However, generalized mixed methods are automatically stable, and their building process is simple and straightforward. In this paper, based on the seminal idea of the generalized mixed methods, a simple, stable, and highly accurate 8-node noncompatible symplectic element(NCSE8) was developed by the combination of the modified Hellinger-Reissner mixed variational principle and the minimum energy principle. To ensure the accuracy of in-plane stress results, a simultaneous equation approach was also suggested. Numerical experimentation shows that the accuracy of stress results of NCSE8 are nearly the same as that of displacement methods, and they are in good agreement with the exact solutions when the mesh is relatively fine. NCSE8 has advantages of the clearing concept, easy calculation by a finite element computer program, higher accuracy and wide applicability for various linear elasticity compressible and nearly incompressible material problems. It is possible that NCSE8 becomes even more advantageous for the fracture problems due to its better accuracy of stresses.展开更多

The modified zeolite particles were incorporated to PSf and PI matrix and the influence of these particles on thermal, mechanical and structural properties was evaluated. The morphological evolution was investigated through scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM) analysis, which revealed good compatibility between organic polymer matrix and inorganic filler. Mechanical stability was investigated by tensile testing while thermal analysis was evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). This revealed improvement in thermal properties with increasing filler concentration from 1 wt% to 10 wt%. Structural analysis was successfully done using X-ray diffraction analysis(XRD) and Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectroscopy. Solvent content of fabricated mixed matrix membranes was observed to decrease while moving from more hydrophilic to less hydrophilic solvent. However, addition of filler content enhanced the porosity of fabricated membranes. The synthesized mixed matrix membranes exhibited good antibacterial activity and the highest activity was shown by PSf/PI/MZ mixed matrix membrane. Therefore, the combination effect of PSf, PI and MZ sufficiently enhanced the antibacterial activity of mixed matrix membranes.展开更多

We focused on con- trolling the nanoparticle migration and studying how it affected the heat transfer rate and pressure drop. Because the nanoparticles have very small dimensions, we only considered Brownian motion and ther- mophoretic diffusivity as the main causes of nanoparticle migration. Because thermophoresis is very sensitive to temperature gradients, we imposed various temperature gradients using asymmetric heat- ing. Considering hydrodynamically and thermally fully developed flow, the governing equations were reduced to two-point ordinary boundary value differential equations and were solved numerically. The imposed thermal asymmetry changed the direction of nanoparticle migration and distorted the velocity, temperature, and nanoparticle concentration profiles. Moreover, we found optimum values for the radius ratio (ζ) and heat flux ratio (ε); with these optimum values, the nanofluid enhanced the efficacy of the system.展开更多

It has advantages including low cost, environmentally friendly, haul-convenience, and so on. WMA has been widely tested and applied in the USA in the last decade, but it has just started in China. Recently, a new WMA using a new plastic- macromolecule-normal temperature additive, which was called "SMC" by the production company, was introduced as asphalt modifier. Based on discussing the strength forming process of this new WMA with SMC, a series of laboratory tests, including Marshall stability test (MST), boiling test (BT), modified immersion Marshall test (MIMT), freeze-thaw split- ring test (FTST), rutting test (RT), low-temperature bending test (LTBT), and abrasion loss test (ALT), were conducted in this study to assess the performance of this WMA and the capability of applying it on low volume roads in China. SMC modified asphalt mixed under normal temperature is used in testing samples. It was found that this WMA product exhibited merits on its strength, which was about 6.7 kN bigger than the requirement of 5.0 kN in the JTG F40-2004, on high-temperature stability, which is about 1100 times/ram greater than the requirement of 600-1000 times/mm in the )TG F40-2004, and on its storage stability. Based on these indicators, it is recommended that this product could be used for low volume low class roads construction. However, due to the relatively lower water resistance and low-temperature cracking resistance, this product is suggested to be applied first in the areas with warm weather and little rainfall. In order to improve the perfor- mance of this WMA with SMC, further research on this SMC asphalt modifier should be continued.展开更多
