Visualization of Disciplinary Profiles: Enhanced Science Overlay Maps 被引量:9

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to modernize previous work on science overlay maps by updating the underlying citation matrix, generating new clusters of scientific disciplines, enhancing visualizations, and providing more accessible means for analysts to generate their own maps Design/methodology/approach: We use the combined set of 2015 Journal Citation Reports for the Science Citation Index (n of journals = 8,778) and the Social Sciences Citation Index (n = 3,212) for a total of 11,365 journals. The set of Web of Science Categories in the Science Citation Index and the Social Sciences Citation Index increased from 224 in 2010 to 227 in 2015. Using dedicated software, a matrix of 227 × 227 cells is generated on the basis of whole-number citation counting. We normalize this matrix using the cosine function. We first develop the citing-side, cosine-normalized map using 2015 data and VOSviewer visualization with default parameter values. A routine for making overlays on the basis of the map ("wc 15.exe") is available at http://www.leydesdorff.net/wc 15/index.htm. Findings: Findings appear in the form of visuals throughout the manuscript. In Figures 1 9 we provide basemaps of science and science overlay maps for a number of companies, universities, and technologies. Research limitations: As Web of Science Categories change and/or are updated so is the need to update the routine we provide. Also, to apply the routine we provide users need access to the Web of Science. Practical implications: Visualization of science overlay maps is now more accurate and true to the 2015 Journal Citation Reports than was the case with the previous version of the routine advanced in our paper.Originality/value: The routine we advance allows users to visualize science overlay maps in VOSviewer using data from more recent Journal Citation Reports. 展开更多

Purpose: This paper presents findings of a quasi-experimental assessment to gauge the research productivity and degree of interdisciplinarity of research center outputs. Of special interest, we share an enriched visualization of research co-authoring patterns. Design/methodology/approach: We compile publications by 45 researchers in each of 1) the iUTAH project, which we consider here to be analogous to a "research center," 2) CG1-a comparison group of participants in two other Utah environmental research centers, and 3) CG2--a comparison group of Utah university environmental researchers not associated with a research center. We draw bibliometric data from Web of Science and from Google Scholar. We gather publications for a period before iUTAH had been established (2010-2012) and a period after (2014-2016). We compare these research outputs in terms of publications and citations thereto. We also measure interdisciplinarity using Integration scoring and generate science overlay maps to locate the research publications across disciplines. Findings: We find that participation in the iUTAH project appears to increase research outputs (publications in the After period) and increase research citation rates relative to the comparison group researchers (although CG 1 research remains most cited, as it was in the Before period). Most notably, participation in iUTAH markedly increases co-authoring among researchers--in general; and for junior, as well as senior, faculty; for men and women: across organizations; and across disciplines. Research limitations: The quasi-experimental design necessarily generates suggestive, not definitively causal, findings because of the imperfect controls. Practical implications: This study demonstrates a viable approach for research assessment of a center or program for which random assignment of control groups is not possible. It illustrates use of bibliometric indicators to inform R&D program management. Originality/value: New visualizations of researcher collaboration provide compelling comparisons of the extent and nature of social networking among target cohorts. 展开更多

Introduction: The birth of conjoined twins is an event extremely rare that offers unique therapeutic challenges and circumstances. We must examine each situation with the many questions that arise and which sometimes require a long reflection. We report a case of separation of pygopages conjoined twins as well as a review of the literature. Patients and Observations: a pair of conjoined twins aged 11 days, weighing 3080 g between them, was referred to the neonatology department from the Faranah prefecture, 300 km from Conakry, for care. The mother, a 30-year-old housewife, multipara, eight gestures and nine parities, had not followed any prenatal consultation. The delivery took place at home in a village with the death of the mother immediately postpartum. The clinical and paraclinical investigation had concluded with the diagnosis of Siamese type pygopage. After multidisciplinary consultation, the surgical treatment by separation of the twins was carried out at the age of 50 days with success and preservation of the physiological functions. Conclusion: The birth of conjoined twins is extremely rare. Each pair of Siamese is different and the surgical strategy must be adapted according to the shared organs. The perfect multidisciplinary work of the medical staff has been the main contributor to our success. 展开更多

The Development of Decision-Making Maps for the High-Speed Machining (HSM) of Rhyodacite (CarijóBasalt) in Milling-Based Processing Applications

The demand for innovative products that overcome competitive pricing and conquer market shares can be met by interdisciplinary approaches that bridge product design, engineering and technology. Ornamental and covering stones stand out among the materials in need of innovation and are commonly used in architecture and construction as coverings in urban elements, funerary art, and art and decor. In spite of the many applications of ornamental stones, products with low added value are typically observed. Although Brazil displays significant geological potential for ornamental stones, its actual market participation is as a supplier of un- or semi-processed stones. Even with the market’s visible expansion and Brazil’s increased representation in the market, the technological advances used in the final processing of stones are restricted to improve the tools used for cutting, especially the durability of diamond-coated tools, and for polishing, which, in the short-term, meets the demands for marketing, producing and distributing semi-finished products. Accordingly, a little exploited aspect of ornamental stones appears, especially for “carijó basalt” (rhyodacite), that is, the inclusion of new processing and value-adding technologies or the inclusion of non-conventional processes in the sector. The goals of this work are to study and develop HSM (high speed machining) CNC (computer numerically controlled) milling processes that are applicable to rhyodacite, specifically to determine the milling parameters that give the best results for machining time with respect to tool wear and material abrasion and to replicate the results obtained in the samples. The results show that the raw material used in the present study, because it is natural, presents significant variations in composition and hardness, which prevent specific milling parameters from being determined. However, using a post-processor specifically developed for this study, it was possible to draft a decision-making map that aids in the execution of this process. Additionally, equipment failure occurred during every attempt and with every adjustment of the milling process. This indicates that the application of multipoint tools to rhyodacite milling is difficult in this industry. Thus, the use of single-point tools should be the natural path to follow for a potential practical industrial application in Brazil. 展开更多

大数据时代的到来为历史学研究带来了机遇和挑战,尤其是在历史文献资料较为缺乏的西南山区,如何获取丰富的数据资料进行科学研究成为摆在历史学研究者面前的一大难题。本文综合利用文献资料和田野调查等多学科方法,以及数据库和GIS等手... 大数据时代的到来为历史学研究带来了机遇和挑战,尤其是在历史文献资料较为缺乏的西南山区,如何获取丰富的数据资料进行科学研究成为摆在历史学研究者面前的一大难题。本文综合利用文献资料和田野调查等多学科方法,以及数据库和GIS等手段,以聚落为研究西南山地小区域环境变化的载体数据,获取了丰富的多源数据,创建了具有连续时间序列的流域聚落信息数据库,量化分析了自然因素中地形和坡向对山地环境变化的影响。研究认为,在掌鸠河流域,不同地形区对聚落空间演变和环境变化的影响具有明显的时间动态性,坡向的影响则并不显著。本文为大数据时代下综合利用多学科方法和多技术手段研究西南山地小区域环境变化提供了一个典型的案例参照。 展开更多

近年来,在社会科学的协作配合下,渔业治理取得了长足进步。而"参与治理"和强调管理责任由政府和通常位于基层层面的用户群共同承担的"共同管理制度"在渔业治理工作中尤其受到关注。随着两部借鉴了同一国际项目的著... 近年来,在社会科学的协作配合下,渔业治理取得了长足进步。而"参与治理"和强调管理责任由政府和通常位于基层层面的用户群共同承担的"共同管理制度"在渔业治理工作中尤其受到关注。随着两部借鉴了同一国际项目的著作——一部学术专著和一部应用者指南的出版,我们对渔业治理复杂性的认识向前迈进了一大步。我们需要认清三个彼此独立又相互联系的治理层面:一是日常管理事务的处理;二是制度安排;三是制定可持续发展渔业政策所需的概念、价值、原则和标准的构建。本文笔者的论点是决策制定者将太多精力放在政策过程的最终阶段,而忽视了原则改善,而这些原则恰恰是在面对通常情况下都十分困难的选择时能够做出科学决策的基础。这一领域的许多进步都得益于社会科学遵从的多学科研究方法。 展开更多
