Mobile Technology and Dissemination of Information in the Kenyan Insurance Industry

It is estimated that only 15 percent of Kenyans have made plans for retirement, and many people fall into poverty once they retire. A 2018 survey by the Unclaimed Property Asset register found that insurance companies hold 25 percent of unclaimed funds with 10 percent belonging to pensioners. This was attributed to a lack of effective information flow between insurance companies and the customers and also between various departments in the insurance companies. Further, there were numerous cases of loss of documents and files and certain files were untraceable in the departments. This paper investigates ways in which mobile technology influences dissemination of information for processing pension claims in the insurance industry. An improvement in dissemination of information for processing of pension claims can carry out a key function in increasing percentage of Kenyans making plans for retirement. The study deployed a descriptive study design. The target population in this study was 561 pensioners in Jubilee Insurance and 8 heads of pensions business, finance, legal services, internal audit, operations, information and communication technology, actuary, business development and strategy and business development departments. The sample size of this study was obtained by use of Krejcie and Morgan formula of determining sample size. As a result of the small number of heads of departments, they were not sampled. Through systematic sampling a sample of 288 pensioners was selected from the list of pensioners in Jubilee Insurance. The findings from the study led to a conclusion that mobile application has a positive and significant association with dissemination of information for pension claims processing in Jubilee Insurance. It was further revealed that text messages have a positive and significant influence on dissemination of information. Concerning unstructured supplementary service data (USSD) it was concluded that it has a positive and significant influence on dissemination of information. The study findings also revealed that voice calls have a positive and significant influence on dissemination of information for pension claims processing in Jubilee Insurance. 展开更多

The speed of spread of Coronavirus Disease 2019 led to global lockdowns and disruptions in the academic sector.The study examined the impact of mobile technology on physics education during lockdowns.Data were collected through an online survey and later evaluated using regression tools,frequency,and an analysis of variance(ANOVA).The findings revealed that the usage of mobile technology had statistically significant effects on physics instructors’and students’academics during the coronavirus lockdown.Most of the participants admitted that the use of mobile technologies such as smartphones,laptops,PDAs,Zoom,mobile apps,etc.were very useful and helpful for continued education amid the pandemic restrictions.Online teaching is very effective during lock-down with smartphones and laptops on different platforms.The paper brings the limelight to the growing power of mobile technology solutions in physics education. 展开更多

To improve the statisticsefficiency of road traffic volume, this thesis proposes a method for predictingmotor vehicle traffic volume on urban roads in small and medium-sizedcities during the traffic peak hour by using mobile signal technology. Themethod is verified through simulation experiments, and the limitations andthe improvement methods are discussed. This research can be divided intothree parts: Firstly, the traffic patterns of small and medium-sized cities areobtained through a questionnaire survey. A total of 19745 residents weresurveyed in Luohe, a medium-sized city in China and five travel modes oflocal people were obtained. Secondly, after the characteristics of residents’rest and working time are investigated, a method is proposed in this studyfor the distribution of urban residential and working places based on mobilephone signaling technology. Finally, methods for predicting traffic volume ofthese travel modes are proposed after the characteristics of these travel modesand methods for the distribution of urban residential and working placesare analyzed. Based on the actual traffic volume data observed at offlineintersections, the project team takes Luohe city as the research object and itverifies the accuracy of the prediction method by comparing the predictiondata. The prediction simulation results of traffic volume show that the averageerror rate of traffic volume is unstable. The error rate ranges from 10% to 30%.In this thesis, simulation experiments and field investigations are adopted toanalyze why these errors occur. 展开更多

In order to forecast promising technologies in the field of next generation mobile communication, various patent indicators were analyzed such as citation per patent, patent family information, patent share, increase rate, and patent activity. These indicators were quantified into several indexes and then integrated into an evaluation score to provide promising technologies. As a result of the suggested patent analysis, four technologies out of twenty two in details classification were selected, which showed outstanding technology competitiveness, high patent share and increasing rates as well as high recent-patent-ratios and triad-patent-family-ratios. Each of the selected technologies scored more than 10 points in total, and the following four technologies were suggested as promising ones in the field of next generation mobile communication: 1) 3GPP based mobile communication, 2) beyond 4G mobile communication, 3) IEEE 802.16 based mobile communication, which are in medium classification of broadband mobile communication system, and 4) testing/certification system of mobile communication, which is in medium classification of mobile communication testing/certification system. 展开更多

Some Results of Direct FR Technology Applied to Study Methane Seepage Areas in the Arctic Region

The experimental study of the seepage processes’sources formation in structures of the Arctic Region was carried out using modified methods of frequency-resonance(FR)processing and decoding of satellite images and photographs with the vertical scanning of the cross-sections.The newly obtained results show that the intensity and dynamics of the methane seeps and pockmarks fields’formation depend on active deep degassing processes in the continental margin structures.The use of direct FR-sounding technologies allows for determining the probable origin and depth of geological sources of gas migration at marginal migration centers in Greenland,and Norwegian and Barents Seas.New results confirm the crust-mantle gas fluids’influence on the nature and degassing processes features in the scan points of polar marginal structures.These data are important arguments in favor of the“volcanic model”of various structural elements formation in this and other regions.The FR technologies data also showed a possibility of seeps use as shallow and deep hydrocarbon field indicators in gas emission areas.These independent data can be used in compiling models of the deep lithosphere structure and possible mechanisms of abiogenetic hydrocarbon formation in Arctic margin structures.The authors suppose that hydrocarbons through deep channels migrate(from 57 km deep)to the upper crustal horizons where their fields can form.During this migration,gas seeps and pockmarks are formed on the sea bottom and part of the gas can migrate into the atmosphere.Data show that basaltic volcanoes in Greenland scan points can be the real channels through which hydrogen migrates to the upper crustal horizons and further into the atmosphere.Active gas migration in Arctic seepage areas can be an important factor in the global climate change processes. 展开更多

Field training is the backbone of the teacher-preparation process.Its importance stems from the goals that colleges of education aim to achieve,which include bridging the gap between theory and practice and aligning with contemporary educational trends during teacher training.Currently,trainee students attendance in field training is recordedmanually through signatures on attendance sheets.However,thismethod is prone to impersonation,time wastage,and misplacement.Additionally,traditional methods of evaluating trainee students are often susceptible to human errors during the evaluation and scoring processes.Field training also lacks modern technology that the supervisor can use in case of his absence from school to monitor the trainee students’implementation of the required activities and tasks.These shortcomings do not meet the needs of the digital era that universities are currently experiencing.As a result,this paper presents a smart management system for field training based on Internet of Things(IoT)and mobile technology.It includes three subsystems:attendance,monitoring,and evaluation.The attendance subsystem uses an R307 fingerprint sensor to record trainee students’attendance.The Arduino Nano microcontroller transmits attendance data to the proposed Android application via an ESP-12F Wi-Fi module,which then forwards it to the Firebase database for storage.The monitoring subsystem utilizes Global Positioning System(GPS)technology to continually track trainee students’locations,ensuring they remain at the school during training.It also enables remote communication between trainee students and supervisors via audio,video,or text by integrating video call and chat technologies.The evaluation subsystem is based on three items:an online exam,attendance,and implementation of required activities and tasks.Experimental results have demonstrated the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed management system in recording attendance,as well as in monitoring and evaluating trainee students during field traiing. 展开更多

Nowadays, mobile technology makes it possible for us to realize processes in a relatively short amount of time, showing the user friendly and efficient interfaces that any person is capable of adapting to. Continuing this trend, we develop a mobile application that aids in giving an early diagnosis of Influenza and Dengue, two diseases that affect approximately 5% of the world population (in the case of Dengue) and 5% - 15% of the northern hemisphere (in the case of influenza). Our application consists of an expert system based on fuzzy logic that analyzes symptoms introduced by the user and formulates a diagnosis in approximately 2 - 4 minutes. This system considerably reduced the diagnostic time, improving the recuperation process from these diseases due to their early detection. 展开更多

Claimed as the next generation programming paradigm, mobile agent technology has attracted extensive interests in recent years. However, up to now, limited research efforts have been devoted to the performance study of mobile agent system and most of these researches focus on agent behavior analysis resulting in that models are hard to apply to mobile agent systems. To bridge the gap, a new performance evaluation model derived from operation mechanisms of mobile agent platforms is proposed. Details are discussed for the design of companion simulation software, which can provide the system performance such as response time of platform to mobile agent. Further investigation is followed on the determination of model parameters. Finally comparison is made between the model-based simulation results and measurement-based real performance of mobile agent systems. The results show that the proposed model and designed software are effective in evaluating performance characteristics of mobile agent systems. The proposed approach can also be considered as the basis of performance analysis for large systems composed of multiple mobile agent platforms. 展开更多

Technologies and innovations are necessary to ride the inevitable tide of change. Most of enterprises are striving to reduce their computing costs through the means of virtualization. This demand of reducing the computing cost has led to the innovation of cloud computing. Cloud technology offers better computing through improved utilization and reduced administration and infrastructure costs. Cloud computing is the sum of Software as a Service (SaaS) and utility computing. Cloud computing represents a fundamental change in the way computing power is generated and distributed, transforming the delivery of IT tools and products into elastic, on demand services characterized by flexible "pay as you go" payment models. More than half of European Union (EU) businesses and consumers already use some kind of cloud services. The diffusion of cloud computing is expected to generate substantial direct and indirect impacts on economic and employment growth in the EU, thanks to the migration to a new IT paradigm enabling greater innovation and productivity. The cost of using digital technologies, such as information service providers, decreases as the number of users increases. BACKGROUND:Rapid on-site triage is critical after mass-casualty incidents(MCIs)and other mass injury events.Unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs)have been used in MCIs to search and rescue wounded individuals,but they mainly depend on the UAV operator’s experience.We used UAVs and artificial intelligence(AI)to provide a new technique for the triage of MCIs and more efficient solutions for emergency rescue.METHODS:This was a preliminary experimental study.We developed an intelligent triage system based on two AI algorithms,namely OpenPose and YOLO.Volunteers were recruited to simulate the MCI scene and triage,combined with UAV and Fifth Generation(5G)Mobile Communication Technology real-time transmission technique,to achieve triage in the simulated MCI scene.RESULTS:Seven postures were designed and recognized to achieve brief but meaningful triage in MCIs.Eight volunteers participated in the MCI simulation scenario.The results of simulation scenarios showed that the proposed method was feasible in tasks of triage for MCIs.CONCLUSION:The proposed technique may provide an alternative technique for the triage of MCIs and is an innovative method in emergency rescue. 展开更多

Barriers to medication adherence among patients have been shown to have significant impact on service quality and cost in the healthcare system. To minimize this impact, many in the healthcare industry are highly interested in supporting prescription adherence among patients. They believe that information technology in general, and mobile technology in particular, can help in developing medical practices that can be highly conducive to high rates of prescription adherence by enhancing communication between patients and healthcare providers. To this end, a number of pharmacy management benefit companies plan to adopt SMS (Short Message Service) communication to reach their customers given the wider acceptance of SMS messaging among mobile phone users. However, most of these pharmacies are reluctant to purchase service agreements from SMS aggregators without a complete understanding of user, service and business requirements related to SMS messaging. Hence, many are in dire needs for prototypes of SMS servers that can help them define and refine these requirements before committing to costly agreements with SMS aggregators. This paper describes such a prototype for a pharmacy benefit management company located in the southeast of the United States. 展开更多
