The calculated results of the model show that the process is in the quasi-steady state, and the shape of pool remains unchanged when the height of ingot is approximately 2.5-3 times the thickness of slab ingot. The change in the shape of pool is found to be strongly dependent on the pattern of melting rate, and hence, the power input; the depth of the molten pool increases with the increase in melting speed. It is concluded that a transient heat transfer model has to be used to obtain reliable input information for the entire, operatina time.展开更多

The results show that the shape of ingot segregation of rod steel depends on the shape of continuous casting (CC) molds ,and that the distortion of gear steel with square ingot segregation is uniform, while that of gear steel with rectangular ingot segregation is anisotropic. After quenching, the outer circle of the ring sample with a large rectangular segregation area is distorted into an oval shape. No obvious element segregation has been found in the rod steel produced through the rectangular CC mold. Obvious difference in density has been detected at the cross section of rod steel. It suggests that center porosity may be the main reason for the strong impact of segregation on heat treatment distortion of gear steel.展开更多

The first, second, and third parts were produced by low-pressure die casting (Al-12Si-0.8Cu-0.5Fe-0.9Mg-0.7Ni-0.2Zn alloy), die casting (A356, A1-7Si-0.3Mg), and semi-solid casting (A356, A1-TSi-0.3Mg), respectively. Unlike die casting (second part), low-pressure die casting (first part) sig- nificantly reduced the formation of casting defects (i.e., porosity) due to its smooth filling and solidification under pressure. No significant casting defect was observed in the third part, and this absence of defects indicates that semi- solid casting could produce high-quality near-net shape casting aluminum parts. Moreover, casting defects were mostly distributed along the eutectic grain boundaries. This finding reveals that refinement of eutectic grains is necessary to optimize the distribution of casting defects and reduce their size. This investigation demonstrated that computed tomography is an efficient method to determine casting defects in near-net shape casting aluminum parts.展开更多

To eliminate the undesirable effects, a novel steel BRB is proposed. In this new-type steel BRB, two T-shaped steels are adopted as the minor restraint elements to restrain the core plate instead of infilled concrete or mortar. Meanwhile, the ingot-iron material with low yielding strength and high elongation is applied to the steel core to study the mechanical properties of steel BRBs. To validate the theoretical requirements for the width-to-thickness ratio of the steel core and the thickness of angle steel, quasi-static tests of eight specimens were conducted. The tests focused on the energy dissipation capacity and failure modes of the proposed steel BRBs. Nonlinear finite element analysis was also carried out to validate the experimental results. Both the aforementioned results imply that appropriately designed steel BRBs can meet the performance requirements for BRB components.展开更多

Near-net-shape processing involves the infiltration of preshaped porous green bodies of either 211 or yttria phases by liquids containing barium cuprates and copper oxides followed by a controlled peritectic solidification. The process yields poly- and also single-crystalline superconducting objects with a shrinkage of less than half of one percent of the green bodies. The preservation of the initial structure of the green bodies results in fabrication of RE 123 in a wide variety of dimensions and complex shapes. The demonstrated products include bulk components like cylinders, single domain thick films on a variety of substrates, freestanding fabrics and open porous superconducting foams. This paper presents a comprehensive description of the infiltration processing technique and the resulting microstructures of the superconducting bodies. The advantages of this technique and practical applications of the processed superconducting structures are highlighted.展开更多

In the NITE method, preform densification is essential option for damage less near-net shaping technique. However, optimization of preform densification is insufficient yet. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of pressure during preform densification on SiC/SiC composites. The preform before preform densification has many pores in the inter-prepreg sheets. These pores were disappeared by preform densification. As the effects of pressure on preform, densification in the intra-fiber-bundle was improved due to increasing pressure. Flexural strength of the preforms with 1 MPa and 17 MPa indicated almost same value. The result suggested that increasing of pressure did not cause any change in fiber properties. In the effects of pressure on the composites, the composites with 17 MPa was exhibited improvement in bulk density and mechanical property, compared with that with 1 MPa.展开更多
