Green stormwater infrastructure eco-planning and development on the regional scale： a case study of Shanghai Lingang New City, East China

Urban underlying surface has been greatly changed with rapid urbanization, considered to be one of the major causes for the destruction of urban natural hydrological processes. This has imposed a huge challenge for stormwater management in cities. There has been a shift from gray water management to green stormwater management thinking. The green stormwater infrastructure （GSI） is regarded as an effective and cost-efficient stormwater management eco-landscape approach. China＇s GSI practice and the development of its theoretical framework are still in the initial stage. This paper presents an innovative framework for stormwater management, integrating green stormwater infrastructure and landscape security patterns on a regional scale based on an urban master plan. The core concept of green stormwater infrastructure eco-planning is to form an interconnected GSI network （i.e., stormwater management landscape security pattern） which consists of the location, portion, size, layout, and structure of GSI so as to efficiently safeguard natural hydrological processes. Shanghai Lin- gang New City, a satellite new town of Shanghai, China was selected as a case study for GSI studies. Simulation analyses of hydrological processes were carried out to identify the critical significant landscape nodes in the high- priority watersheds for stormwater management. GSI should be planned and implemented in these identified landscape nodes. The comprehensive stormwater manage- ment landscape security pattern of Shanghai Lingang New City is designed with consideration of flood control, stormwater control, runoff reduction, water quality protec- tion, and rainwater utilization objectives which couldprovide guidelines for smart growth and sustainable development of this city.

Practical Signii cance of General Urban Design:Analyses and Reflections on Qingpu New City

General urban design is targeted at the urban environment, which includes identifying the relationship between landscape elements and spatial structure, and guiding and controlling open spaces, architectural features, and important landscape areas and elements. By applying the general urban design results into planning practices, the unique townscape with local characteristics can be shaped gradually through effective guidance on urban spaces. This paper, based on the practice of general urban design in Qingpu New City, provides a systematic analysis on the general urban design from the perspectives of the structure of urban spaces, the landscape control of key areas, the design guidelines and elements, and so forth.

Chinese markets play an important social role in the long history and are important places for currency circulation,human communication and cultural collision.However,with the acceleration of urbanization,market civilization has gradually faded.In this study,the current situation of a remaining market in Qingdao Development Zone was surveyed,and the problems of the market were discussed.Meanwhile,the reasons for the formation and survival of the market were analyzed,and some strategies to transform the market were put forward to find a way out for the development of the same type of markets in China.

New Discovery of Shizhushan Superlarge Wollastonite Deposit in Xinyu City, Jiangxi Province

Objective The Mengshan area of the Xinyu City, Jiangxi Province is an important wollastonite production base in China. As early as the 90s of the 20th century, more than ten medium to small-sized wollastonite deposits, such as the Yueguangshan and Caofangmiao Deposits were discovered in the outer contact zone of the Mengshan rock mass. After that, no more progress was achieved in wollastonite prospection. In 2016, the project funded by the Geological Prospecting Fund of Jiangxi Province made significant breakthroughs in the ＂General Survey of the Shizhushan Wollastonite Ore in the Yushui District and Zhangmuqiao Wollastonite Ore in Shanggao County, Xinyu City, Jiangxi Province＂ in the Mengshan area. The new discovered Shizhushan Wollastonite Deposit has a scale of 50 million tons and its resources scale far exceeds that of the Seeleys Bay Wollastonite Deposit discovered in Canada.

Urban Poetics in John Updike’s Sonnet“New York City”

Based on Robert E.Park’s theoretical frame of social urban study,the“psychophysical mechanism”,urban poetics mainly researches the mutual relations between the physical and the moral organizations of a city in urban poems,novels and dramas.This article considers John Updike as an urban poet since his poem collection Americana(2001)is a collection of urban poems.One of the representative poems,the sonnet“New York City”,depicts a despairing“separate nation”by presenting three typical physical cityscapes:television,beggars and skyscrapers.Each physical cityscape reveals its cultural value and social tradition of the city,and the psychological problems of the city dwellers.Tracing Updike’s personal urban experience and the poem’s intertextual space,this article explores his criticism on American big city:the alienated human relations,the anxiety of city life and the smallness of solipsism.His intention to parody John Milton’s Pandemonium in Paradise Lost,and to pay homage to Walt Whitman,reveals that this sonnet embodies rich connotations of urban poetics.

Site Effect Estimation Using Microtremor Measurements at New Luxor City Proposed Site, South Egypt*

The present study aims mainly at investigating the site effect at the new Luxor city, Egypt, using microtremor measurements. Accordingly, 41 ambient noise recordings were implemented covering the investigated area in a reasonable manner with spacing nearly 1 km between each measurement station. The data were analyzed using Nakamura’s technique. The results show that;the investigated area exhibits low fundamental frequency values ranging between 0.28 - 0.47 Hz and its corresponding amplification factor values vary between 2.3 and 6.8. Consequently, the studied site is characterized by the presence of thick soft sediments overlying a hard bed rock. The seismic vulnerability index (Kg) was estimated, relying on the estimated fundamental frequency (F0) and amplification factor (A0), through the range between 11 and 95 across the mapped area. The obtained Kg values were noticed to be compatible with amplification level results. The central part of the investigated area reflects the higher Kg and A0 values.

Saul Bellow’s seventh novel Mr.Sammler’s Planet combines the urban narrative of New York City with the Holocaust narrative,revealing the crisis of postmodern American society.This paper explores Sammler’s unique perspective as a witness to the Holocaust history and the social phenomena of the 1960s,so as to excavate the characteristics of New York City.Under the shackles of modern instrumental rationality and social order,the feverish Holocaust turns into fanatical destruction that subverts traditional ethical values.Sammler discerns the destructive factors in history and the darkness in human nature,but he is not entirely pessimistic and makes exploration for the future of New York City.

Planning and construction of Xiong’an New Area(city of over 5 million people):Contributions of China’s geologists and urban geology

China established Xiong’an New Area in Hebei Province in 2017,which is planned to accommodate about 5 million people,aiming to relieve Beijing City of the functions non-essential to its role as China’s capital and to expedite the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.From 2017 to 2021,the China Geological Survey(CGS)took the lead in multi-factor urban geological surveys involving space,resources,environments,and disasters according to the general requirements of“global vision,international standards,distinctive Chinese features,and future-oriented goals”in Xiong’an New Area,identifying the engineering geologic conditions and geologic environmental challenges of this area.The achievements also include a 3D engineering geological structure model for the whole area,along with“one city proper and five clusters”,insights into the ecology and the background endowment of natural resources like land,geothermal resources,groundwater,and wetland of the area before engineering construction,a comprehensive monitoring network of resources and environments in the area,and the“Transparent Xiong’an”geological information platform that is open,shared,dynamically updated,and three-dimensionally visualized.China’s geologists and urban geology have played a significant role in the urban planning and construction of Xiong’an New Area,providing whole-process geological solutions for urban planning,construction,operation and management.The future urban construction of Xiong’an New Area will necessitate the theoretical and technical support of earth system science(ESS)from various aspects,and the purpose is to enhance the resilience of the new type of city and to provide support for the green,low-carbon,and sustainable development of this area.

Planning for the Solid Waste Management of Central Park in New Capital Development of Afghanistan

Kabul New City is a new capital development and a modern city development of Afghanistan covering total area of 740 km2. In 2009 Afghan cabinet approved developing New Capital to fulfill the requirement of growing population. For sustainable development, it has been planned to have a green belt and central park about 1298 hectares within the city. It is having positive impact on human health along with the economic, social and environmental benefits. Hence, for sustaining the urban parks, their proper maintenance is a foremost problem. The solid waste management is duly considered in planning stage of development, otherwise, it would encounter major challenges during operation and maintenance of Park. The projected waste generation in KNC park area is required to be assessed, therefore, surveys of Bagh-e-Babur in existing Kabul are carried out for the visitors’ projection and solid waste generation. The highest visitors and waste were estimated in declining order of summer, spring, fall, and winter. Kabul New City Central Park results speculate that the total visitors’ projection is going to be 6,745,313 per year generating about 337 metric tons wastes/year (0.05 kg/visitor/day). 10 Vehicles of capacity 8 m3 are required to collect waste from central park towards the Transfer Station while 4 vehicles of 23 m3 are required for collection of waste from TS to Landfill. Moreover, 700 containers of 240 liters are required in the park. Furthermore, different sites were indicated in map for composting area where after the development it would be considered.
