First, a decentralized nonlinear robust control approach based on the feedback linearization and H∞ theory is introduced to eliminate the nonlinearities and interconnections of the studied system, and to attenuate the exogenous disturbances that enter die system. Then, a system model is built up, which has considered all the generators’ and TCSC’s dynamics, and the effects of uncertainties such as disturbances. Next, a decentralized nonlinear robust coordinated control law is developed based on this model. For a multi-machine system which has a set of identical parallel turbine-generators or non-identical turbine-generators having torsional modes of the same frequency, generators may suffer from the same mode of torsional interaction corresponding to a certain series compensation degrees. Generators in such system may have different oscillation behaviors when they are unequally loaded or have different shaft and electrical parameters. Serving as the grid-side equipment, the reactive power output of a STATCOM could have an impact on all generators electrical distance nearby. Thus a single STATCOM could be used to damp torsional interactions of multi-generators when additional proper control strategy is supplemented. In this paper, control strategy of using STATCOM to damp SSR in a multi-machine system is designed and its effectiveness is validated based on a modified IEEE second benchmark model.展开更多

The proposed H∞ approach is based on shaping the open-loop transfer function in the Nyquist diagram through minimizing the quadratic error between the actual and the desired open loop transfer functions in the frequency domain under linear constraints that guarantee robustness and stability. The proposed approach is robust with respect to multi-model uncertainty closed-loop sensitivity functions in the Nyquist diagram through the constraints on their infinity norm. The H∞ constraints are linearized with the help of a desired open-loop transfer function. The controller is designed using the convex optimization techniques in which the difference between the open-loop transfer function and the desired one is minimized. The two-area four-machine test system is selected to evaluate the performance of the designed controller under different load conditions as well as different levels of wind penetrations.展开更多

A simple and effective model transformation method was proposed for the system's mathematical model in the COI (center of inertia) coordinate system. The system was transformed to an uncertain linear one where deviation of generator terminal voltage became one of the new state variables. Then a wide-area nonlinear robust voltage controller was designed utilizing a LMI (linear matrix inequality) based robust control theory. The proposed controller does not rely on any preselected system operating point, adapts to variations of network parameters and system operation conditions, and assures regulation accuracy of generator terminal voltages. Neither rotor angle nor any variable's differentiation needs to be measured for the proposed controller, and only terminal voltages, rotor speeds, active and reactive power outputs of generators are required. In addition, the proposed controller not only takes into account time delays of remote signals, but also eliminates the effect of wide-area information's incompleteness when not all generators are equipped with PMU (phase measurement unit). Detailed tests were conducted by PSCAD/EMTDC for a three-machine and four-machine power systems respectively, and simulation results illustrate high performance of the proposed controller.展开更多

To maintain the frequency stability, allocating adequate frequency-support sources poses a critical challenge to planners. In this context, we propose a frequency-constrained coordination planning model of thermal units, wind farms, and battery energy storage systems (BESSs) to provide satisfactory frequency supports. Firstly, a modified multi-machine system frequency response (MSFR) model that accounts for the dynamic responses from both synchronous generators and grid-connected inverters is constructed with preset power-headroom. Secondly, the rate-of-change-of-frequency (ROCOF) and frequency response power are deduced to construct frequency constraints. A data-driven piecewise linearization (DDPWL) method based on hyperplane fitting and data classification is applied to linearize the highly nonlinear frequency response power. Thirdly, frequency constraints are inserted into our planning model, while the unit commitment based on the coordinated operation of the thermal-hydro-wind-BESS hybrid system is implemented. At last, the proposed model is applied to the IEEE RTS-79 test system. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of our co-planning model to keep the frequency stability.展开更多
