also helpful to understand the Bs temperature, the partial supersaturation, the single variation of bainitic carbides, and the incomplete-reaction phenomenon of bainitic transformation, etc.. 展开更多

A fracture criterion derived from a microscopic point of view is proposed and has proved to be effective in the analysis of uniaxial tension. On the one hand, a method of predicting a ductile fracture is proposed using a three-dimensional void model and the assumption of velocity discontinuity. The relationship between the void volume fraction and the critical strain to fracture, calculated with the help of the new model, shows the same tendency as that obtained from the modified Thomason model. On the other hand, the mechanical and metallographic analyses of the uniaxial tension experiment are performed using four kinds of carbon steel. The relationship between the void volume fraction and the critical strain to fracture, calculated from the new model, agrees better with the result obtained from the experiment, rather than that calculated by the modified Thomason model, which confirms the validity of the ductile fracture criterion based on the three-dimensional void model. 展开更多

Welding parameters such as tool rotational speed (900, 1120 and 1400 rpm), weld speeds (16, 40 and 80 mm/min) and tool pin profiles (square, triangular and stepped) were used to weld many joints to study their effect on the mechanical properties of the joint. Also, different locations of the material were studied as other parameter. The mechanical properties were evaluated using tensile and hardness tests. The microstructure characterization of the processed alloys was carried out using optical microscopy. Macro and microstructures of parent and welded specimens indicated that the weld parameters have a significant effect on mechanical and microstructural properties of the welds. However, defect-free as well as higher strength was obtained at higher speed of 80 mm/min. 展开更多

In this study, metallographic analysis and nanoindentation characterization were used to analyze the properties and microstructures of as-cast nitrogen alloyed 27Cr-7Ni-4Mo super duplex stainless steel (super-DSS). The as-cast microstructure of the super-DSS was characterized by its ferrite and island-like austenite phases. During the solution annealing process, the austenite volume percentage of the steel decreased gradually with increased annealing temperature. As a main element, the chromium content in the ferritic and austenitic phases elevated slightly at first then decreased with increased annealing temperature. The chromium partition coefficient in the steel varied by around 1.0. The contents of nickel, another main alloy element, also increased in the ferritic and austenitic phases with increased annealing temperature, as did the nickel partition coefficient in the steel, which tended to be close to 1.0. The nanoindentation characterization results indicate that the hardness of the austenite phase is slightly greater than that of the ferrite phase. They were similar to each other within a certain temperature range from 1 050 ℃ to 1 100℃. This temperature range was consistent with the temperature range in which the content ratio of the two phases was close to 1: 1. We found the Young' s modulus of the ferrite phase to be greater than that of the austenite phase. With increased annealing temperature, the Young' s modulus of the ferrite phase decreased while that of the austenite phase remained almost unchanged. 展开更多

In this paper uniformity of SiC particles distribution in Al-based composites produced by stir casting and powder metallurgy technique is assessed. Analysis is carried out by means of classical and computer quantification metallographic image analysis methods. Cu-Zn alloy (Brass) is widely used as an industrial material because of its excellent characteristics such as high corrosion resistance, non-magnetism and good forging ability. This paper evaluates the mechanical and microstructure properties of α-brass alloy gotten from scrap copper and zinc metal, and compares the properties with normal α-brass billets. Five different compositions of the α-brass alloy (Cu-5%Zn, Cu-10%Zn, Cu-15%Zn, Cu-20%Zn, Cu-30%Zn) were produced from scraps of copper wire and zinc batteries casing respectively by method of sand casting. The parts of the cast rods were machined to a specification of 60 mm × 100 mm × 300 mm on a lathe to obtain tensile test specimens. After homogenization annealing, the samples were heated in an electric furnace at 500℃ for 3 hours. The samples were etched with ferric chloride solution for 20 seconds and sent for metallographic examination. The result of the hardness test shows variation in hardness of the cast Cu-Zn alloys with increasing zinc content. The ductility and elongation of the α-brass decrease with increasing zinc content. The colouration of the α-brass changed from red to yellow as the zinc content increases. In conclusion, hard brass can be obtained from recycled Cu and Zn as compared to normal brass billets. 展开更多

An in-depth understanding of the fracture behavior and mechanism of metallic shells under internal explosive loading can help develop material designs for warheads and regulate the quantity and mass distribution of the fragments formed.This study investigated the fragmentation performance of a new high-carbon silicon-manganese(HCSiMn)steel cylindrical shell through fragment recovery experiments.Compared with the conventional 45Cr steel shell,the number of small mass fragments produced by the HCSi Mn steel shell was significantly increased with a scale parameter of 0.57 g fitted by the Weibull distribution model.The fragmentation process of the HCSi Mn shell exhibited more brittle tensile fracture characteristics,with the microcrack damage zone on the outer surface being the direct cause of its high fragmentation.On the one hand,the doping of alloy elements resulted in grain refinement by forming metallographic structure of tempered sorbite,so that microscopic intergranular fracture reduces the characteristic mass of the fragments;on the other hand,the distribution of alloy carbides can exert a"pinning"effect on the substrate grains,causing more initial cracks to form and propagate along the brittle carbides,further improving the shell fragmentation.Although the killing power radius for light armored vehicles was slightly reduced by about 6%,the dense killing radius of HCSiMn steel projectile against personnel can be significantly increased by about 26%based on theoretical assessment.These results provided an experimental basis for high fragmentation warhead design,and to some extent,revealed the correlation mechanism between metallographic structure and shell fragmentation. 展开更多

The deformation characteristics of tailor rolled blank (TRB) in the course of uniaxial tension were studied by means of analysis, test and simulation. The mechanical analytical model of TRB during uniaxial tension was set up, and the deformation formulae for the thinner side and for the thicker side were derived to quantify the deformation of TRB. On this basis, uniaxial tension tests on TRB and ordinary blanks (the thinner side and the thicker side of TRB) were conducted. Lagrange polynomial interpolation method was adopted to construct the stress-strain fields of unannealed and annealed TRBs for solving TRB material parameters, and then, uniaxial tension simulation on TRB was completed. Deformations and properties of unannealed TRB were compared with those of annealed TRB, and the thinner side and the thicker side were also compared. Finally, the research results were explained by metallurgical structure. The results show that nonuniform deformation happens in TRB during uniaxial tension, and the necking occurs on the thinner side. The agreement of analysis, test and simulation confirms the correctness of the analytical model and the deformation formulae. The findings of this paper can lay the foundation for the future study on TRB stamping formability and provide a way for TRB modeling. 展开更多

To accurately predict the occurrence of ductile fracture in metal forming processes, the Gurson-Tvergaard (GT) porous material model with optimized adjustment parameters is adopted to analyze the macroscopic stressstrain response, and a practical void nucleation law is proposed with a few material constants for engineering applications. Mechanical and metallographic analyses of uniaxial tension, torsion and upsetting experiments are performed. According to the character of the metal forming processes, the basic mechanisms of ductile fracture are divided into two modes: tension-type mode and shear-type mode. A unified fracture criterion is proposed for wide applicable range, and the comparison of experimental results with numerical analysis results confirms the validity of the newly proposed ductile fracture criterion based on the GT porous material model. 展开更多
