Thanks to musical analysis we are able to trace the compos technique, or assess the artistic value of given work. In addition to traditional, descriptive methods of e it ody, onal music analysis, we can observe in 20th century the development of methods based on science (mathematics, otherwise statistics). Such methodologies allow us to obtain a strict understanding of the structure of musical pieces Applying mathematical methods for musical analysis seems very reasonable in relation to the output of Frederic Chopin, due to large originality of the elements of musical pieces of this composer. Present paper was written as a result of research related to the applying of numerical method of analysis for exploring the tonal structure of Chopin's works. The author's research method enables a strict analysis of the chord's domination that can be classified under given key (range)--taking into consideration the harmonic functions. By the method of analysis we can get charts that depict whole diatonic vertical music material of the given piece. The main objective of the present study is to describe observations on the high uniqueness in the tonal construction of selected Chopin's mazurkas, especially, when compared to the miniatures of other composers of the first half of the 19th century and previously analyzed Chopin's pieces: etudes, preludes, and songs.展开更多

To solve these problems and contradictions, high importance should be attached to the art departments of many colleges and universities, and also a series of solutions should be actively sought. Meanwhile, the teaching objective should be made more clearly, the evaluation standards should be improved, and educational ideas should be timely updated. In this paper, many problems exposed in the music performance course of the musicology program in the art departments of many colleges and universities are analyzed, and also a series of feasible countermeasures are proposed.展开更多

According to China's national conditions and the characteristics of the cultures, improve the research methodology of the national musicology, so that the national musicology can have the Chinese characteristics. The national musicology is an independent basic discipline in the university education. In China, the music education and research work in colleges and universities has an important role in the inheritance and development of the national music. In this paper, combined with the present situations of the music education in colleges and universities, from the perspectives of the education and the research, the author expounds the ideas of the development trends of the national musicology in the music education in colleges and universities.展开更多

The goal of the project is to ascertain our current understanding of tonal music by means of algorithmic music generation. The method followed consists of four stages: 1) selection of music-theoretical insights, 2) translation of these insights into a set of principles, 3) conversion of the principles into a computational model having the form of an algorithm for music generation, 4) testing the “music” generated by the algorithm to evaluate the adequacy of the model. As an example, the method is implemented in Melody Generator, an algorithm for generating tonal melodies. The program has a structure suited for generating, displaying, playing and storing melodies, functions which are all accessible via a dedicated interface. The actual generation of melodies, is based in part on constraints imposed by the tonal context, i.e. by meter and key, the settings of which are controlled by means of parameters on the interface. For another part, it is based upon a set of construction principles including the notion of a hierarchical organization, and the idea that melodies consist of a skeleton that may be elaborated in various ways. After these aspects were implemented as specific sub-algorithms, the device produces simple but well-structured tonal melodies.展开更多

It bears various implications of dying and the notion of mortality is both literal and metaphorical. It is highly autobiographical and serves as a theatrical stage for Bowie to act both as a music performer and as a self-conscious human being. In this paper, we discuss the signs of mortality in Bowie's "Black Star" music video-clip. We focus on video's cinematic techniques and codes (editing, mise-en-sc6ne), on its motivic elements and on its narrative in relation with music, lyrics, characters, and gestures. We also discuss the video's intertextual references and the broader signification of the black star figure. We adopt a quasi-semiotic approach considering "Black Star" music video-clip as a text which can be investigated through its signs, codes, and conventions of the musical, visual, and cinematic languages as well. Our interdisciplinary tools derive from visual semiotics and audiovisual analysis models (Barthes 1977; Goodwin 1992; Vernallis 2001, 2004), without leaving outside Bowie's musical-artistic and personal history. As it turns out, Bowie created a video clip that is philosophical in nature and poetic in structure, preserving the role of protagonist. With the visuals creating a psychedelic atmosphere, the lyrics often are heard as a personal confession. They both generate cognitive and emotional responses that influence the way the viewers-listeners may experience, decompose, and interpret Bowie's artistic endeavor bridging life and death.展开更多
