Nanohairs, which can be found on the epidermis of Tokay gecko's toes, contribute to the adhesion by means of van der Waals force, capillary force, etc. This structure has inspired many researchers to fabricate the attachable nano-scale structures. However, the efficiency of artificial nano-scale structures is not reliable sufficiently. Moreover, the mechanical parameters related to the nano-hair attachment are not yet revealed qualitatively. The mechanical parameters which have influence on the ability of adhesive nano-hairs were investigated through numerical simulation in which only van der Waals force was considered. For the numerical analysis, finite element method was utilized and van der Waals force, assumed as 12-6 Lennard-Jones potential, was implemented as the body force term in the finite element formulation. 展开更多

Surface roughness plays a significant role in floatability of coal.In the present paper, coking coal surface was polished by three different sandpapers and the surface properties were characterized by contact angle and roughness measurements. The effect of surface roughness on floatability was investigated by adhesion force measurement system for measuring interaction forces between droplets/bubbles and coking coal surfaces with different roughness. The results showed that the contact angle decreased with increasing roughness yet the adhesion force between the water droplet and coal surface increased owing to the increased contact line and the appearance of line pinning.Maximum adhesion forces between water and surfaces were 111.70,125.48,and 136.42μN when the roughness was 0.23,0.98,and 2.79 μm,respectively. In contrast, under a liquid environment, the adhesion forces between air bubble/oil droplet and coal surfaces were decreased with increasing roughness because of the restriction by water.Maximum adhesion forces of increasing roughness were 97.14,42.76,and 17.86 μN measured at interfaces between air bubble and coal surfaces and 169.48,145.84,and 121.02 lN between oil droplet and surfaces, respectively.Decreasing roughness could be beneficial to the spreading of oil droplets and the adhesion of bubbles which is conducive to flotation separation. 展开更多

Interparticle adhesion force has a controlling effect on the physical and mechanical properties of planetary regolith and rocks. The current research on the adhesion force of planetary regolith and rock particles has been primarily based on the assumption of smooth spherical particles to calculate the intergranular adhesion force;this approach lacks consideration for the adhesion force between irregular shaped particles. In our study,an innovative approach was established to directly measure the adhesion force between the arbitrary irregular shaped particles;the probe was modified using simulated lunar soil particles that were a typical representation of planetary regolith. The experimental results showed that for irregular shaped mineral particles, the particle size and mineral composition had no significant influence on the interparticle adhesion force;however, the complex morphology of the contact surface predominantly controlled the adhesion force. As the contact surface roughness increased, the adhesion force gradually decreased, and the rate of decrease gradually slowed;these results were consistent with the change trend predicted via the theoretical models of quantum electrodynamics. Moreover,a theoretical model to predict the adhesion force between the irregular shaped particles was constructed based on Rabinovich’s theory, and the prediction results were correlated with the experimental measurements. 展开更多

In micro-manipulation, the adhesion force has very important influence on behaviors of micro-objects. Here, a theoretical study on the effects of humidity on the adhesion force is presented between atomic force microscope (AFM) tips and substrate. The analysis shows that the precise tip geometry plays a critical role on humidity depen- dence of the adhesion force, which is the dominant factor in manipulating micro-objects in AFM experiments. For a blunt (paraboloid) tip, the adhesion force versus humidity curves tends to the apparent contrast (peak-to-valley corrugation) with a broad range. This paper demonstrates that the abrupt change of the adhesion force has high correla- tion with probe curvatures, which is mediated by coordinates of solid-liquid-vapor contact lines (triple point) on the probe profiles. The study provides insights for further under- standing nanoscale adhesion forces and the way to choose probe shapes in manipulating micro-objects in AFM experiments. 展开更多

Micro-sized silicon anodes have shown much promise in large-scale industrial production of high-energy lithium batteries. However, large volume change(>300%)of silicon anodes causes severe particle pulverization and the formation of unstable solid electrolyte interphases during cycling, leading to rapid capacity decay and short cycle life of lithium-ion batteries. When addressing such issues, binder plays key roles in obtaining good structural integrity of silicon anodes.Herein,we report a biopolymer composite binder composed of rigid poly(acrylic acid)(PAA)and flexible silk fibroin(SF)tailored for micro-sized silicon anodes. The PAA/SF binder shows robust gradient binding energy via chemical interactions between carboxyl and amide groups, which can effectively accommodate large volume change of silicon. This PAA/SF binder also shows much stronger adhesion force and improved binding towards high-surface/defective carbon additives, resulting in better electrochemical stability and higher coulombic efficiency, than conventional PAA binder. As such,micro-sized silicon/carbon anodes fabricated with novel PAA/SF binder exhibit much better cyclability(up to 500 cycles at 0.5 C)and enhanced rate capability compared with conventional PAA-based anodes. This work provides new insights into the design of functional binders for high-capacity electrodes suffering from large volume change for the development of nextgeneration lithium batteries. 展开更多

Cells actively sense and respond to mechanical signals from the extracellular matrix through focal adhesions. By representing a single focal adhesion as a cluster of slip bonds, it has been demonstrated that the cluster often became unstable under fluctuated forces. However, an unusual case was also reported, where the stability of the cluster might be substantially enhanced by a fluctuated force with a relatively low fluctuation frequency and high fluctuation amplitude.Such an observation cannot be explained by the conventional fracture theory of fatigue. Here, we intensively investigate this intriguing observation by carrying out systematic parametric studies. Our intensive simulation results indicate that stability enhancement of this kind is in fact quite robust, which can be affected by the stochastic features of a single bond and the profile of the fluctuated forces such as the average value of bond force. We then suggest that the fluctuation of traction force within a focal adhesion might enhance its stability in a certain way. 展开更多

Variation of the surface adhesion force during the formation of octadecyl trichlorosilane (OTS) self-assembled monolayer on a glass substrate surface was investigated by atomic force microscope (AFM). The research shows that the hydrophobicity and the adhesion force of the sample surface increases gradually while the substrate surface is covered by OTS molecules as the reaction proceeds. After 15min reaction, a close-packed and smooth OTS self-assembled monolayer could form on the glass substrate surface with an advancing contact angle of 105° and an interfacial energy of 55.79mJ·m-2. 展开更多

This paper continues our recent work on the relationship between discrete contact interactions at the microscopic scale and continuum contact interactions at the macroscopic scale (Hulikal et al., J. Mech. Phys. Solids 76, 144-161, 2015). The focus of this work is on adhesion. We show that a collection of a large number of discrete elements governed by a threshold-force based model at the microscopic scale collectively gives rise to continuum fracture mechanics at the macroscopic scale. A key step is the introduction of an efficient numerical method that enables the computation of a large number of discrete contacts. Finally, while this work focuses on scaling laws, the methodology introduced in this paper can also be used to study rough-surface adhesion. 展开更多

Adhesion of oil at rock surface plays an important role in the liberation of oil from micro-/nano-pores,especially for heavy oil that has extremely high viscosity.Although molecular dynamics simulation is widely used to study the interfacial interaction for some specific oil-water-rock systems, experimental measurements provide more realistic and reliable evidence. In this work,we propose a dynamic wettability characterization method to indirectly measure resistant forces at oil-surfactant-rock interfaces, including frictional force, wettability hysteresis force, and viscous force, which are parallel with the oil-solid interface. The adhesive force, which is normal to the oil-solid interface is calculated through measurement of work of adhesion. The results show that work of adhesion instead of contact angle can better describe the adhesion of oil at solid surface. The effect of surfactant concentration on work of adhesion is different for water-wet and oil-wet surfaces. Moreover, average viscous forces are calculated through force analysis on oil drops moving along solid surface in different surfactant environments. It is found that viscous force has a magnitude comparable to the frictional force during the movement, while the wettability hysteresis force is negligible. On the other hand, the adhesive force calculated from the work of adhesion is also comparable to the viscous force. Therefore, both the resistant forces parallel with and normal to the oil-solid interface should be minimized for the liberation of oil from rock surface. This work proposes a simple method to evaluate the wetting capability of different surfactants and measure the adhesive force between heavy oil and rock surfaces indirectly, which provides insight into the adhesion of heavy oil at rock surface and would be valuable for the development of surfactant-based oil recovery methods. 展开更多

Reasonable distribution of braking force is a factor for a smooth, safe, and comfortable braking of trains.A dynamic optimal allocation strategy of electric-air braking force is proposed in this paper to solve the problem of the lack of consideration of adhesion difference of train wheelsets in the existing high-speed train electric-air braking force optimal allocation strategies. In this method, the braking strategy gives priority to the use of electric braking force. The force model of a single train in the braking process is analyzed to calculate the change of adhesion between the wheel and rail of each wheelset after axle load transfer, and then the adhesion of the train is estimated in real time.Next, with the goal of maximizing the total adhesion utilization ratio of trailer/motor vehicles,a linear programming distribution function is constructed. The proportional coefficient of adhesion utilization ratio of each train and the application upper limit of braking force in the function is updated according to the change time point of wheelset adhesion. Finally, the braking force is dynamically allocated. The simulation results of Matlab/Simulink show that the proposed algorithm not only uses the different adhesion limits of each trailer to reduce the total amount of braking force undertaken by the motor vehicle, but also considers the adhesion difference of each wheelset. The strategy can effectively reduce the risk and time of motor vehicles during the braking process and improve the stability of the train braking. 展开更多

Aluminum foam is widely used in diverse areas to minimize the weight and maximize the absorption of shock energy in lightweight structures and various bio-materials.It presents a number of advantages, such as low density,incombustibility,non-rigidity,excellent energy absorptivity, sound absorptivity and low heat conductivity. The aluminum foam with an air cell structure was placed under the TDCB Mode II tensile load by using Landmark equipment manufactured by MTS to examine the shear failure behavior. The angle of the tapered adhesively-bonded surfaces of specimens was designated as a variable, and three models were developed with the inclined angles differing from one another at 6°,8° and 10°.The specimens with the inclined angles of 6°,8° and 10° have the maximum reaction forces of 168 N,194 N when the forced displacements are 6,5 and 4.2 mm respectively. There are three specimens with the inclined angles of 10°,8° and 6° in the order of maximum reaction force. As the analysis result, the maximum equivalent stresses of 0.813 MPa and 0.895 MPa happened when the forced displacements of 6 mm and 5 mm proceeded at the models of 6° and 8°,respectively.A simulation was carried out on the basis of finite element method and the experimental design. The results of the experiment and the simulation analysis are shown not different from each other significantly. Thus, only a simulation could be confirmed to be performed in substitution of an experiment, which is costly and time-consuming in order to determine the shearing properties of materials made of aluminum foam with artificial data. 展开更多

Accurate quantification of external force is the key to improve the high-precision hemming of autobody closure panels. However, the mechanism of external force on forming quality of complex contour sheet metal with adhesive is not clear subjected to geometric curvature and materials. In the present study, taking the curved edge aluminum sheet as the research object,SPH(smooth particle hydrodynamics)is introduced to simulate the viscous adhesive, and the SPH-FEM(Finite element method)coupling model of adhesive and panels considering the viscosity-pressure effect is established. The numerical simulation of the roller hemming process is carried out, then the validity and reliability of the proposed method are verified by measuring the external force in real time using triaxial force sensor. The multi-step forming process and the effect of external force on the roll in/out,surface wave and plastic strain of aluminum alloy sheet under the viscosity-pressure effect are studied, and the relationship between process parameters and external force is discussed. Results show that the coupling SPH-FEM model can well reflect the hemming process of curved edge structure. The normal force is about 2–3 times of the tangential force in the pre and final hemming process.Compared with the case without adhesive, the surface wave of flange part of the hemming with adhesive is slightly larger. The normal force and the tangential force increase about 90 N and 30 N respectively, when the height increases by 1 mm.It provides an important basis for the accurate control of hemming trajectory and the improvement of manufacturing quality of autobody closure panels. 展开更多

The surface and adhesion forces between chitosan- coated mica surfaces in an acetic acid buffer solution were measured using a surface force apparatus (SFA). The force- distance profiles were obtained under different pressure conditions. It was found that the chitosan was adsorbed on the mica surface and formed a stable nanofilm under acid conditions. The adsorbed chitosan nanofilms induced a short- range monotonically steric force when two such surfaces came close in the acid buffer. The adhesion forces between the two chitosan-coated mica surfaces varied with the loads. Strong adhesion between the two chitosan-coated mica surfaces was observed at high pressure. Such pressure-dependent adhesion properties are most likely related to the molecular configurations and hydrogen bonds reordering under high confinement. 展开更多

The model and analysis of the cantilever beam adhesion problem under the action of electrostatic force are given. Owing to the nonlinearity of electrostatic force, the analytical solution for this kind of problem is not available. In this paper, a systematic method of generating polynomials which are the exact beam solutions of the loads with di?erent distributions is provided. The polynomials are used to approximate the beam displacement due to electrostatic force. The equilibrium equation o?ers an answer to how the beam deforms but no information about the unstuck length. The derivative of the functional with respect to the unstuck length o?ers such information. But to compute the functional it is necessary to know the beam deformation. So the problem is iteratively solved until the results are converged. Galerkin and Newton-Raphson methods are used to solve this nonlinear problem. The e?ects of dielectric layer thickness and electrostatic voltage on the cantilever beam stiction are studied. The method provided in this paper exhibits good convergence. For the adhesion problem of cantilever beam without electrostatic voltage, the analytical solution is available and is also exactly matched by the computational results given by the method presented in this paper. 展开更多

Plant leaves, insects and geckos are masters of adhesion or anti-adhesion by smartly designed refined surface structures with micro- and nano- 'technologies'. Understanding the basic principles in the design of the unique surface structures is of great importance in the manufacture or synthesis of micro- and nano- devices in MEMS or NEMS. This study is right inspired by this effort, focusing on the mechanics of wet adhesion between fibers having concave tips and a flat substrate via capillary forces. We show that the concave surface can effectively enhance the wet adhesion by reducing the effective contact angle of the fiber, firmly pinning the liquid bridge at its circumferential edge. A critical contact angle is identified below which the adhesion strength can achieve its maximum, being insensitive to the contact angle between the fiber and liquid. The analytical expression for the critical angle is derived. Then a tentative design for the profile of concave surfaces is proposed, considering the effects of chamfering size, deformation and buckling, etc. The effect of liquid volume on the wet adhesion of multiple-fiber system is also discussed. 展开更多

Properties of shale in an acid environment are important when acid or CO2 is injected into geologic formations as a working fluid for enhanced oil and gas recovery, hydraulic fracturing and reduced fracture initiation pressure. It has previously been shown that acid fluids can enhance the formation conductivity and decrease the hardness of shale. However, less is known about the effect of dilute acid on the adhesion properties of shale. In the study, shale samples are characterized in detail with advanced analysis.Adhesion properties of shale via dilute acid treatment were revealed by atomic force microscopy(AFM)for the first time. Results indicate that acid treatment can greatly enhance adhesion forces of the shale surface. After acid treatment, the average adhesion forces show a platform-like growth with an increase in loading force.Through analysis of results from AFM,scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction,we affirm that the enhanced adhesion forces are mainly from increased specific surface area and reduced elastic modulus. The results presented in this work help understand the adhesion properties of shale oil/gas present in an acidic environment, which have great significance in unconventional resources development. 展开更多

The adhesion between the mining machine and the deep-sea sediments will significantly affect the driving performance of the mining machine in the deep-sea environment. When the mining machine and the deep-sea sediment interaction simulation was carried out,the accuracy of the particle interaction parameters will directly affect the simulation results. This study proposed a method to systematically calibrate the interaction parameters between deep-sea sediment and grouser through the combination of experiment and simulation. The uniaxial compression test and macro adhesion test and corresponding discrete element numerical simulation were carried out, modifying the contact parameters until the simulation results are close to the experimental results. Then the micro-parameters of the JKR adhesion contact model were back calibrated with the test results, and the contact parameters between soil particle-soil particle and soil particle-metal are calibrated.Besides, the adhesion test shows that the adhesion forces were ranked in the order of 5052<STi80<TA2<TC4 under the same surface roughness, which indicates the aluminum alloy 5052 has the best anti-adhesion performance. The relationship between surface adhesion force and microscopic contact parameters was studied by discrete element numerical simulation, and the result shows that the coefficient of static friction and the coefficient of rolling friction has little effect on adhesion force. While it is mainly affected by the coefficient of restitution and surface energy, the surface adhesion force tends to decrease with the increase of the coefficient of restitution and increase with the growth of surface energy. The obtained parameters of soil particle to soil particle and soil particle to metal affecting the adhesion can contribute to the design optimization for the grouser of mining machines to decrease surface adhesion and enhance its movability and mining efficiency. 展开更多

We propose a wavelet method to analyze the stochastic-elastic problem of specific adhesion between two elastic solids via ligand-receptor bond clusters, which is governed by a nonlinear integro-differential equation with a sin- gular Cauchy kernel to describe the mean-field coupling between deformation of elastic materials and stochastic behavior of the molecular bonds. To solve this problem, Galerkin method based on a wavelet approximation scheme is adopted, and special treatment which transforms the singular Cauchy kernel into a smooth one has been proposed to avoid the cumbersome calculation of singular integrals. Numerical results demonstrate that the method is fully capable of solving the specific adhesion problems with complex nonlinear and singular equations. Based on the proposed method, investigations are performed to reveal the relation between steady-state pulling force and mean surface separation under different stress concentration indexes, which is crucial for assembling the overall constitutive relations for multicellular tumor spheroids and polymer-matrix microcomposites. 展开更多

Adhesion of bio-inspired microfibre arrays to a rough surface is studied theoretically. The array consists of vertical elastic rods fixed on a rigid backing layer, and the surface is modeled by rigid steps with a normally distributed height. Analytical expressions are obtained for the adhesion forces in both the approach and retraction processes. It is shown that, with the increasing preload, the pull-off force increases at first and then attains a plateau value.
