The Nest of Torquigener Albomaculosus:Fluid-Dynamic Aspects and Potential for Bio-Inspired Engineering

Torquigener albomaculosus,also known as the white-spotted pufferfish,is known for creating circular nests in the underwater sand as part of the mating ritual.The nests are built by the males to attract females through the nest’s impressive design and related ability to gather fine sand particles.As the fluid-dynamic processes associated with these unique nests are still almost completely unknown,in the present study,an analysis has been conducted to investigate how the geometric parameters related to the nest design influence the fluid velocity in its center.For this reason,a geometric model of the nest consisting of 24 channels,where each unit channel can be described by three strips of broken lines,has been introduced,and a multivariate analysis has been implemented to determine the relative weight of each considered parameter.In particular,the“optimal”combination of parameters has been obtained by means of an orthogonal design approach.We show that these bio-nest structures also display a potential for significant application in marine litter collection,or for use as a buffer against the waves in offshore areas.

This article focuses on an important aspect of the Son of God and redeeemer of humanity,who became man in the incarnation.The study delves into the human dimension of Jesus Christ as a man for others and with others.His closeness to fellow men and women is striking.This closeness is accomplished through his pedagogical method by means of the stories(parables)he vividly narrated,as well as through the miracles he astonishingly carried out to help or heal others.Both parables and miracles lie at the basis of his proclamation of the Kingdom of God.Jesus was particularly close to those who were at the fringes of society.Jesus’social behaviour is also highlighted,with special reference to his especially unique style of table fellowship,going counter to the strict norms of his people.The climax of his being for others and with others is reached in his paschal mystery,namely his total self-offering in his passion,death and resurrection from the dead.

Alternate Reality of the Lady of Shalott

The Lady of Shalott is considered to be one of Alfred Lord Tennyson’s masterpieces.The poem conversely demonstrates art and life,the aesthetic and the political,are fully interwoven:the involvement in the social world which is symbolically the destination of the Lady in the poem.The Lady who is the emblem of such an artwork can be ascribed qualities,for instance,self-containment,objectified otherness,removal from the fluidity of life,and participation in a higher order of existence,for which it is autonomy.Kermode points out that“the Romantic artwork often identifies itself with an emblematic image of autonomy and femininity”,inextricably interlinked.Her mirror shows her only“Shadows of the world”.The Lady’s web flies“Out”and floats“wide”when she“turns round”with“that desire of making an impression upon another mind”,when she seeks to address Lancelot.The mirror reconnects the Lady’s art to the real world beyond her window.Though the artist is unable to see it during the process of production,her artistic web,once out in a wider space than the tower and freed from the loom,is a true representation of outward things,the actions,and events of Camelot.This paper examines that the traditional referentiality of Tennyson’s‘The Lady of Shalott’can be better understood by supplementing the poet’s medieval sources,of little more than tangential relevance to the poem,with Homeric influences.The poem is similar to a fairytale,however,I have given an alternate reality of the Lady of Shallot in my version of a fairytale,where the characters remain the same but the fairytale takes a happy ending rather than a tragic death.My version is different from Tennyson’s since I believe the lady deserves to be jovial.Sir Lancelot was unaware of her fascination and feelings for him,as she could hardly express her feelings due to her imprisonment.She is so taken by him that she stops her work and looks at Camelot,though she risks the mysterious curse.The mirror breaks and her web magically floats out of the window on its own.She realizes that she is cursed.

Two Christological Documents on Their Approaching 25th Anniversary: Dominus Iesus (2000) and Chapter Two of Novo Millennio Ineunte (2001)-Comparing and Contrasting Their Tone and Content

Within the span of five months during the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000,the Catholic Church published two documents focused on Jesus Christ:Dominus Iesus and Novo Millennio Ineunte(with emphasis in this article on its second chapter).Although in various instances,both documents converge and deal with the same subject,one can observe how the perspectives and attitudes expressed in both differ in various ways.Their aim is different because Dominus Iesus was issued to oppose certain erroneous positions in the context of theories of religious pluralism,while Novo Millennio Ineunte is a pastoral reflection on the fruits of the Jubilee and the state of the community of Christ’s faithful at the turn of the last century.This article seeks to address the content of the two documents,while highlighting the differences in their style and approach.

Mysteries of Solar System Explained by WUM

Hypersphere World-Universe Model (WUM) envisions Matter carried from Universe into World from fourth spatial dimension by Dark Matter Particles (DMPs). Luminous Matter is byproduct of Dark Matter (DM) annihilation. WUM introduces Dark Epoch (spanning from Beginning of World for 0.4 billion years) when only DMPs existed, and Luminous Epoch (ever since for 13.8 billion years). Big Bang discussed in standard cosmological model is, in our view, transition from Dark Epoch to Luminous Epoch due to Rotational Fission of Overspinning DM Supercluster’s Cores and annihilation of DMPs. WUM solves a number of physical problems in contemporary Cosmology and Astrophysics through DMPs and their interactions: Angular Momentum problem in birth and subsequent evolution of Galaxies and Extrasolar systems—how do they obtain it;Fermi Bubbles—two large structures in gamma-rays and X-rays above and below Galactic center;Mysterious Star KIC 8462852 with irregular dimmings;Coronal Heating problem in solar physics—temperature of Sun’s corona exceeding that of photosphere by millions of degrees;Cores of Sun and Earth rotating faster than their surfaces;Diversity of Gravitationally-Rounded Objects in Solar system and their Internal Heat;Lightning Initiation problem—electric fields observed inside thunderstorms are not sufficient to initiate sparks;Terrestrial Gamma-Ray Flashes—bursts of high energy X-rays and gamma rays emanating from Earth. Model makes predictions pertaining to Masses of DMPs, proposes New Types of their Interactions. WUM reveals Inter-Connectivity of Primary Cosmological Parameters and calculates their values, which are in good agreement with the latest results of their measurements.

Mysteries and Mysticism in the Arabian Desert

Saudi Arabia is rich not only in its oil, but also in its cultural heritages. With 1,500 rock arts and 4,000 archaeological sites it is the fourth largest rock art region in the world. The entire Saudi Arabia has been comprehensively surveyed, investigated, and documented under the auspices of the Saudi Arabian Department of Antiquities （now Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities）. The archaeological and rock art investigations revealed tantalizing results providing the evidence of human presence in the Arabian Peninsula from the early Acheulean period until the present day. In addition to the ancient towns and cities like Madain Saleh （contemporary to Petra in Jordan）, Tayma, Domat al-Jandal, Thaj, and al-Fao and Ukhdoud hundreds of strange, mysterious, and mystic structures and petrolyghs are located in the deserts of Arabia. A few of such sites are discussed in this paper, highlighting the strong but still unknown to the world the cultural heritage of Saudi Arabia.

A Historical Review of Robert van Gulik and His Judge Dee Mysteries in Chinese World （1996-2016）

Judge Dee Mysteries was written by a Dutch diplomat and orientalist Robert van Gulik, and has been translated into more than twenty languages, gaining a wide attention with the honorary title of ＂Orienta/Sherlock Holmes＂ in English world. It returned to China with Chen Laiyuan and Hu Ming＇s translations in 1980s, and since then there emerged various studies by Chinese scholars on Robert van Gulik and his works. This article makes a historical review of Judge Dee Mysteries in Chinese world during the past 20 years, presents problems in translating and introducing Robert van Gulik in Chinese, and proposes comments and suggestions for further translation and studies of Judge Dee Mysteries in a comparison with Chinese gong＇an fictions.

A Hidden Telete:Mythological Images as Symbols of Initiation in Roman Wall Paintings and Mosaics

Initiation was one of the most substantial experiences undergone in Antiquity.The term Les rites de passage introduced by Arnold van Gennep,accommodates the multifaceted significance of initiation in the social structure.The two main aspects of initiation were defined as the social and that which belonged to the religious sphere;or,the profane and the sacred.Initiation or rites of passage in the social realm were intended to delineate the transition from childhood to adult status,while the sacred initiation was intended to promise eternal life and a merging with the divine.As van Gennep has indicated,however,acts of apprenticeship of any kind were enveloped in ceremonies,since no act was entirely free of the sacred.Sacred initiations were intended to remain secret in Antiquity,thus explicit depictions of sacred rituals are rare in ancient art.As this study will demonstrate,however,signifiers of such initiation can nonetheless be found in Roman wall paintings and mosaics depicting mythological protagonists.The point of departure here is that initiation is the main issue manifested metaphorically in the depictions under discussion,with the sacred initiation rather than the social mostly featuring in the visual images.The analysis is based on literary and philosophical sources,and focuses on four personalities:Narcissus,Endymion,and Achilles,who are represented in their mythological context on wall paintings from Pompeii,and Heracles,who is shown in Roman mosaics in a scene familiar as the“Drinking Contest between Heracles and Dionysus”.
