Background:The incidence of syphilis has been increasing in the United States over the last two decades,with a more recent increase among women.Ocular syphilis is an uncommon but important complication of syphilis,mos...Background:The incidence of syphilis has been increasing in the United States over the last two decades,with a more recent increase among women.Ocular syphilis is an uncommon but important complication of syphilis,most often presenting as posterior or panuveitis in late or latent syphilis of unknown duration.Untreated ocular syphilis may lead to permanent vision loss,underscoring the importance of appropriate evaluation and treatment of ocular syphilis.Case Description:In a retrospective,non-contiguous case series,we highlight four patients diagnosed and treated with ocular syphilis at a single institution.Four presentations of ocular syphilis are illustrated:anterior and intermediate uveitis,optic neuritis,posterior uveitis,and panuveitis.All patients initially presented with a decreased visual acuity(VA).One patient had a previous diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus(HIV).Three patients were treated with intravenous(IV)penicillin and one patient with IV ceftriaxone.All had a return to their baseline VA after their course of treatment.Conclusions:Syphilis may go undetected without a high index of clinical suspicion due to its nonspecific presentations.All patients with ocular inflammation should have syphilis testing as a part of their infectious workup with both treponemal and non-treponemal testing.Patients diagnosed with syphilis and are not known to be HIV-negative should undergo testing for HIV due to the high rate of co-infection.Early diagnosis and prompt treatment after onset of symptoms may contribute to a more favorable prognosis for ocular syphilis.展开更多

In both rural and urban areas, photovoltaic modules are in some instances installed close to telecommunication antennas or voltage transformers which generate important magnetic fields in their vicinity. The question is whether or not these magnetic fields affect the performances of the photovoltaic installations. This article presents a modelling study of external magnetic field effect on the electrical parameters of a photovoltaic module. The photocurrent, the photovoltage, the electric power, the series and the shunt resistances of the photovoltaic module, made up of ideal cells, are deduced from those of a silicon solar cell. Then, the I-V and P-V curves are plotted and the theoretical values of the electrical parameters of the photovoltaic module are deduced. The series and shunt resistances of the photovoltaic module are calculated using well known equations and the previous electrical parameters. The results show the negative effect of magnetic field on the performance of a solar photovoltaic module.展开更多

The module performance parameters are determined from calculated mod...This work investigates the effects of temperature and radiation intensity on the parameters of a copper indium diselenide (CIS) photovoltaic module. The module performance parameters are determined from calculated module parameters. An outdoor experimental setup is installed to carryout a series of I-V curve measurements under different irradiance and temperature conditions for the module. A numerical model which considers the effect of series and shunt resistances is developed to evaluate the different parameters of PV modules. Orthogonal distance regression (ODR) algorithm is adapted for fitting I-V measurements and extracting module parameters from I-V measurements. The values of module parameters, series resistance Rs, shunt resistance Rsh, diode ideality factor n and reverse saturation current Io determined from I-V measurements at different irradiation intensity and temperature range are in good agreement with the corresponding parameters obtained from the developed numerical model. The module parameters extracted from I-V measurements are employed to calculate the module performance parameters, i.e. open circuit voltage Voc, fill factor FF and module efficiency η at different irradiation intensity and temperature range. Present results indicate that the largest drop in open circuit voltage Voc due to about 20℃ increase in temperature is approximately 8.8% which is not compensated for by the relatively small increase in short circuit current, (2.9% in Isc), resulting in a reduction in maximum power of about 6.3%. Results let us conclude that the shunt resistance RSh increases with radiation at low radiation values (2). As radiation increases at high radiation values (> 400 W/m2), RSh begins to decease sharply and dramatically. Also, as the light intensity incident on the solar module increases, the series resistance and the output voltage decrease. When the irradiance intensity increases, the series resistance decreases but with a very low rate at the two studied temperatures ranges. The low rate decrease of Rs is found to have little effect on module performance in comparison with the significant change of other module parameters. The ideality factor n and saturation current Io decrease first sharply in the low range of radiation intensity (2) and this decrease becomes smaller for irradiance values greater than 400 W/m2. The previous observations and conclusions regarding the module parameters RSh, RS, n and Io obtained at 20℃ observed again at 40℃ but there is a great difference between the peak values of RSh at both temperature levels. Present results also show that module efficiency decreases with increasing irradiance intensity due to the combined effect of both Voc and FF.展开更多

Objective: To examine and measure the decision-making processes involved in Visual Recognition of Facial Emotional Expressions (VRFEE) and to study the effects of demographic factors on this process. Method: We evalua...Objective: To examine and measure the decision-making processes involved in Visual Recognition of Facial Emotional Expressions (VRFEE) and to study the effects of demographic factors on this process. Method: We evaluated a newly designed software application (M.A.R.I.E.) that permits computerized metric measurement of VRFEE. We administered it to 204 cognitively normal participants ranging in age from 20 to 70 years. Results: We established normative values for the recognition of anger, disgust, joy, fear, surprise and sadness expressed on the faces of three individuals. There was a significant difference in the: 1) measurement (F (8.189) = 3896, p = 0.0001);2) education level (x2(12) = 28.4, p = 0.005);3) face (F(2.195) = 10, p = 0.0001);4)series (F (8.189)=28, p = 0.0001);5) interaction between the identity and recognition of emotions (F (16, 181 =11, p = 0.0001). However, performance did not differ according to: 1) age (F (6.19669) = 1.35, p = 0.2) or 2) level of education (F (1, 1587) = 0.6, p = 0.4). Conclusions: In healthy participants, the VRFEE remains stable throughout the lifespan when cognitive functions remain optimal. Disgust, sadness, fear, and joy seem to be the four most easily recognized facial emotions, while anger and surprise are not easily recognized. Visual recognition of disgust and fear is independent of aging. The characteristics of a face have a significant influence on the ease with which people recognize expressed emotions (idiosyncrasy). Perception and recognition of emotions is categorical, even when the facial images are integrated in a spectrum of morphs reflecting two different emotions on either side.展开更多

The results show that coherent interference can occur between the single-photon and three-photon excitation pathways, and depends on the central frequency of the femtosecond laser field. Moreover,single-photon and three-photon absorptions have different polarization control efficiencies, and the relative weight of three-photon absorption in the whole excitation processes can increase with increasing the laser intensity.Therefore, the enhancement or suppression of the intermediate state absorption can be realized and manipulated by properly designing the intensity and central frequency of the polarization modulated femtosecond laser field.This research can not only enrich theoretical research methods for the up-conversion luminescence manipulation of rare-earth ions, but also can provide a clear physical picture for understanding and controlling multi-photon absorption in a multiple energy level system.展开更多

Spectrum of signals sampled by pulse amplitude modulation and output voltage spectrum of the converter with pulse width modulation have similar properties. Spectrum of signals sampled by pulse amplitude modulation contains a harmonic of frequency equal to the frequency of the modulating signal and the harmonics of frequencies equal to the sum of frequency of the modulating signal and multiples of the sampling frequency. The output voltage spectrum of the converter with bipolar pulse width modulation contains harmonic of frequency equal to the frequency of the modulating signal and harmonics of frequencies equal to sum of the frequency of the modulating signal and multiples of the frequency of the carrier signal. It also contains harmonics of frequencies equal to the sum of the multiples of the frequency of the modulating signal and the multiples of the carrier signal. The comparison analysis was carried out for the harmonics of the output voltage of the converter with bipolar pulse width modulation in time domain. The dependency of the amplitudes and frequency spectrum on the wave forms of the carrier signal and modulating signal was shown. Similarity of the output voltage spectrum of the converter and signal spectrum sampled by the pulse width modulation was also shown. This pilot study examined the effectiveness and students’perceptions of a multimedia module on intermediate Chinese-as-a-Foreign-Language(CFL)learners’understanding and use of the“shì...de”construction.The mo...This pilot study examined the effectiveness and students’perceptions of a multimedia module on intermediate Chinese-as-a-Foreign-Language(CFL)learners’understanding and use of the“shì...de”construction.The module was designed based on the First Principles of Instruction(Morrill,2002)and the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning(Mayer,2009;2014).It provided a systematic and comprehensive approach to teaching the“shì...de”construction,one of the most challenging grammar points in CFL.Twenty-two CFL learners participated in this mixed-methods study.Data were collected using pre-and post-tests,a survey,think-alouds,and semi-structured interviews.Findings show that after using the module,students’understanding and use of the construction significantly improved,except for their understanding of the second usage.The students enjoyed using the module and appreciated how it was designed,the way it was presented,and its availability.The reasons for the effectiveness of the module were analyzed and led to suggested improvements to the design of the module.The detailed description of the design process and the research result contribute to the knowledge of designing grammar teaching modules with multimedia for online,blended,and flipped learning.展开更多

文摘The topological N=2 superconformal algebra was introduced by Dijkgraaf,Verlinde and Verlinde as the symmetry algebra of topological strings at d<1.We give a classification of irreducible Z×Z-graded modules of the intermediate series over this infinite-dimensional Lie superalgebra.

文摘Let W(Г)be a class of not-finitely graded Lie algebras related to generalized Virasoro algebras with basis{L_(α,i),C|α∈Г,i∈Z_(+)},which satisfies relations[L_(α,i),L_(β,j)]=L_(α+β,i+j)+(j-i)L_(α+β,i+j+1)+δ_(α+β,0)δ_(i+j),0α^(3)-α/12 C and[C,L_(α,i)]=0.In this paper,W(Г)-modules of the intermediate series satisfying some conditions are constructed and classified.We also obtain modules of the intermediate series over the related Lie superalgebra.
