Lukcs argues that modernist writers are preoccupied with formal experiment and fails to see their literary merits.Brecht criticizes Lukcs for not paying attention to class struggle and rejects the kind of formal unity admired by Lukcs.Lu Xun,like Brecht,insisted on the class nature of literature,emphasizing the fighting function of literature in a time when the nation was faced with Japanese invasion.

In this article,Mocombe highlights what he calls the pathological-pathogenic purposive-rationalities(liberalism,nihilism,conservatism,postmodernism,intersectionality/identity politics,and secular humanism)that emerge out of modernity as constituted by the West under American hegemony.In the place of these pathological-pathogenic responses to the vagaries of modernity,Mocombe calls for an antihumanism,associated with what he calls libertarian communism,as a panacea to the aforementioned malaises.

Woman, Fiction and Modernism:Virginia Woolf and Modernist Fiction

As an outstanding modernist female writer in the early twentieth century, Virginia Woolf appeals for women's liberation in literary productions. Focusing on her most significant feminist criticism A Room of One's Own, especially on the argument "It is useless to go to the great men writers for help . . . a man's sentence . . . was unsuited for a woman's use", this essay attempts to explore how Woolf searches for language and literary forms more suited for women writers in patriarchal society, and in what ways modernist language and literary form have been shaped by the motives for innovation in Woolf's works. Shaping and being shaped by the trend of modernism, Woolf's assertion of androgynous mind and her unique stream-of-consciousness techniques make contribution to modernist female writing.

Health Council of the Netherlands and evaluation of the fifth generation,5G,for wireless communication and cancer risks

Currently the fifth generation,5G,for wireless communication is about to be rolled out worldwide.Many persons are concerned about potential health risks from radiofrequency radiation.In September 2017,a letter was sent to the European Union asking for a moratorium on the deployment until scientific evaluation has been made on potential health risks(http://www.5Gappeal.eu).This appeal has had little success.The Health Council of the Netherlands released on September 2,2020 their evaluation on 5G and health.It was largely based on a World Health Organization draft and report by the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority,both criticized for not being impartial.The guidelines by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection were recommended to be used,although they have been considered to be insufficient to protect against health hazards(http://www.emfscientist.org).The Health Council Committee recommended not to use the 26 GHz frequency band until health risks have been studied.For lower frequencies,the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection guidelines were recommended.The conclusion that there is no reason to stop the use of lower frequencies for 5G is not justified by current evidence on cancer risks as commented in this article.A moratorium is urgently needed on the implementation of 5G for wireless communication.

Research on Low-carbon Transportation-oriented Urban Planning and Design Strategy: A Case Study of The Netherlands

In the era of urban stock development,advocatinglow-carbontravelandreducing transportation carbon emissions will help promote the realization of the “dual carbon” goal. Based on the urban planning and design concept of “small block, dense road network”, the paper analyzes the cases of low-carbon transportation-oriented road network planning and construction in the Netherlands,and summarizes the design concept and implementation method of road network planning of public transportation and slow traffic friendly blocks. The successful experiences of low-carbon transportationoriented city construction in the Netherlands are summarized, in order to provide the reference for lowcarbon urban development in China.

Transformations of the Orientalist Agenda in Israeli Modernism(1920s-1970s)

The purpose of the article is to review the dynamics of the Orientalist agenda in Israeli modernism from the 1920s to the 1970s as the establishment of sign-object relations(semiosis)in the national art and music.The article considers,as a key issue,the phenomenon,which was not explicitly voiced as such,but was present at a conscious level in the artistic palette of the first and second generation of Israeli artists and composers.This refers to rather Eastern than Jewish narratives(or at least the delicate balance between them)in Israeli visual art and music created over the decades following World War I and up to the postmodern era.The main milestones in this process are reviewed based on the analysis of several selected artifacts.The scope of the topic begins with artists’acquaintance with the local motif and proceeds to the work with(and conceptualization of)various Eastern,Jewish,and Israeli symbols.

Postmodernism and Classical Chinese Philosophy

While over two thousand years apart, Western postmodernism and ancient Chinese philosophy share some extraordinary similarities, especially epistemology wise. For example, they both recognize the role of language in constructing, and limiting, knowledge and reality. This is because thinkers of different cultures and geographical regions, and of different historical periods, can possibly come up with similar philosophical conclusions when addressing what is commonly known as the ＂human condition＂. The paper will discuss, in general terms, some of the philosophical similarities between postmodemism and classical Chinese philosophy; it will also take a close look at three concepts in Chinese philosophy that register strong affinity with Western postmodernism： namely, change, dialectic, and relativism.

Robert Frost:A Poet from Romanticism to Modernism

Hart Crane:A Romantic Poet of the Complex Genre of High Modernism

For many decades Herold Hart Crane,an American poet,who played a very important role in the development of Modern American Literature in the early decades of 20th century,had been considered as a romantic poet by many critics for his romantic verses.His poetries are considered not only the reflection of the contemporary social phenomenon,ideology,and thoughts,rather they are prophetic.On the other hand,in the early decades of 20th century,in American society,modernism marked a simultaneous movement which tremendously affected the emergence of new values in field of politics,economy,lifestyle,literature,and literary thoughts.The influence of rapid industrializations and the First World War not only changed the philosophy of human life,but also changed the writing style of the contemporary American writers.The new crowded urban life,which is a result of rapid industrializations,and the fear of war made the human being selfish.Humans lost his romantic attitudes towards the literature.A complexity emerged.Hart Crane also could not avoid this complexity.If we study his life style,philosophy of life,and poetic diction,we will surely confine his intelligence not between romanticism and modernism separately.Rather,we can call him a Modernist Romantic poet.In short,Crane can be declared as a romantic poet of the complex genre of high modernism.

In 2016 European Romantic Review published a special issue on China in Romantic literature and culture.The four articles in this issue examine China’s impact on such British cultural domains as gardening,periodicals,folktale,and tourism.In his introduction to this issue,Kitson argues that literary studies in the 21st century should renew their attention to China:"With the increasing presence...of China on the global stage,imminently about to assume the status of the world’s lar gest economy,it might now be argued that in the second decade of the twenty-first century our critical focus might be attuned to China and Southeast Asia"(3).

Increasing the Adaptive Capacity in Unembanked Neighborhoods? An Exploration into Stakeholder Support for Adaptive Measures in Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Cities in deltas are vulnerable to climate change, especially their unembanked neighborhoods that are not protected by dikes. Rising sea levels and extreme water levels in the rivers can lead to the flooding of these urban areas. The Netherlands has a long history in water management. However, building dikes and the elevation of land are traditionally treated as rather stand-alone measures. Attention is rarely paid to the surrounding area, let alone to the complex context of cities and certainly not to disadvantaged neighborhoods. Yet, inner-city area redevelopment may provide opportunities to integrate flood management in these planning processes. In order to investigate the support of stakeholders for risk-reducing adaptive measures and more resilient measures, we did research in an unembanked inner-city area in the city of Rotterdam (The Netherlands), in which we conducted in-depth interviews with the central stakeholders. The main conclusion is that the most important barriers for integrating climate adaptation measures into that neighborhood are the fragmentation of water-safety policy (e.g. elevation of rebuilding locations) and the hierarchical governance arrangement in water management. This type of fragmentation led on its turn to fragmentation with other policy goals for the neighborhood. It also led to fragmentation between different areas in the same neighborhood that received political attention and those that are excluded from water-safety policy. This questions the approach in terms of social justice. An important side effect is that this governance arrangement also restricted innovation towards climate adaptation. Therefore, integrating water-safety policies in urban planning (in its capacity as a more integrative and comprehensive spatial approach) should be considered the best option to increase the adaptive capacity in delta cities. Not only can the negative effects in terms of policy fragmentation be dealt with effectively, but also spatial fragmentation can be tackled.

Organizing resilient infrastructure initiatives:A study on conceptualization,motivation,and operation of ten initiatives in the Netherlands

Resilient infrastructure is critical to a sustainable and functioning society.Infrastructure management and(re)development are highly complex processes encompassing various stakeholders’interests while they are pres-sured by the uncertainty of climate change and social transition.In response to these challenges,various resilience initiatives emerged with different motivations and approaches.The purpose of this research is to understand the interplay between motivations and organizational approaches as well as resilience conceptualization.This can provide insights into which domains of resilience have been focused on and what needs to be improved in their or-ganizational approaches to realize motivations.This research specifically investigates ten resilient infrastructure initiatives in the Netherlands.By using scoping review and content analysis,our results highlight that resilience initiatives conceptualize resilience in different ways,mainly focusing on built and organizational resilience with a focus on long-term and wider geographic scope.Each initiative had several motivations,including 1)creat-ing innovative solutions,2)sharing knowledge,3)promoting commitment and cooperation,and 4)promoting resilience.These motivations are reflected in the organizational approach.For example,there was a strong link between the motivation‘creating shared knowledge’and the organizational approach‘research collaboration.’Generic motivation such as‘promoting resilience’does not have one mainstreaming approach,which shows promoting resilience in practice is still in the exploration stage.This research provides major motivations and organizational approaches and their link within the resilient infrastructure initiatives which can contribute to better organizing similar initiatives aiming for resilient infrastructure.
