Getting insight into the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of knowledge innovation is receiving increasing attention from policymakers and economic research organizations. Many studies use bibliometric data to analyze the popularity of certain research topics,well-adopted methodologies, influential authors, and the interrelationships among research disciplines. However, the visual exploration of the patterns of research topics with an emphasis on their spatial and temporal distribution remains challenging. This study combined a Space-Time Cube(STC)and a 3D glyph to represent the complex multivariate bibliographic data.We further implemented a visual design by developing an interactive interface. The effectiveness, understandability, and engagement of ST-Map are evaluated by seven experts in geovisualization. The results suggest that it is promising to use three-dimensional visualization to show the overview and on-demand details on a single screen. 展开更多

To improve the performance of the traditional map matching algorithms in freeway traffic state monitoring systems using the low logging frequency GPS (global positioning system) probe data, a map matching algorithm based on the Oracle spatial data model is proposed. The algorithm uses the Oracle road network data model to analyze the spatial relationships between massive GPS positioning points and freeway networks, builds an N-shortest path algorithm to find reasonable candidate routes between GPS positioning points efficiently, and uses the fuzzy logic inference system to determine the final matched traveling route. According to the implementation with field data from Los Angeles, the computation speed of the algorithm is about 135 GPS positioning points per second and the accuracy is 98.9%. The results demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed algorithm for mapping massive GPS positioning data onto freeway networks with complex geometric characteristics. 展开更多

By employing the unique phenological feature of winter wheat extracted from peak before winter (PBW) and the advantages of moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) data with high temporal resolution and intermediate spatial resolution, a remote sensing-based model for mapping winter wheat on the North China Plain was built through integration with Landsat images and land-use data. First, a phenological window, PBW was drawn from time-series MODIS data. Next, feature extraction was performed for the PBW to reduce feature dimension and enhance its information. Finally, a regression model was built to model the relationship of the phenological feature and the sample data. The amount of information of the PBW was evaluated and compared with that of the main peak (MP). The relative precision of the mapping reached up to 92% in comparison to the Landsat sample data, and ranged between 87 and 96% in comparison to the statistical data. These results were sufficient to satisfy the accuracy requirements for winter wheat mapping at a large scale. Moreover, the proposed method has the ability to obtain the distribution information for winter wheat in an earlier period than previous studies. This study could throw light on the monitoring of winter wheat in China by using unique phenological feature of winter wheat. 展开更多

To design microstructure and microhardness in the additive manufacturing(AM)of nickel(Ni)-based superalloys, the present work develops a novel data-driven approach that combines physics-based models, experimental measurements, and a data-mining method. The simulation is based on a computational thermal-fluid dynamics(CtFD)model, which can obtain thermal behavior, solidification parameters such as cooling rate, and the dilution of solidified clad.Based on the computed thermal information, dendrite arm spacing and microhardness are estimated using well-tested mechanistic models.Experimental microstructure and microhardness are determined and compared with the simulated values for validation. To visualize process-structure-properties(PSPs)linkages,the simulation and experimental datasets are input to a data-mining model-a self-organizing map(SOM).The design windows of the process parameters under multiple objectives can be obtained from the visualized maps. The proposed approaches can be utilized in AM and other data-intensive processes.Data-driven linkages between process, structure, and properties have the potential to benefit online process monitoring control in order to derive an ideal microstructure and mechanical properties. 展开更多

Multidatabase systems are designed to achieve schema integration and data interoperation among distributed and heterogeneous database systems. But data model heterogeneity and schema heterogeneity make this a challenging task. A multidatabase common data model is firstly introduced based on XML, named XML-based Integration Data Model (XIDM), which is suitable for integrating different types of schemas. Then an approach of schema mappings based on XIDM in multidatabase systems has been presented. The mappings include global mappings, dealing with horizontal and vertical partitioning between global schemas and export schemas, and local mappings, processing the transformation between export schemas and local schemas. Finally, the illustration and implementation of schema mappings in a multidatabase prototype - Panorama system are also discussed. The implementation results demonstrate that the XIDM is an efficient model for managing multiple heterogeneous data sources and the approaches of schema mapping based on XIDM behave very well when integrating relational, object-oriented database systems and other file systems. 展开更多

The relatively rapid recession of glaciers in the Himalayas and formation of moraine dammed glacial lakes(MDGLs) in the recent past have increased the risk of glacier lake outburst floods(GLOF) in the countries of Nepal and Bhutan and in the mountainous territory of Sikkim in India. As a product of climate change and global warming, such a risk has not only raised the level of threats to the habitation and infrastructure of the region, but has also contributed to the worsening of the balance of the unique ecosystem that exists in this domain that sustains several of the highest mountain peaks of the world. This study attempts to present an up to date mapping of the MDGLs in the central and eastern Himalayan regions using remote sensing data, with an objective to analyse their surface area variations with time from 1990 through 2015, disaggregated over six episodes. The study also includes the evaluation for susceptibility of MDGLs to GLOF with the least criteria decision analysis(LCDA). Forty two major MDGLs, each having a lake surface area greater than 0.2 km2, that were identified in the Himalayan ranges of Nepal, Bhutan, and Sikkim, have been categorized according to their surface area expansion rates in space and time. The lakes have been identified as located within the elevation range of 3800 m and6800 m above mean sea level(a msl). With a total surface area of 37.9 km2, these MDGLs as a whole were observed to have expanded by an astonishing 43.6% in area over the 25 year period of this study. A factor is introduced to numerically sort the lakes in terms of their relative yearly expansion rates, based on their interpretation of their surface area extents from satellite imageries. Verification of predicted GLOF events in the past using this factor with the limited field data as reported in literature indicates that the present analysis may be considered a sufficiently reliable and rapid technique for assessing the potential bursting susceptibility of the MDGLs. The analysis also indicates that, as of now, there are eight MDGLs in the region which appear to be in highly vulnerable states and have high chances in causing potential GLOF events anytime in the recent future. 展开更多

Characterized by lithological diversity and rich mineral resources, Benshangul-Gumuz National Regional State located in Asosa Zones, Western Ethiopia has been investigated for geological mapping and morpho-structural lineaments extraction using PALSAR (Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar ) Fine Beam Single (FBS) L-HH polarization and Landsat-5 TM (Thematic Mapper ) datasets. These data were preprocessed to retrieve ground surface reflectance and backscatter coefficients. To overcome the geometry acquisition between the two sensors, they were geometrically and topographically rectified using ASTER-V2 DEM. Intensity-Hue-Saturation, directional filters and automatic lineaments extraction were applied on the datasets for lithological units’ discrimination and structural delimitation for potential mineral exploration. The obtained results showed good relationship among the topographic morphology, rock-substrate, structural variations properties, and drainage network. The spectral variations were easily associated with lithological units. Likewise, the morpho-structural information highlighted in the PALSAR image was visible without altering the radiometric integrity of the details in TM bands through the fusion process. Moreover, predominant lineaments directions trending NE-SW, NS, and NW-SE were identified. Results of this study highlighted the importance of the PALSAR FBS L-HH mode and TM data fusion to enhance geological features and lithological units for mineral exploration particularly in tropical zones. 展开更多

A neutral density surface is a logical study frame for water-mass mixing since water parcels spread along such a surface without doing work against buoyancy restoring force. Mesoscale eddies are believed to stir and subsequently mix predominantly along such surfaces. Because of the nonlinear nature of the equation of state of seawater, the process of accurately mapping a neutral density surface necessarily involves lateral computation from one conductivity, temperature and depth (CTD) cast to the next in a logical sequence. By contrast, the depth of a potential density surface on any CTD cast is found solely from the data on this cast. The lateral calculation procedure causes a significant inconvenience. In a previous paper by present author published in this journal (You, 2006), the mapping of neutral density surfaces with regularly gridded data such as Levitus data has been introduced. In this note, I present a new method to find the depth of a neutral density surface from a cast without having to specify an integration path in space. An appropriate reference point is required that is on the neutral density surface and thereafter the neutral density surface can be de- termined by using the CTD casts in any order. This method is only approximate and the likely errors can be estimated by plotting a scatter diagram of all the pressures and potential temperatures on the neutral density surfaces. The method assumes that the variations of potential temperature and pressure (with respect to the values at the reference point) on the neutral density surface are proportional. It is important to select the most appropriate reference point in order to approximately satisfy this assumption, and in practice this is found by inspecting the θ-p plot of data on the surface. This may require that the algorithm be used twice. When the straight lines on the θ-p plot, drawn from the reference point to other points on the neutral density surface, enclose an area that is external to the clus- ter of θ-p points of the neutral density surface, errors will occur, and these errors can be quantified from this diagram. Examples showing the use of the method are presented for each of the world’s main oceans. 展开更多

Taking autonomous driving and driverless as the research object,we discuss and define intelligent high-precision map.Intelligent high-precision map is considered as a key link of future travel,a carrier of real-time perception of traffic resources in the entire space-time range, and the criterion for the operation and control of the whole process of the vehicle. As a new form of map,it has distinctive features in terms of cartography theory and application requirements compared with traditional navigation electronic maps. Thus,it is necessary to analyze and discuss its key features and problems to promote the development of research and application of intelligent high-precision map.Accordingly,we propose an information transmission model based on the cartography theory and combine the wheeled robot’s control flow in practical application.Next,we put forward the data logic structure of intelligent high-precision map,and analyze its application in autonomous driving. Then,we summarize the computing mode of“Crowdsourcing+Edge-Cloud Collaborative Computing”,and carry out key technical analysis on how to improve the quality of crowdsourced data.We also analyze the effective application scenarios of intelligent high-precision map in the future. Finally,we present some thoughts and suggestions for the future development of this field. 展开更多

Unlike other traditional SOMs, the model has an input layer, a Kohonen layer, and an output layer. The number of neurons in the input layer depends on the dimensionality of input patterns. The number of neurons in the output layer equals the number of the desired classes. The number of neurons in the Kohonen layer may be a few to several thousands, which depends on the complexity of classification problems and the classification precision. Each training sample is expressed by a pair of vectors : an input vector and a class codebook vector. When a training sample is input into the model, Kohonen's competitive learning rule is applied to selecting the winning neuron from the Kohouen layer and the weight coefficients connecting all the neurons in the input layer with both the winning neuron and its neighbors in the Kohonen layer are modified to be closer to the input vector, and those connecting all the neurons around the winning neuron within a certain diameter in the Kohonen layer with all the neurons in the output layer are adjusted to be closer to the class codebook vector. If the number of training sam- ples is sufficiently large and the learning epochs iterate enough times, the model will be able to serve as a supervised classifier. The model has been tentatively applied to the supervised classification of multispectral remotely sensed data. The author compared the performances of the extended SOM and BPN in remotely sensed data classification. The investigation manifests that the extended SOM is feasible for supervised classification. 展开更多

In the frame of landslide susceptibility assessment, a spectral library was created to support the identification of materials confined to a particular region using remote sensing images. This library, called Pakistan spectral library(pklib) version 0.1, contains the analysis data of sixty rock samples taken in the Balakot region in Northern Pakistan. The spectral library is implemented as SQLite database. Structure and naming are inspired by the convention system of the ASTER Spectral Library. Usability, application and benefit of the pklib were evaluated and depicted taking two approaches, the multivariate and the spectral based. The spectral information were used to create indices. The indices were applied to Landsat and ASTER data tosupportthespatial delineation of outcropping rock sequences instratigraphic formations. The application of the indices introduced in this paper helps to identify spots where specific lithological characteristics occur. Especially in areas with sparse or missing detailed geological mapping, the spectral discrimination via remote sensing data can speed up the survey. The library can be used not only to support the improvement of factor maps for landslide susceptibility analysis, but also to provide a geoscientific basisto further analyze the lithological spotin numerous regions in the Hindu Kush. 展开更多

A question about the analytical capability of Google maps is answered for three examples of pin maps, and polyline and polygon maps that are computer-programmed with the third version of the Google maps application. One map reads XML data stored on the home server, whereas another downloads its data from an online fusion table, and the third includes pre-programmed data. Each map permits users to query mashup layers after the map has loaded. However, an analytical capability comparable to GIS should require users to have access to their data for analysis with their own functions while the map is loading. The technical constraint of asynchronous loading of data for Google maps is illustrated for each map. In conclusion, only one map has an analytical capability that is achieved by means of deprecated synchronous loading of data. 展开更多

In this study,we present a machine learning-based method to predict trace element concentrations from major and minor element concentration data using a legacy lithogeochemical database of magmatic rocks from the Karoo large igneous province(Gondwana Supercontinent).Wedemonstrate that a variety of trace elements, including most of the lanthanides, chalcophile, lithophile, and siderophile elements, can be predicted with excellent accuracy. This finding reveals that there are reliable,high-dimensional elemental associations that can be used to predict trace elements in a range of plutonic and volcanic rocks.Since the major and minor elements are used as predictors, prediction performance can be used as a direct proxy for geochemical anomalies. As such, our proposed method is suitable for prospective exploration by identifying anomalous trace element concentrations.Compared to multivariate compositional data analysis methods, the new method does not rely on assumptions of stoichiometric combinations of elements in the data to discover geochemical anomalies.Because we do not use multivariate compositional data analysis techniques(e.g.principal component analysis and combined use of major, minor and trace elements data),we also show that log-ratio transforms do not increase the performance of the proposed approach and are unnecessary for algorithms that are not spatially aware in the feature space. Therefore,we demonstrate that high-dimensional elemental associations can be modelled in an automated manner through a data-driven approach and without assumptions of stoichiometry within the data. The approach proposed in this study can be used as a replacement method to the multivariate compositional data analysis technique that is used for prospectivity mapping,or be used as a pre-processor to reduce the detection of false geochemical anomalies, particularly where the data is of variable quality. 展开更多

Land cover map for a part of North Sinai was produced using the FAO—Land Cover Classification System (LCCS) of 2004. The standard FAO classification scheme provides a standardized system of classification that can be used to analyze spatial and temporal land cover variability in the study area. This approach also has the advantage of facilitating the integration of Sinai land cover mapping products to be included with the regional and global land cover datasets. The total study area is 7450 km2 (1,773,842) feddans. The landscape classification was performed on SPOT4 data acquired in 2011 using combined multi-spectral bands of 20 meter spatial resolution. Geographic Information System (GIS) was used to edit the classification result in order to reach the maximum possible accuracy. GIS was also used to include all necessary information. The identified vegetative land cover classes of the study area are irrigated herbaceous crops, irrigated tree crops and rain fed tree crops. The non-vegetated land covers in the study area include: bare rock, bare soil, bare soil stony, bare soil very stony, bare soil salt crusts, loose and shifting sands and sand dunes. The water bodies were classified as artificial perennial water bodies (fish ponds and irrigated canals) and natural perennial water bodies as lakes (standing) and rivers (flowing). Artificial surfaces in the study area include linear and non-linear. The produced maps and the statistics of the different land covers are included in the following sub-sections. 展开更多

Scholarly communication of knowledge is predominantly document-based in digital repositories, and researchers find it tedious to automatically capture and process the semantics among related articles.Despite the present digital era of big data, there is a lack of visual representations of the knowledge present in scholarly articles, and a time-saving approach for a literature search and visual navigation is warranted. The majority of knowledge display tools cannot cope with current big data trends and pose limitations in meeting the requirements of automatic knowledge representation, storage, and dynamic visualization. To address this limitation, the main aim of this paper is to model the visualization of unstructured data and explore the feasibility of achieving visual navigation for researchers to gain insight into the knowledge hidden in scientific articles of digital repositories.Contemporary topics of research and practice, including modifiable risk factors leading to a dramatic increase in Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, warrant deeper insight into the evidence-based knowledge available in the literature. The goal is to provide researchers with a visual-based easy traversal through a digital repository of research articles. This paper takes the first step in proposing a novel integrated model using knowledge maps and next-generation graph datastores to achieve a semantic visualization with domain-specific knowledge, such as dementia risk factors. The model facilitates a deep conceptual understanding of the literature by automatically establishing visual relationships among the extracted knowledge from the big data resources of research articles. It also serves as an automated tool for a visual navigation through the knowledge repository for faster identification of dementia risk factors reported in scholarly articles.Further,it facilitates a semantic visualization and domain-specific knowledge discovery from a large digital repository and their associations. In this study, the implementation of the proposed model in the Neo4j graph data repository, along with the results achieved,is presented as a proof of concept.Using scholarly research articles on dementia risk factors as a case study, automatic knowledge extraction, storage, intelligent search, and visual navigation are illustrated. The implementation of contextual knowledge and its relationship for a visual exploration by researchers show promising results in the knowledge discovery of dementia risk factors.Overall, this study demonstrates the significance of a semantic visualization with the effective use of knowledge maps and paves the way for extending visual modeling capabilities in the future. 展开更多
