BACKGROUND Lung cancer is a common disease with high mortality, and psychological support is very important in the diagnosis and treatment of postoperative patients with cancer pain.AIM To explore the application effect of the narrative nursing method in postoperative lung cancer patients in the intensive care unit.METHODS A total of 120 patients diagnosed with lung cancer and experiencing cancer-related pain were randomly allocated into two groups:an observation group and a control group, each consisting of 60 cases. The control group was given routine analgesic and psychological care, while the research group applied the five-step narrative nursing method based on routine care, comparing the visual analogue scale scores, sleep status, anxiety and depression status, and quality of life of the two groups of patients before and after the intervention.RESULTS The pain scores, anxiety scores, and depression scores of the study group were lower than those of the control group after the intervention using the narrative nursing method, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).CONCLUSION Using narrative nursing methods to intervene in patients with lung cancer combined with cancerous pain can help patients to correctly recognize their disease, adjust their mentality, establish confidence, alleviate patients'subjective pain feelings, and improve their adverse emotions. 展开更多

Aims:Health democracy requires tools and methodologies to involve non-scientific actors in the development and implementation of health policies.Storytelling could be one of the tools to make health democracy effective. Our aim is to describe how storytelling is used in relation to health democracy, the aims of its use,the methodology adopted and the results obtained.Procedure:We conducted a narrative review of the literature. Our search equation was composed by the keyword“narration”and its variations“récit de vie”,“histoire de vie”and“medécine narrative”and by the keyword“démocratie en santé”/“démocratie sanitaire”.Results:We obtained 135 results and included six articles, published between 2015 and 2022.The interest of storytelling in a health democracy approach concerns six main themes:a)the plurality of experiences;b)empowerment;c)the recognition of different types of knowledge;d)the involvement of all care actors in care;storytelling as a lever for change;e)in the care pathway;f)in health policies. Conclusion:The limited number of articles included in this literature review raises questions about the diffusion of the concept of health democracy associated with that of storytelling.Storytelling can contribute to the dissemination and effectiveness of health democracy:it is a complementary tool to quantitative tools for understanding the experiences of users of the health care system, and its use is particularly relevant to chronic diseases such as cancer. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Acute pancreatitis(AP),as a common acute abdomen disease, has a high incidence rate worldwide and is often accompanied by severe complications.Negative emotions lead to increased secretion of stress hormones, elevated blood sugar levels, and enhanced insulin resistance, which in turn increases the risk of AP and significantly affects the patient's quality of life. Therefore, exploring the intervention effects of narrative nursing programs on the negative emotions of patients with AP is not only helpful in alleviating psychological stress and improving quality of life but also has significant implications for improving disease outcomes and prognosis.AIM To construct a narrative nursing model for negative emotions in patients with AP and verify its efficacy in application.METHODS Through Delphi expert consultation,a narrative nursing model for negative emotions in patients with AP was constructed.A non-randomized quasi-experimental study design was used in this study.A total of 92 patients with AP with negative emotions admitted to a tertiary hospital in Nantong City of Jiangsu Province,China from September 2022 to August 2023 were recruited by convenience sampling, among whom 46 patients admitted from September 2022 to February 2023 were included in the observation group, and 46 patients from March to August 2023 were selected as control group. The observation group received narrative nursing plan, while the control group was given with routine nursing.Self-rating anxiety scale(SAS),self-rating depression scale(SDS),positive and negative affect scale(PANAS),caring behavior scale, patient satisfaction scale and 36-item short form health survey questionnaire(SF-36)were used to evaluate their emotions, satisfaction and caring behaviors in the two groups on the day of discharge,1-and 3-month following discharge.RESULTS According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria,a total of 45 cases in the intervention group and 44 cases in the control group eventually recruited and completed in the study. On the day of discharge, the intervention group showed significantly lower scores of SAS,SDS and negative emotion(28.57±4.52 vs 17.4±4.44,P<0.001),whereas evidently higher outcomes in the positive emotion score,Caring behavior scale score and satisfaction score compared to the control group(P<0.05).Repeated measurement analysis of variance showed that significant between-group differences were found in time effect,inter-group effect and interaction effect of SAS and PANAS scores as well as in time effect and inter-group effect of SF-36 scores(P<0.05);the SF-36 scores of two groups at 3 months after discharge were higher than those at 1 month after discharge(P<0.05).CONCLUSION The application of narrative nursing protocols has demonstrated significant effectiveness in alleviating anxiety, ameliorating negative emotions, and enhancing satisfaction among patients with AP. 展开更多

In the context of the cultural development of the new era and the burgeoning spiritual demands of the people, there has been a remarkable surge in the proliferation of traditional Chinese cultural programs. The“Chinese Festivals”series, produced by Henan TV,standing out as an engaging TV program that showcases traditional Chinese culture, has rapidly captivated a diverse audience across different age groups, creating a rich,multi-dimensional,and cross-media cultural communication ecosystem. The program strategically selects symbolic elements by systematically categorizing and organizing traditional Chinese cultural symbols to create a rich cultural space. It employs cutting-edge scientific and technological methods to enrich viewer immersion, crafting media rituals with both temporal significance and a profound sense of media ritual. This approach boosts the program’s popularity and sets a benchmark for industry innovation.By fostering an interactive narrative between mainstream media and the public, the program continuously broadens the scope of the“story world,”fostering a harmonious and structured national cultural community through the creative interpretation of traditional Chinese culture and the evocative crafting of the aesthetic sensibilities inherent in Chinese art.It is worth noting that the phenomenon of aesthetic fatigue besets the development of this serial program. To address this issue and further improve the appeal of the program,a comprehensive approach is required to develop a cohesive narrative mode for the“story world.”This involves harmonizing the interplay between artistic endeavors and technological advancements, synchronizing sensory experiences with the foundational ritualistic elements, and enhancing the effectiveness of the media communication matrix to construct a brand of media culture that has social significance, aesthetic value, and economic profits in the new era. 展开更多

Task-based Language Teaching(TBLT)research has provided ample evidence that cognitive complexity is an important aspect of task design that influences learner’s performance in terms of fluency, accuracy, and syntactic complexity.Despite the substantial number of empirical investigations into task complexity in journal articles, storyline complexity, one of the features of it,is scarcely investigated.Previous research mainly focused on the impact of storyline complexity on learners’oral performance, but the impact on learners’written performance is less investigated. Thus, this study aims at investigating the effects of narrative complexity of storyline on senior high school students’written performance,as displayed by its complexity, fluency, and accuracy. The present study has important pedagogical implications. That is,task design and assessment should make a distinction between different types of narrative tasks. For example, the task with single or dual storyline. Results on task complexity may contribute to informing the pedagogical choices made by teachers when prioritizing work with a specific linguistic dimension. 展开更多

Wharton’s novels serve as compelling cases for understanding the complexities of late 19th-century American society. The paper uses The Age of Innocence as an example to examine detailed depiction of the era’s social hierarchy, fashion, architecture, and the intricate social rituals that defined New York’s upper class. It explores the constraints and dilemmas women faced within a patriarchal society, highlighting Wharton’s personal experiences and her critical stance on the social norms of her time. The characters of Newland Archer,May Welland, and Ellen Olenska are analyzed to reveal the pressures of societal expectations and the struggles for individual desires within a rigid social structure.Additionally, the paper proposes various teaching methods, including contextual understanding, literary analysis with a historical focus, and historical research projects,to enhance students’comprehension of the cultural and historical context of the novel. These methods aim to immerse students in the narrative and promote their understanding of the Gilded Age’s social dynamics. 展开更多

Narrative empathy is a relatively new theory and it can guide researchers in the studies of main-melody films so as to promote the communication of the core values of the society. The rhetorical mechanism of narrative empathy can be illustrated from five rhetorical elements, including rhetor, rhetorical goal, rhetorical situation, rhetorical strategy and audience. The theory of narrative empathy can be applied to the case study of the film My People,My Country. In the production of this film, the directors are the rhetors. The rhetors uphold the tenet of closeness, choose the right rhetorical situation as the 70th birthday of the People’s Republic of China, and use appropriate rhetorical strategies in order to realize the rhetorical goals of evoking empathy and inspiring patriotic feelings in the audience’s minds. An exploration and application of narrative empathy can be conducive to the empathic communication of Chinese main-melody films in order to achieve better communication effect. 展开更多

Süskind’s “Perfume” constructs the story frame of the text through three sets of contradictory narratives, exploring the process of Grenouille, who is regarded as an alien by others, trying to find and construct true meaning of being a human being from three aspects: human smell, emotion, and discourse. This process constantly encounters deconstruction from its own smelllessness, senselessness and aphasia, thereby implying the lack of human subjectivity and value through Grenouille’s failure to find identity. It also uses the image of perfume to express the author’s deep concerns about the loss of subjectivity, the disillusionment of classical morality, and the violence of industrial civilization in France and even Europe in the eighteenth century. 展开更多

In the Heart of the Country, the second novel by J.M.Coetzee,has been traditionally read as a disembodied writing that focuses on the problem of writing per se instead of the reality. This paper contends that the work is actually a body narrative that explores the visceral pain suffered by Magda whose infertile body impedes her being a qualified subject. As the heroine in a postcolonial novel,Magda is not just a body that is restricted and constructed by the politics of the body, but also a thinking and writing body that consciously questions and resists the gendered bodily norms under whose yardstick her subjecthood is barred.Written in the metafictional manner,Magda’s narrative of the body is not just a record of her corporeal experience, but also a self-conscious negotiation with, and challenge of,the bodily norms under whose yardstick her body has been debased or,in terms of Judith Butler, abjected.Taking her female bodily experience as the starting point,Magda writes a feminine text that values passion, fluidity and non-linearity to disrupt the patriarchal discourse underpinned with logical reasoning. The feminine body narrative endeavors to achieve a new way of communication through which a reciprocal cross race/gender relationship might be established. 展开更多

Auspicious pulse diagnosis/pregnancy diagnosis in traditional Chinese medicine involves such issues as medical skills, narrative skills, family decency, and ethics. It is an excellent case for the exploration of ethical dilemmas in traditional Chinese medical practice. The early classical medical texts such as Su Wen(Basic Questions)and Ling Shu Jing(Spiritual Pivot Canon)provide a principle-based ethical guide for doctor-patient communication, while popular fiction such as Hong Lou Meng(A Dream of Red Mansions),Yu Mu Xing Xin Bian(Stories:Entertain to Enlighten),and Feng Yue Meng(Courtesans and Opium)in the Ming and Qing dynasties present literary examples for solving ethical dilemmas. This article will analyze these texts from three perspectives.First, the doctors in the text were subject to gender order and other delicate etiquette and customs, therefore were unable to make the diagnosis without embarrassing the patients and jeopardizing family decency.Second, the narrator tends to attribute pregnancy misdiagnosis to three reasons:incomplete patient information, doctors’poor narrative competence, and doctors’corrupted medical ethics. Finally, the Ming-Qing fiction proposes three methods to solve this moral dilemma:clear pulse reading, tactful speech, and taboo challenging. This discussion of moral dilemmas in pregnancy diagnosis in traditional Chinese medical practice can be used as a reference for the localization of narrative medicine. 展开更多
